Description

Aug. 6, 1940- c. w. EDWARDS COPYHOLDEF.
Filed Marh 4, 1940 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inve ntor Caa Mj/ze Edwards Attorney Patented Aug. 6, i940 UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to copyholders of the type generally employed by typists and the like for holding manuscripts and other work while making typewritten copies thereof and an object 5 of the present invention as to provide a copyholder that is characterized by simplicity of construction, fewness of parts and yet will be found efficient for the purpose designed.
The invention, together with its objects and advantages, will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure l is a front elevational view of the copyholder. v
Figure 2 is a rear elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 f Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure l.
Referring more indetail to the drawings it will be seen that in the preferred embodiment thereof the copyholder comprises a panel 5 of metal or other suitable material having an integral marginal flange (5 and supported in a vertical position through the medium of legs I.
The legs 7 are adjustably connected to the panel so that the panel may be raised or lowered to the desired elevation, and in this connection it will be noted that the legs I are equipped with threaded shanks 8 that extend through openings provided therefor in the bottom section of the flange 6 and are equipped with pairs of lock nuts 9 to be threaded home against said lower section of the flange 5 in securing the legs to thepanel and the panel at the desired position of adjustment.
Also, the legs I have resilient surface-contacting elements It associated therewith so that in using the device the desk, table, or the like will not be scarred as a result of such use.
Rotatably supported between the vertical sections of the flange 6 at the rear or hollow side of the panel, and adjacent the upper edge of the panel is a shaft I I on which is mounted, for rotation therewith, a paper feed roll I2 having a periphery of rubber or other material that will have good frictional contact with the paper, or manuscript for feeding the latter vertically of the panel 6.
gated transversely of the panel adjacent the up- 55 For yieldablyholding such paper ormanuscript The roller I2 is disposed opposite a slot I3 elonagainst the periphery of the feed roll l2, there is pivotally mounted on the panel 5 to extend across the front side of the panel a bail I4.
The bail I4 has the legs thereof terminating in pintles I5 journaled in suitable openings pro- 5 vided therefor in the vertical sections of the flange 6, and engaged with the pintles I5 are coil springs Ifithat are anchored at the rear side of the panel and to thevertical sections of the flange 6 as at IT.
Mounted on the bight of the bail I4 for rotation relative thereto, if desired, or held thereon stationary relative to the bail, are contact rolls I8 that serve to maintain the paper or manuscript in proper contact with the periphery of the feed r'oll l2. In this connection it will be appreciated that the springs I5 bias the bail I4 in a. manner to engage the rolls l8 with the paper or manuscript and maintain such paper or manuscript in contact with the peripheries of the rolls I8 and the feed roller I2.
For operating the feed roller I2 there is provided an operating shaft I9,one end of which is r'otatably supported at a lower corner of the panel 5 and the opposite end of which is journaled in the vertical section 2!! of a bracket 2| that extends forwardly from the panel 5 and at one end is secured to the panel as at 22, and as best shown in Figures 1 and 3.
At the lower end thereof the vertical section of the bracket ZI is equipped with a surface contact element 23 of rubber or other suitable material.
On the outer end thereof the shaft I9 is equipped with a handle I9, while at the other end thereof the shaft 59 is in driving engagement with the shaft I I of roller I2 through the medium of a' chain and sprocket drive connection 24 disposed at the rear side of the panel 5' and within the confines of the flange 6 and as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3.
To maintain the runs of the chain of the drive connection 24 out of contact with the panel 5, there is provided on the rear side of the panel 5 at a point where the runs of the chain cross, a sound-absorbing element 25 as shown in FigureZ.
From the above it will be apparent that with the paper or manuscript disposed between the roller I2 and rolls I8 the operator by turning the knob 19' will cause the roller I2 to rotate for feeding the paper.
To assist the typist or copyis; in following the workto be copied, line by line, there is provided an index or line finder 26. The same is in the nature of arod disposed transversely of the panel 5:atfthe front side of the panel and terminating at its opposite end in pintles 21 suitably journaled in the vertical sections of the flange 6 and threaded to accommodate pairs of lock nuts 28 through the medium of which the line finder or index rod 26 is secured against free vertical swinging movement, while at the same time the said line finder or index rod 26 may be adjusted relative to the front face of the panel 5 as required by the thicknes of the paper or manuscript to be copied.
Obviously in using the device, the paper or manuscript bearing the data to be copied is disposed vertically at the front side of the panel 5 with a portion thereof placed between the periphcries of the roller l2 and rolls l8, and the index or line finder rod 26 disposed transversely of the copy work.
The copyholder will be disposed at a position convenient to the typist, and when disposed at the back of the typewriter in front of the typist the rod l9 will extend forwardly and preferably is of such a length as to have the knob I 9' thereof disposed convenient to the keyboard of the typewriter to be readily grasped by the hand of the typist for rotating the rod H? to cause, in a manner hereinbefore described in detail, a shifting of the paper vertically relative to the panel 5 of the copyholder and in an up or down direction as desired in the course ofmaking a copy or copies of the work.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility, manner of use, and advantages of a copyholder embodying the features of the present invention will be had without a more detailed description.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
