SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,058, dated May 28, 1889.

Be it known that l, HARRY L. SNOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reeseville, in the county of Dodge and State of Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification,
My invention relates to an improvement in printing-presses; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a printing-press embodying my improvements, showing the same in position, with the tympan folded down over the form and the impression-roller in the act of passing over the tympan. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the impression-roller at one end of its stroke or longitudinal movement and showing the tympan raised. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of my improved printing-press. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is aV detail horizontal sectional View taken on the line a: a: of Fig. 4.
A represents the bed of the press, which is of suitable length, width, and thickness, and is supported at suitable elevation by means of legs B, which depend from the corn ers thereof. On the upper side of the bed, at the ends thereof, are transverse bars C, which form anges to secure the chase (not shown) on the bed. On opposite sides of the bed are secured two pairs of longitudinal guide-bars, D, which have grooves E formed in their opposing sides. From one of the upper guidebars D extends a vertical longitudinal ange or bar, E, which rises above the face of the bed to a suitable height and forms one side of the bed, the said flange-bar having teeth or spurs F on its upper edge. The length of the said ange-bar is equal to the length of the guide-bars D, and projects beyond the ends of the bed with the said guidebars.
G represents a pair of slide-rods, which are provided on their upper and lower sides with flanges which it in the grooves E', and are thereby adapted to slide back and forth between the bars D. ters of the same, are the lower ends of a pair of vertical standards, l, which have vertical slots K of suitable length in their upper ends. On the front and rear sides of the said slots are formed guiding-tongues L, which engage corresponding grooves that are formed in opposite edges of a pair of bearing-blocks, M.
N represents an impression roller or cylinder, which is arranged transversely between the standards I, and has spindles at its ends, which are journaled in the blocks M. At one lend of the said cylinder or impression-roller is a spur-wheel, O, the teeth of which engage the rack-teeth F on one side of the bed.
P represents a pair of adj listing-screws, which are arranged in the lower portions of the slots K and have their upper ends bearing against the lower sides of the blocks M. The said adjusting-screws are provided with adj usting-nuts R, by means of which the blocks M may be lowered, thereby adapting the impression-roller to be vertically adj usted, as will be readily understood.
Coiled extensile springs S bear upon the upper side of the blocks M, and are engaged at their upper ends by set-screws T, which work in threaded openings in the upper ends of the standards. By means of these setscrews and springs thepressure exerted by the impression-roller on the form may be regulated, as will be hereinafter set forth.
U represents a transverse shaft, which is journaled in suitable bearings, V, under the center of the bed. The said shaft has a crank, WV, at one end, by means of which it may be rotated, and rigidly attached to the said shaft is a pair of spur-wheels, X, the upper sides of which extend through openings in the centers of the lower guide-bars D and engage the rack-teeth H on the lower sides of the slidebars G.
From the foregoing description it will beA understood that by rotating the shaft U the guide-bars carrying the standards I may be moved longitudinally in either direction, so as to cause the impression-roller to pass over the bed from end to endthereof, and that, inasmuch as the said impression-roller is geared to the rack F by the wheel O, the impressionroller will be caused t-o rotate as it moves over the bed.

The operation of my invention is as follows: The form is arranged on the bed in the usual manner and inked by a hand-roller. The sheet of paper to be printed is secured in the correct position on the inner side of the tympan and the latter is turned downward on the form, so as to cause the paper to bear upon the faces of the type, and the operator then turns the crank-shaft, so as to cause the slidebars to move the standards I, and consequently cause the impression cylinder or roller to pass over the tympan, and thereby impress the sheet of paper upon the face of the form l and 'print the same. When the roller has passed beyond the opposite end of the form, the tympan is raised, a new sheet fed thereto, the printed sheet being previously removed therefrom, and the form is re-inked. The tympan is then turned downward thereon, and the roller is then passed over the form in the opposite direction from that previously described.
A .printing-press thus constructed is eX- ceedingly compact, is strong and durable, may be manufactured at a small oost, and is capable of doing very superior work, and may be easily and rapidly operated.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. 2. The combination of the bed or frame having the longitudinal guide-bars provided with'grooves in their adjacent faces, the slidebars guided between said guide-bars and having flanges fitting in the grooves thereof, the lower-flanges being provided with teeth or racks, a shaft j ournaled transversely under 4the bed or frame, and pinions upon said shaft extending through slots or openings in the guide-bars and meshing with the racks upon the slide-bars, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the bed or frame having the longitudinal rack-bar F on its upper side, the guide-bars D D, arranged in pairs at each side of the frame, and standards Z at one end of the latter, the tympanframe pivoted to said standards and having rearward-projecting arms, the rack-bars sliding longitudinally between the guide-bars, the standards secured to said sliding rackbars and having vertical slots, the impressioncylinder journaled in boxes vertically adjustable in said slots, springs forcing the said cylinder in a downward direction, a shaft journaled transversely under the bed or frame and having an operating-crank, pinions upon said shaft meshing with the longitudinallysliding rack-bars, and a gear-wheel upon the cylinder-shaft meshing with the longitudinal rack-bar uponthe upper side of the bed or frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. l
4. The printing-press comprising the bed having the rack-bar F and guide-bars D on its sides and the standards Y at one end, the slide-bars arranged in the guide-bars and having the racks H, the standards I, secured to the slide-bars, the impression-cylinder journaled in the standards I and having the spurwheel engaging 'the rack, the tympan-frame pivoted at one end to the standards Y, and the operating-shafts having the wheels X, engaging racks on the slide-bars, substantially as set forth.
