This invention relates to a copy-holder.
An object of the invention is the provision of a copy-holder which may be supported upon a desk of a typist whereby the typist may move the copy progressively-as the work of typing is being completed and the line to be copied will always be in position where it can be readily seen.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a copy-holder which may carry small or large sheets and in a position where visibility will be at its best and where the copy-holder can be readily manipulated for the convenience of the typist.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a copy-holder for carrying copies on ordinary sheets of paper but the copy-holder may be extended readily and conveniently to carry sheets of approximately twice the size, or more, of the ordinary sheet of paper.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a copy-holder for progressively moving printed or typed matter into view and for retaining the matter in a position for convenient inspection by the typist, the device being so constructed that the sheet of printed matter may be 25 progressively moved without any'inconvenience to the operator. 7

This invention Will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, in view of the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification; nevertheless, it'is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the disclosure, being susceptible of such changes and modifications'as define no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, designates a base member of a U-shaped frame It having upstanding legs i! and i3. Secured to the frame or formed integrally therewith is an extension or foo-t l9 projecting forwardly of the'base member 55. A pair of lateral extensions and 2| are secured in any approved manner to the base member 55 and extend forward of the frame It and are provided with rubber feet 22 adapted to rest upon the top of the desk. It will be noted that theextensions 2i? and 2| are offset as shown at 23 for raising said extensions above the desk sothat the feet 22 and the base member. IE will support the U-shaped frame [6. Bars or standards 25 and 26 each'have a slot 21 which receives a thumb screw 23 which is threaded into, an opening 29 in the legs i? and iii of the frame I6. This permits vertical adjustment of the bars 25 and 26' for a purpose which will be presently explained.
A spacer rod-30 is connected at St to the upper ends of the bars 25 and 2tand not only maintains these bars in their respective parallel positions but provides a means for guiding the copy outwardly from the frame when said copy has been moved by rollers 32 and 33.
The pressure roller 32 isprovided with a shaft 34 and the ends of this shaft are rotatably mounted in arms 35, These arms are carried by the upper end of a U-shaped bracket, generally designated by the numeral 36, and consists of a base member or rod3l, side arms 33 and pintles 39 pivotally mounted at 40 in ears M extending laterally or forwardly of the frame It. A coil spring 42 is connected to the ear M at one end while the opposite end is connected to the shaft or base member 31. It will be noted that there are two springs 42, one at each end of the base member or surrounding the pintles 39 and tend always to urge the bracket 36 and likewise the roller 32 outwardly so that said roller will be in contact with the driven roller 33.
Each of the arms 35 is provided at its lower end with a reduced portion 43 adapted to be received within .a passage 44 in the upper end of the arm 38. A thumb screw 45 threaded into an opening in a collar 46 at the upper end of each arm 38 is adapted to engage the reduced portion 43 for securing said reduced portions in predetermined positions as may be desired. In other words, when the pressure roller is raised the thumb screw 28 is released and the bars 25 and 26 are elevated to the proper height. Then the set screws 45 are released so that the arms 35 may be elevated to properly position the pressure roller 32 with respect to the driven roller 33.
The driven roller 33 has a shaft 41 extending entirely through the roller and secured thereto. The ends of the shaft project beyond the ends of the roller. It will be noted that the end 48 (Fig. 4) of said shaft extends beyond the bar or standard 25 and has a bearing at 49 while the opposite end of the shaft 41 has a similar bearing 50 in the bar 26. A shoulder 5| on the roller 33 abuts the inner face of the bar 26.
A manipulating knob is secured in any approved manner to the shaft 41 at its outer end so that rotation of the knob will cause rotation of the shaft 41 and likewise the roller 33.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 5 to 9, inclusive, it will be seen that mechanism is provided whereby the roller 33 may be rotated by the member 55 or by means of a lever 56 pivoted at 51 on a shaft carried by a block 58 mounted on the member I9 at the bottom of the device. A spring 59, through its connection between the lever 56 and the block 58, tends to move one end of the lever in a downward direction towards the member I9. The end of the lever which has the finger-piece 60 will be moved in the opposite direction or upwardly from the desk or support for the frame I6. A lip 6| on the member 2| prevents the typewriter from being placed too close to the lever 56 and aids in retaining the typewriter in place.
A link 62 is pivotally connected at 63 with the inner end of the lever 56 and is provided with an internal passage 64 at its upper end to receive an extensible link 65. A thumb screw 66 carried by an enlargement 6! at the upper end of the link 62 is adapted to secure the link to the link 62 when said links have been adjusted relative to each other. This adjustment is particularly advantageous when the bars 25, 26 and the arms 35 are elevated or adjusted to a higher position for raising simultaneously the driven roller 33 and the pressure roller 32.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 5 to 9, inclusive, it will be seen that a device is employed which will progressively revolve the roller 33 through predetermined arcs and the are through which the roller is revolved will depend upon the semi-circular member ID which is carried by a plate 'II having an opening I2 and the finger pieces I3 and I4. A ratchet wheel I5 has a sleeve I6 received by the shaft 4! and the outer end of the sleeve is provided with projections or keys 11 adapted to be received within diametrically disposed notches 18 in a sleeve I9 secured to the knob'55. The sleeve I6 and likewise the ratchet wheel 15 are loose on the shaft 47 but the sleeve I9 is secured to the shaft 41 by means of a set screw so that when the knob 55 is rotated the ratchet wheel I6 will likewise be rotated. a
A pawl BI is secured at 82 to a lever 83 which is pivotally mounted at 84 on the shaft 41 and the link 65 is pivotally connected at B5 to the lever 83, so that when the link 65 is moved vertically upwardly the lever will be raised and the free end of the pawl 8| will ride over the curved surface of the member I0 until it slips beyond the free edge II3 of the member I6 and engages one of the teeth 15 of the ratchet wheel "5. The free end of the pawl 8| at all times will be in contact with the curved outer surface of the member I0 before it engages a tooth.
The lever 83 is offset as shown at 86 so that it will clear the member I0 and a washer 81 is disposed between the lever 83 and the pawl 8| where said pawl is connected to the lever 83.
As shown more particularly in Fig. 8 the manipulating plate II is offset from the plane of the member I0 and is spaced from the inner face of the ratchet wheel 15 by means of the pivoted end 84 of the lever 83 and a washer 88. The plate TI is located between the washer 88 and a washer 89 on the shaft 41 with the washer 89 in fiat engagement with the bar or extension 26. A coil spring 87 in washer 8'I pulls the pawl 6| downwardly so that when said pawl rides beyond the point Ill it will engage the teetch 15*.
A spring arm 90 is secured at 9i to the bar or extension 26 and extends downwardly therefrom and is provided with a roller 92 adapted to engage between the teeth I5 of the wheel "I5. A second spring member 93 is secured to the spring member 99 and extends laterally at its lower end from the roller 92 and is provided with a detent 94 adapted to engage within notches 95 at the periphery of the operating plate 'II for retaining said plate in a predetermined position.
A second extension driven roller I00, as shown more particularly in Figure 4, has a sleeve I6! secured thereto by a set screw I02 and adapted to receive the projecting end 43 of the shaft 4'! and is secured to said shaft by means of a set screw I02. From the opposite end of the roller projects a shaft I03 which is received within a bearing I64 at the upper end of a bearing plate I05 carried by an extensible arm. or rod I06. The outer end of the shaft I63 is threaded, as shown at'Ifll, to receive the nut I08 and lock nut I06, for retaining the shaft and likewise the roller I09 in position.
The extensible arm I06 is received within a standard IIO having a base plate III. A collar IIZ is carried by the upper end of the standard I I6 and a thumb screw II3 secures the rod I66 in any of its adjusted positions within the standard III).
The bar I05 is also-provided with a bearing II5 to receive the free end of a shaft II6 which carries a second pressure roller II'I. This pressure roller is adapted to be maintained in 00- acting relation with the driven roller I00 at all times. The shaft 34 of the pressure roller 32 is provided with an internally threaded sleeve I i8 into which is threaded, as shown at I I 9, the inner end of the shaft H6, whereby said shaft is connected to the shaft 34 so that the pressure rollers 32 and I I! will be simultaneously revolved.
It will be seen by the above construction that the auxiliary driven roller I00 and the auxiliary pressure roller II I may be readily removed or disconnected from the respective rollers 33 and 32 in an easy manner and the standard IID may also be removed when it is desired to hold copy sheets having a predetermined width. However, when the sheets are too large for the single copy-holder with the two rollers 32 and 33 the rollers II! and I00 are respectively connected to the rollers 32 and 33 readily s0 that when the U-shaped bracket 36 is swung slightly outwardly the rollers 32 and II? will move about the pivot point of the shaft II6 in the bearing l 55 as Well as about pivotrod 31. This bearing, however, has a slightly larger opening than the diameter of the shaft H6 so that the combined rollers 32 and Ill may be swung outwardly with the bearing I I5 acting as a pivot.
If the copy vis sufficiently large or long it is only necessary to release thethumb screws 28, 55, $6, and H3 whence all of the rollers together with the operating mechanism for the driven roller 33 may be elevated to the, height desired, after which the thumb screws are reset.
The bracket 36 has its lower end disposed outwardly from the inner edge of the members I! and l8 so that the copy paper may be placed to its full length to the bottom of the frame Hi.
When the operator desires to move the copy to another line for typing, it is only necessary 7 to press down upon the member 69 for operating the lever 56 whence the rod 65 will be elevated, causing the pawl 8| to ride over the semi-circular member 10 until it slips off the free edge 10* and engages between a pair of the teeth I5 of the ratchet wheel 15 and since said pawl is moving to the right in Figs. 5 and 6 it will partially rotate the ratchet wheel and likewise the roller 33 and the roller I when said lastmentioned roller is attached to the roller 33.
In the position of the semi-circular member ill in Fig. the pawl will rapidly slip off the free edge w of the member If! and engage the teeth for moving the ratchet wheel through a greater are than it will do with the member I0 in the position shown in Fig. 6. In other words, if it" is necessary to move the ratchet Wheel l5 through an angle between the edges of a pair of teeth to bring the next line of printing into view the member H is partially rotated until the free edge lii passes beyond the free end of the pawl TH s'ufficiently toprevent the pawl from engaging the teeth through a predetermined movement of the pawl until it comes to a position where it will move the ratchet wheel through the smallest angle. If a greater angle of movementof the ratchet wheel is desired the plate it is moved in a counter-clockwise direction in Fig. 6 a tooth or so so that the free edge lll will permit the pawl 8| to move the ratchet wheel 15 through an angle between two pairs of teeth. The plate H may be further rotated in the counter-clockwise direction in Fig. 6 so that the ratchet wheel 15 will be moved through a greater angle by permitting the'free end of the pawl to slip off the free end of the member 10 during an earlier period of movement of said pawl.
The shafts 34 and H6 extend entirely through the pressure rollers 32 and Ill, respectively, to maintain an even pressure throughout the length of said rollers. The shafts 41 and 13 extend through the respective rollers 33 stability to said rollers.
I claim:
1. A copy-holder comprising a frame, a driven roller on the frame, means for rotating the driven roller, a shaft having an extension projecting from the roller and beyond the frame, a second roller having removable connections at one end thereof with the extension on the shaft, a standard for supporting the other end of the second roller, pressure rollers associated with the firstmentioned rollers, one of said pressure rollers being supported from the frame and the other pressure roller being supported by the standard and the pressure roller which cooperates with the driven roller.

A copy-holder comprising a frame, a driven roller on the frame, means for rotating the driven roller, a shaft having an extension projecting from the roller and beyond the frame, a second roller having removable connections at one end thereof with the extension on the shaft, a standard for supporting the other end of the second roller, pressure rollers associated with the firstmentioned rollers, one of said pressure rollers being supported from the frame and the other pressure roller being supported by the standard and the pressure roller which cooperates with the driven roller, the pressure rollers having removable connections for simultaneous operation.
3. A copy-holder comprising a frame, a driven roller on the frame, means for rotating the driven roller, a shaft having an extension projecting from the roller and beyond the frame, a second roller having removable connections at one end thereof with the extension on the shaft, a standard for supporting the other end of the second roller, pressure rollers associated with the firstmentioned rollers, one of said pressure rollers being supported from the frame and the other pressure roller being supported by the standard and the pressure roller which cooperates with the driven roller, said standard and frame having extensible portions for raising bodily and simultaneously the driven and pressure rollers.
4. A copy-holder comprising a frame, a driven roller mounted on the upper end of the frame, a Ushaped bracket pivoted to the lower end of said frame, a pressure roller mounted for rotation in the upper end of the bracket, a resilient means for retaining the pressure roller in coacting relation with the driven roller, a second driven roller removably connected at one end to the first driven roller, a standard supporting the other end of the second driven roller, a second pressure roller removably connected at one end with the first pressure roller and removably supported at the other end by the standard.
5. A copy-holder comprising a frame, a driven roller mounted on the upper end of the frame,
a U-shaped bracket pivoted to the lower end of said frame, a pressure roller mounted for rotation in the upper end of the bracket, a resilient means pressing the bracket for retaining the pressure roller in co-acting relation with the driven roller, .a second driven roller removably connected at one end to the first driven roller, a standard supporting the other end of the second driven roller, a second pressure roller removably connected at one end with the first pressure roller and removably supported at the other end by the standard, the combined pressure rollers being resiliently mounted by means of the standard and the spring-pressed bracket.
6. A copy-holder comprising a frame, a standard spaced from the frame, a pair of driven rollers carried by the frame and standard, said rollers being in longitudinal alignment and having their adjacent ends removably connected together, a bracket pivotally connected at its lower end to the lower end of the frame, a pair of pressure rollers having the adjacent ends removably connected together and supported by the standard and bracket, said bracket being spaced outwardly of the frame for substantially the full length of said frame and bracket.
'7. A copy-holder comprising a frame, a standard spaced from the frame, a pair of driven rollers carried by the frame and standard, said rollers being in longitudinal alignment and having their adjacent ends removably connected together, a
bracket pivotally connected at its lower end to the lower end of the frame, a pair of pressure rollers having the adjacent ends removably connected together and supported by the standard and bracket, said bracket being spaced outwardly of the frame for substantially the full length of said frame and bracket, means for mounting one end of a pressure roller on the standard to permit pivotal movement of the combined pressure rollers when the bracket is moved outwardly from the frame.
