MEANS FOR CGMBINING AUTOQRAPHIC REGISTERS AND TYPE-WRITERS.
Specication of Letters latent.V Iatnfed Slept. 20, `191()- Applcatiokx. niet! February 1.3, 1909. Serial No. 477,624. Y' Y l To all furi om. it rma 1/ concern: i
Be it known that Liberalen J. 13. anni?, a citizen of thc. United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ot llliiiois, have invented certain new and ingAu tograpliicllegisters and 'lype-ll'riters, of which the following is a clear, fall,` and exact description. A
My invention relates to inea-iis whereby autographic registers and typewriters may be combined with each other in such relative positions that the writingr of the latter may be conveniently received upon the Writing bed of the former and thus em-ploy the lconibined machine for use in billing, invoicing and the like. i
It is the object of my invention to provide convenient means that may he readily attached to an ordinar v desk or table hereby the two machines may be used in combination willi cach other, without altering the construction or operation of either machine. Y It is'also an objectot' my invent-ion to do this iii such a manner that the devices may be combined in such a simple and'easy maiiner that even an inexgjicricnced person can ptit the saine together properly withoutniuch trouble. f i
Another object ot'inv invention is lo provide means whereby the niaiiifolding ina terial used between the record strips of the register, may be conveniently adjusted in the register without the necessity of having to reiiiove. either the register or the typowriter.
All of these objects I accomplish by the` incans fully described in the following Specification and as more particularly set forth in thc claims. i
VIn the drawingsz--Figuie l is a vertical front elevation of a desk showin;r my invention applied thereto for the purpose of using a writingjIr machine of'the book-typewriter type to write upon an autographio register. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section thereof, taken on line 2-2 ot' Fig. 1 and looking in the direction ol' the arrows. Fig. 3 is a topl plan vicw showii'g the typewriter mounted thereon in dotted lines. Fig. l is a vertical side elevation of a fragmentary portion of the autographic register showing the iinproved nianner of mounting the paper rolls and the means for operating the cutting' edge thereof. Fig. 5 is a fragmentar detail,
drawn .in perspective, of the devicesein ployed for elevating the autographic register for the purpose of manipulating or removing the inanilolding material. Fig. 6 is a view, `similar to Fig. 2 showing the typewriter moved to the i'earniostf portion of its useful Improvements in Means toi' (loinbintracks and the register clevated'at its front edge, forvtlie purpose of removing the inani- 'oidiiigniaterial. Fig. T an enlarged detail view, of one o' the journaling hubs of the 'i 1 UNITED STATES PATENT Omron. 1 y f autographic register.- Fig. S is an enlarged detail view of one of the register adjusting bolts.
below this typewiitingr machine, preferably' with its platen or writing;t surface substan tiall v in the plane of theitop ofthe desk is an autographic register 5 of the manifolding typc. ln order to mount this register in propcr position relative to .thctylxwritcr it is necessary that the platen ofsaid register should bc always parallel to :ind in the writing' plane ot' the typewritin;r machine. l accomplish this h v mounting; suitable brackets or hangersl upon the desk and provide means thereon for adjusting: the registcr toward or away from the typewriting machine. The means l'or mounting the autograpliic register preferably comprise two or more substantially U-shaped hangers or straps 6, (l. that have the upper endA of their vertical parallel members bent laterally to themselves and are. secured to thc underside i of the top of the desk in any suitable inaniier. 'lhesc brackets are disposed ont` ucar the front of the dcsk and the other toward 'the rear thereof and a're spaced so that thc 'forward and rear edges respectivclv of thc autographic register 5 will rest upon and be supported thereby. At or near each end ot' thc horizontal portion of these bracketsL -the saine are provided with .suitable handoperated bolts or thmnh-screws,- 7, 'l'. that.y
are preferably tapped transversely through the brackets and are-provided with lock nuts S on the portions of their shanks extending above the brackets. The upper ends of these. thumb-screws are preferably reduced in di- ""slot on the inner edge of a cutting plate 13.
ameter and turned smooth 'so asto provide suitable extensions 9 that. project up into suitable counter sunk recessesr that are kvformed at or near tbe-corners of the base plate of the' autographic register. By turning these thumb-screws the relative position of the writing platen of the register is adjusted toward or away from the typewriter so as to surface. f n
Then two or more copies of invoices, hills, or the like, are desired the additionaifcopies are usually made by means of maniiolding,r material` passed between the record strips give the latter a proper writing of the register. Thisnianifolding material is preferably journaled on suitable bearing studs 11 and l2- (the latter mounted on a lexible plate) on the side of the register,
and said material extends across the platen of the register where -it passes through a lVhen it is desired to remove th-is manifolding material the same is drawn transversely across the register and then the usedportion may be torn olf alonfr the cutting edge 13. In order to accomplish ,this in the combined register and typewriter device'above described it would ordinarily be necessary vto remove the typewriting machine from itsv tracks and then either remove theregister from its brackets or elevate the forward edge of the register sufficiently to permitthe operator to insert his hand between the edge of the register and the desk, in order to pull out the'I manifol'ding material. I overcome this objection by suitable mechanism that I have devised for this particular purpose and which is shown in detail in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings. In this construction, a reciprocal plunger 14 is loosely mounted in the, forward bracket, 'and has its upper end,` that, extends above said bracket, provided with a pivoted disk 15 that is kept normally in Contact with the underside of the forward edge of the register by a coil` spring. This plunger extends down below the bracket where its lower end engages the outer end ot' a lever 1G of the third-class whose IDbosite en'd is mounted on :i rock haft 1T. (')nc of the ends of this rock shaft is mounted in a bearing plate 18 secured to `the desk while its opposite end is journaled in bearings in a hanger 19 depending from the forward bracket 6. This shaft is rocked l,\' a suitable foot-treadle 20 secured to the lower portion ot the deskand connected by draw the manifolding material from they side of the register after having first moved thetypewriting machine to the rear of its tracks.
In order to remove the record strips, and also toprevent the same from slipping, the forward end of said/register is rovided with a cutting edge Q3, that extends across tliesame and has its ends mounted in the upper ends of suitable L-shaped arms Qlthat are pivoted to the side-frames of the register.. A suitable handle 25 projectsforward from the register and is so arranged that by liftingrthe handle the cutting edge is raisedfroin the record paper and the saine may be grasped by the oper..tor and withdrawn from the register. ln order to .keep the cutting edge normally in contact;
with the platen of the registi-rattle pivotal pinA of they L-shapcd arms is preferably seeuredto thc rock-sha ft )t that extends between the side-frames 'of the register and a Vcoiled spring 27 interposed between said side-frames surrounds said shaft land keeps the cutting edge in its normal position pressing down against the forward edge of the platen of the register. rlhe journaling hubs furthe paper rolls are preferably made to revolve with said paper rolls so as to permit the strips to be extracted without.
unnecessary friction.r `This is done by securfing aheaded bolt QS transversely in the free ends of the spring plate 2) and thenv swiveling a disk-shaped journaling boss 30 on the inner extended end thereof on which the roll of paperl is mounted.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the specific means shown and described for supporting and znljusting the register forit is quite obvious that insead of the U-sbaped straps, a. straight bar having laterally bent.- ends A, A, as suggested iii-dotted lines in Fig-lof the drawings mightY lie-employed, the ends being secured to the sides of the deck. 0r, if found convenient. a suitable table or stand of the proper height to bring the platen of the register in the writing plane of the typewriter might be used. Also l do noedesire to be limited to the particular means for elevating the register to remove or adjust. the.
manifolding material aS it is possible to' raise the entire register in a lane parallel to its normal plane and then manipulate the v inanifolduig materia-l;
All such modifications it. will be understood are included within the scope of my invention.
