The present invention relates to duplicating apparatus, and -more particularly to a new method of working and a special form of emb'odiment of] a machine for re-printing bookkeeping entries or the like, comprising one or more lines to be copied from an original sheet or printing plate furnished with reverse characters, signs on to sheets, cards etc., which have previously been covered with a very thin film of a volatile solvent, as spirit or the like.
In the hitherto known manifolding machines for line by line or sectional re-printing only a copying step-by-step of the single lines from an original, which was attached to a printing drum with the lines of matter arranged vertically to the drum axis, was performed in such a way, that after the re-p rinting of one line of the original sheet had taken place the next line had to be copied. The most important feature of the present invention is the method of re-printing single lines step by step or in any desired succession. This is necessary for printing material lists, salary bags or the like. A further object of the invention is 5 the device permitting to re-print any desired line at will of an originalor printing plate attached to the printing drum with the lines of matter arranged vertically to the drum axis.
This device consists of an arrangement of an- 0 tomatically or manually driven elements for lateral displacement of a special member, carrying a counterpressure roller, 9. moistening device, both of line width and a feeding. table. This member is moved sideways on an axis parallel to the axis of the printing drum step by step or at will in any desired succession of. lines.
Further features of the invention may be seen from the drawings which show. diagrammatically one embodiment of the invention and in which the same reference characters have been used in all the views toindicate corresponding parts. Fig. 1 is a side view Fig. 2 is a front elevation Fig. 3 is a detail of the device according to the invention.

pivoting in 64, the second pawl 65, to which in 66 the connecting rod 80 is attached, the other end of said connectingrod 60 being joined to lever 58. The position of the two pawls 62 and is provided in such a manner, that they are capable 35 of engaging the teeth of rack 50. The way of these pawls 62 and 65 is determined and limited by springs 16 and 11. The free arms of the bell crank levers 51 and 58 are in touch with the arms of the key-levers 61 and 68 pivoting around 40 the axis 69.
For automaticlateral displacement of the sliding member 6 a cam 10 attached at the front side of the printing drum I strikes against one arm of a bell crank lever 1| pivoting around 12,,to 45 which a'connecting rod 13 is joined, the other end of which is connected to lever 51. A lever 15 pivoting around '14 enables the setting out of work of the aforesaid device.
The way of operation of the contrivance is 50 the following: If the key lever 68 is pulled downwards the bell crank lever 51 ispivoted in an anticlockwise direction and pushes the connecting rod 59 to the right thus engaging pawl 62 with rack 50. In the meantime the pawl 65 is 55 disengagedv by this movement from rack 50 and the sliding member 8, attached to said rack, and all the parts attached to it, as counterpressure roller, reservoir for the solvent, the moistener with the protruding felt, and the feeding table travel one step of the width of a line to the left by means of the coil spring in the box 5!. If several lines are to be left out the key lever 61 is pulled downwards. By its action the bell crank lever 58 is pivoted in an anticlockwise direction, the connecting rod is pushed to the left and the pawl 65 is disengaged from rack 50 whilst pawl 62 remains out of contact with said rack 50. Now the sliding member 6 travels by tension of the coil spring in box 5| to .theleft until key lever 61 is. given free, whereupon the pawl 85 engages again with rack 50.
The device can be actuated manually, electrically or pneumatically. The position of the single elements of said device may be adapted to any desired requirements.
' What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a duplicating machine printing onto clear sheets previously moistened with a readily volatilizing solvent, the combination comprising a rotatable printing roller bearing a copyable mirror-script original constituted of a plurality of lines arranged in the direction of rotation of said roller, a sliding member adapted to be displacedin a direction parallel to the axis of said printing roller, a moistening means, a counterpressure roller and a feeding table associated with said sliding member and adapted to co-operate with said printing roller to selectively copy a portion of said original onto a copy sheet in accordance with the position of said sliding member, a powered. rack connected to said sliding member, means for engaging said rack to prevent displacements thereof, and means for moving said engaging means into an inoperative position to disengage said rack and to permit said sliding member to be displaced into a position corresponding to the length of time during which said rack is disengaged.
2. In a duplicating machine printing onto clear sheets previously moistened with a readily volatilizing solvent, the combination comprising a rotatable printing roller bearing a copyable mir- ,ror-script original constituted of a plurality of linesarranged in the direction of rotation of said roller, a slidingmember adapted to be displaced in a direction parallel to the axis of said printing roller, a moistening means, a counterpressure roller and a feeding table associated with said sliding member and adapted to co-operate with said printing roller to selectively copy aportion of said original onto a copy sheet in accordance with the position of said sliding member, a spring-powered rack connected to said sliding member and extending in the direction of movement thereof, a pair of pawls adapted to alternately engage the teeth of said rack to retain said sliding member, and means for selectively disengaging said pawls for causing displacements of said sliding member by any desired amount.
3. In a duplicating machine printing onto clear sheets previously moistened with a readily volatilizing' solvent, the combination comprising a rotatable printing roller bearing a copyable mirror-script original constituted of a plurality of lines arranged in the direction of rotation of said roller, a sliding member adapted to be displaced in a direction parallel to the axis of said. printing roller, a moistening means, a counterpressure .said printing roller to selectively copy a portion of said original onto a copy sheet in accordance with the position of said sliding member, a spring-powered rack connected to said sliding member and extending in the direction of movement thereof, a pair of pawls adapted to be actuated to alternately engage and disengage a tooth of said rack, means for alternately actuating said pawls to cause step by step displacement of said sliding member, and means for simultaneously disengaging both of said pawls to cause continuous displacement of said sliding member.
4. In a duplicating machine printing onto clear sheets previously moistened with a readily volatilizing solvent, the combination comprising a rotatable printing roller bearing a copyable mirrorscript original constituted of a plurality of lines arranged in the direction of rotation of said roller, a sliding member adapted to be displaced in a direction parallel to the axis of said printing roller, a moistening means and. a counterpressure roller of single line width and a feeding table adjustably mounted on said sliding member and adapted to co-operate with said printing roller to selectively copy one line of said original onto a copy sheet in accordance with the position of said sliding member, a powered rack connected to said sliding member and extending in the direction of movement thereof, a pivoted pawl engaging a tooth of said rack, a second pawl pivotally mounted on said first pawl and adapted to engageanother tooth of said rack, and means for selectively disengaging said pawls to cause step by step and continuous displacement 01' said sliding member.
5. In a duplicating machine having a printing roller bearing a copyable mirror-script original, the improvement comprising a displaceable member adapted tobe moved in-a direction parallel to the axis of said printing roller, feeding, counterpressure and moistening means associated with said member and adapted to co-operate with said roller to print a portion of said original onto a copy sheet according to the position of said displaceable member, means for moving said displaceable member, means for locking said displaceable member against the effect of said moving means, and means for making said locking means inoperative for a limited time to cause displacement of said member by said moving means.

In a duplicating machine printing onto clear sheets previously moistened with a readily volatilizing solvent, the combination comprising a rosheet bearing lines in copyable mirror-script arranged in the direction of rotation ofsaid roller, pressure means for pressing a portion of aclear sheet against said master sheet, means for moistening said clear sheets, said pressure and moistening means being adapted to be displaced in a direction parallel to the axis of said printing roller, means for displacing said pressure and moistening means, means forlocking said pressure and moistening means against the effect of said displacing means, automatic releasing means including a cam on said printing roller and a lever system for making said locking means inoperative for a limited time during each rotation of said printing roller, means for displacing said pres- .sure and moistening means, means for locking said pressure and moistening means against the I ing means including a cam on said printing roller and a lever system for making said locking means inoperative for a limited time during each rotation of said printing roller, manually operable releasing means including a lever system for making said locking means inoperative, and means for selectively actuating said' automatic and said manually operable releasing means for causing displacement of said pressure and mois tening means.
7. In a duplicating machine printing onto clear sheets previously moistened with a readily volatilizing solvent, the combination comprising a rotatable printing roller adapted to hold a master sheet bearing lines in copyable mirror-script arranged in the direction of rotation of said roller,
a feeding table for feeding clear sheets to said printing roller, pressure means for pressing a portion 01. a clear sheet'against said master sheet, means for moistening said clear sheets, said pressure and said moistening means being adapted to be displaced in a direction parallel to the axis of said printing roller, means for displacing said pressure and moistening means, means for locking said pressure and moistening means against the effect of said displacing means, automatic rea leasing means for making said locking means inoperative for a limited time during each rotation of said printing roller, manually operable releasing means for making said locking means inoperative, and means for selectively actuating said automatic and said manually operable releasing means for causing displacement of said pressure and moistening means.
8. In a duplicating machine printing onto clear sheets previously moistened with a readily volatilizing solvent, the combination comprising a rotatable printing roller adapted to hold a master sheet bearing lines in copyable mirror-script arranged in the direction of rotation of said roller, a feeding table for feeding clear sheets to said printing roller, pressure means for pressing a portion or said clear sheet against said master ment of said sliding member.

In a duplicating machine printing onto clear sheets previously moistened with a readily volatilizing solvent, the combination comprising a rotatable printing roller adapted to hold a master sheet bearing lines in copyable mirror-script arranged in the direction of rotation of said roller, a sliding member adapted to be displaced in a direction parallel to the axis of said printing roller, moistening means and counterpressure means associated with said sliding member for moistening a portion of a clear sheet and to press said portion against the printing roller, a feeding table for introducing clear sheets between said printing roller and said counterpressure means, means for displacing said sliding member, means for locking said sliding member against the efiect of said displacing means, automatic releasing means operated by said printing roller for making said locking means inoperative for a limited time during each rotation of said printing roller, manually operable releasing means for making said locking means inoperative, and means for selectively actuating said automatic and said manually operable releasing means for causing line by line and step by step displace- RI'IZERFELD.
