DUPLIGATING MEANS AND METHOD Filed NOV. 23, 1931 AZZMf//E Patented De@ 139 1932 LOUIS J. SAVER, OF OAK PARK,
LLINES, ASSXGNUR T@ @SABLES H. JUST, SR., OF GHth@y llLLINS DUPLCATING MEANS AND METHGB Application lei'l November 23, 1931. Serial Non 5?6,738.
ll/ly invention relates to duplicating means and method with particular reference to means and method whereby more than the usual number of copies may be made on a duplicating machine from a single original such as a typewritten sheet.
My invention is applicable for use with that class of machines commonly known as hectographs or duplicating machines usually w having va laty printing bed over which is stretched a long and comparatively thin gelatinized band or apron, the ends of the band being secured to or wound on spools adjacent the ends of the printing bed so that by rotating the spools., successive sections of the band 1giady be exposed in operative position on the lln this type of machine a platen carriage having a suitable platen roller thereon is 2'@ adapted to travel over the printing bed for the purpose of impressing the original or the copy sheets on the gelatinized band which latter receives the imprint from the original sheet and transfers it to the copy sheets.
My invention is particularly adapted for use with duplicating machines of a type Similar to that shown in my co-pending applica` tion, Serial No. 349,876, liled March 25. 1929, and my co-nending application Serial No. 3a 529.629. filed April 13. 1931.
The invention may be used in connection with substantially any of the common types of duplicators in which the paper applying means and the bed are relatively movable and is particularly adapted for those having a movable carri age. The usual method of operating a duplicatingr machine similar to those mentioned is to provide an original typewritten sheet which is prepared in the usual manao ner by means of a special duplicator ribbon.
This original sheet is placed in the carriage and the carriage is moved over the printing bed thereby applying the original sheet face downward on the gelatin surface of the printing bed. This original sheet is then removed from the printing bed and blank sheets are inserted in the carriage one at a time and impressed on the gelatin-surface thereby transferring the typewritten matter from the gelao tin surface to the copy sheet. H This usual method provides only a limited number of copies from each original sheet and my in vention is therefore intended to provide a means and method whereby a substantially increased number of copies may he made Jfrom a single original typewritten sheet.
ln my invention ll provide an original type written sheet in the usual manner so far as the face side of the sheet is concerned. ln the preparation of this original5 however special duplicator carbon paper is used whereby a carbon copy in reverse is printed on the back of the original. This original sheet is then used in the duplicator in the usual manner, i. e., by transferring the typewritten matter to the gelatin surface of the printing bed by applying the original thereto face down, then removing the original and malring the usual limited number of copies from the gelatin surface. This same original type- N written sheet is then placed in the carriage face down and applied to the gelatinized surface thereby leaving the reversed carbon copy exposed on the back of the original. This original sheet is then left on the gelatine to form a printing surface and copy sheets are inserted in the machine and the bottom surface of each copy sheet is automatically moistened as it is applied to the back of the origin nal as the .carriage is moved over the printing bed. Each copy sheet thereby receives an impression from the carbon side of the original and a 4further limited number of copies may be made in that manner.
It is therefore obvious that by means of my invention both sides of the original copy may be prepared during a single typewriting operation 'and that a considerably increased 'number of duplicate copies may be obtained therefrom.
It should be noted that the first set oi. copies is obtained from the impression which is transferred to the gelatine 'sheet from the face of the original. The second set of copies is obtained from the carbon impression on the back of the original which latter is used as a printing surface.
One of the important features of my invention is the provision of means whereby the face of the copy sheets may he automatically ttt .it
moistened during the operation ol applying them to the printing surlface. ll also provide an adjustable means tor accurately adjust ing the moistener to a position whereby the desired amount ot moisture may be applied to the sheets.
it :turther object is to provide an ellticient means whereby the moistener may be accurately adjusted in such a manner that the copy sheets may be inserted in the carriage in the usual manner and that the platen roller in its normal movements will bring the copy sheet effectively into Contact with the moistener as the sheet is being applied to the printing surface.. j
Another obj ect is to provide an adjustable moistener preferably resiliently mounted whereby a yielding pressure may be applied either to thesurtace ol the copy sheets or to the surl'ace oit the printing bed as desired or whereby the moistener may be so adjusted as to allow the duplicator to be used in the usual manner without the application oit moisture. i
tfurther obj ects will be apparent trom the specilication and the appended claims.
lln the drawing:
lltigure l is a transverse sectional view through a carriage and a portion ol the printing1 bed ol a duplicator somewhat similar to that shown in the co-pending application, Serial No. litllh, previously mentioned, and illustrates one embodiment ot my invention in cooperative relation with the platen roller; and
litig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of one end ot the moistening reservoir and moisture applying means supported thereon.. llhc opposite end ot the reservoir and the adjusting mechanism ltor the moisture applying means is eractly similar to that shown and it is believed that the construction will be understood without 'turther illustration Reiterring to the drawing in detail, the embodiment illustrated comprises printing bed l9 having the usual printing surlace thereon which sur'lace is provided by means ot the usual gelatinised apron E2. lli carriage 3 comprises the usual rectangular 'trame worlr Yand is provided with a platen roller Ll* rotatably mounted on arms 5 which latter' are se cured to a roch shalt 6 pivotally mounted in the carriage trame. ylhe roch shalt is pro vided with a handle l by which the carriage may be moved bach and torth over the printing bed. rl1 he platen roller and the associated handle are mounted in a manner to provide a lost motion movement oit the handle and roller relative to the carriage whereby the handle and roller may be moved to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l, the platen roller thereby being raised and lowered during each cycle ot operation.
A. pressure roller tl is mounted in the carriage trame in a position to cooperate with :aannam the platen roller in directing sheets ot paper onto the printing surtace. 'llhis pressure roller 8 is usually resiliently mounted in a. manner similar to `that shown in the co-pend ing applications previously mentioned.
any oit the usual types ot margin bars may be employed but in the present instance have diagrammatically illustrated a rotatable margin bar 9 which cooperates with the platen roller tor the control ot the paper as it is being applied to the printing bed. The construction and operation ot this margin bar is illustrated and described in the previ ously mentioned co-pending applicatioin tierial lilo. 529,629.,
fin angularly positioned table l0 is mount ed on the carriage in a position-to direct the original or copy sheets ll between the pressure roller and the platen roller when the platen roller is raised at which time -"the margin bar is in a position to receive and support the edge ot' the paper. l`he carriage is provided with an inwardly eutending shell l2 on which may be supported a reservoir ld to receive a suitable moistening tluid, the res-- ervoir being provided with a 4cover ld.
Threaded rods lli are secured to the reservoir and entend through clearance holes in the rear wall oit the carriage trame. @om pression springs l@ are mounted on these rods between the reservoir and the carriage wall and tend to move the reservoir toward the platen roller, 'llhe threaded rods l5 are provided with 'thumb nuts ll whereby the position ol the reservoir may be accurately adjusted in any desired relation to the platen roller.. lhoclr nuts may be provided tor these thumb nuts iii desired. vice comprises a wich' l@ projecting through the outwardly eatending portion l9 ot the reservoir7 the outer end oli the wich: being in contact with a moisture applying roller 2U.
rl-he"roller 20 resiliently mounted asA shown in llig. d similar mounting means' is provided at each end oit7 the reservoir wheren by the roller 20 is resiliently mounted and comprises levers 2l on which the roller is pivotally montated7 the levers also being pivotally mounted at 22 on the side el the reservoir. rThe outer end ot these levers comprise comparatively thin ldat springs 23 which are secured to the levers fall, The outer end ot each spring is in contact with an adjusting screw 2l which is threaded in a bracket 25 on 'theend ot the reservoir. 'll`he llat springs Q3 are held in contact with the adjusting screw 2l" by means oit a relatively strong tension spring 26. l
llt will be obvious trom an inspection olf the drawing that the reservoir and the associated moistening means may be so adjusted that' when the platen roller is raised the paper may The moisteningl detitl alla
be inserted between the platen roller and the pressure roller and supported in the usual manner on the margin bar and that when the assente platen roller is lowered to the full line position shown in Fig. 1 the paper 11 will be moved to the position shown so that its lower surface will be in contact with 'the resiliently mounted moistening roller 20. This roller is adjustable by means of the screw 24 to provide the desired yielding pressure against the Paper- By means of the construction herein described the reservoir and moisteningmeans may be moved outof operating position so that the duplicator may be used in the usual manner for obtaining the entire limited uumber of copies from the face of the typewrittenor otherwise prepared original.
When it is desired to moisten the surface of the paper in order to obtain copies from the back or reversed carbon side of the original typewritten sheet 11a which has been applied to the printing bed the moistener may be moved forward to contact with the sheets whereby each consecutive copy sheet will be moistened as it is applied tothe printing surface of the sheet 11a. By this method a second supply of copies may be obtained from the carbon side of the original sheet.
llt is sometimes desirable to moisten the gelatinized surface of the printing bed during the back and forth movement of the carriage in Lthe normal operation of the machine. When this is desired the moisture roller adjusting screw 24 may be adjusted to allow the roller 20 to be moved downwardly into yielding Contact with the gelatinized surface of the apron 2 as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, in which position it will be yieldably retained by. means of the tension spring 26 and the flat spring-Q3 and during each back and forth movement of the car riage the gelatinized surface will be moistened to a desired degree depending upon the adjustment of the moistening roller.
llt will, of course, be understood that a special moistening fluid which is adapted for use with the particular duplicating material used may be supplied in the tank 13 for the purpose of moistening the backs of the copy sheets or the printing surface.
In order that the copy sheets may be held accurately in registered position as they are being applied to the reverse side of the original sheet 11B` which latter has previously been applied to the surface of the printing bed, the carriage stops may be moved slightly so that a small portion of the margin of the copy sheet l1 will be applied to and stick to the gelatinized surface adjacent the edge of thev sheet 11a., as shown at 27. This overhanging edge of the copy sheet on the gelatine retains the paper accurately in alignment during the printing process.
When it is desired lto make a largernumber of copies of original typewrittenl or otherwise prepared copy than can be produced from the face and back of the original sheet, further originals may be prepared by placing another carbon sheet back to back with the original carbon sheet during the preparation of the originalcopy. A second sheet is placed against the second carbon paper and the copy is prepared in the same manner as originally described thereby producing an original copy having the typewritten matter in reverse on the back thereof and a second carbon copy which may at any time be applied to the gelatin printing surface, thereby leaving an impression from which still more copies may be made.
By this method at least three times the number of copies may be obtained than with the usual method of using a single original.
While l have illustrated by one embodiment of my invention it will be understood that various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and l therefore desire to be limited only by the prior art and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention. what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
