Description
y 7, 1937. w. RITZERFELD METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DIiPLICATING RECORDS Filed Nov. 1, 1935 Patented July 27, 1937' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE METHOD AND. APPARATUS FOR DUPLICAT- ING RECORDS 4 Wilhelm Bitzerl'eld, Berlin, Germany Application November 1, 1935, Serial No. 47,777 In Germany November 8, 1934 8 Claims.
- tenedwith a thin him of a readily volatilizing liquid. 7
Heretofore apparatus'were known in which the original or master sheet is secured on a printing drum cooperating with a counter pressure when. A pre-moistened sheet is fed to the contact line of the drum and the counter pressure'roller and thus a copy is taken on the sheet.
In order to have copied single lines or sections, in front of the drum a moistening device of single line width is provided cooperating with a counter pressure roller of the same extension. By this contrivance single lines of the original or master sheet may be printed on pre-moistened'sheets, cards or the like.
The object of the present invention is a method of sectionally or line-by-line copying just in d the opposite way it, e. to take copies from a certain number of originals on a single sheet. This way of copying or duplicating. is "advantageously used for bookkeeping purposes, for material lists etc.
For this reason the sheet to be copied on is secured on a drum which is cooperating with a counter pressure roller. The copy on the sheet is. taken from an original or master sheet being fed to the apparatus with its lines vertically to the axis of the drum.
The moistening device is provided in such a manner, that it may be controlled by a cam and periodically pivoted towards the sheet on the drum.. For bookkeeping purposes the moistening device as welbas the counter pressure roller are provided of single lines width. After each rotation of the drum the sidewards displacing of the moistening device in connectionwith the counter pressure roller is efiected automatically at the width of one line. By this method and by the apparatus for operating according to this method it is possible to copy lists from any desired number of originals or master sheets.
The kirawing illustrates a side elevational view, having parts in sectionof a duplicating machine embodying the principles of the present invention.
Inthe illustrated embodiment a main or printing roller i is rotatably mounted between the two side walls of a rigid machine frame. Printingroller I cooperates with a counter pressure roller 3. A feeding table 4 is mounted in front of the bight of the printing and counter pres;
sure rollers for introducing original sheets bearing copyable mirror-script in between the rollers. A clear copy sheet is tensioned around the circumference of the printing roller I by means of a clamping device I. ing roller I is provided a moistening device 2 slidably connected by means ofa key and keyway to a rotatable spindle l and pressed in the ventional means (not shown) are also provided for displacing the moistening device and preferably also the counter pressure roller by the width of a single line on the spindle l in a direction par- .allel to the axis of the printing roller after each rotation of the printing roller in order to progressively moisten. different portions of the clear sheet tensioned around the printing roller.
From the preceding description the operation of the novel duplicating apparatus will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. In direct contrast to the conventional procedure in which 'a copyable mirror-script original is tensioned around the printing roller, a clear or copy sheet is provided around the circumference of roller i and is fastened thereto by means of. clamping bar I. In the normal position of rest of the apparatus, the nose on cam disc 6 engages the roller associated with actuating lever and maintains moistening means 2 in an inoperative position against the pressure of spring 8. When the apparatus is started and roller I is rotated, actuating lever 5 will become disengaged and the moistening device will .be pressed against the clear or copy sheet around the roller moistening a circumferential and restricted portion thereof. At the same time, a sheet bearing copyable mirror-script original is introduced on feed table l in between the bight of rollers l and 3 and will be pressed against the moistened copy sheet; so that a portion of the original corresponding to the moistened portion of the copy sheet will be permanently imprinted onto the copy sheet. After the first original has been recorded, the moistening device and preferably also the counter pressure roller are displaced in axial direc- In front of the printtion, for example, by the width of a single line,
either manually or automatically so that the apparatus is ready for receiving and permanently recording the second original; This simple procedure is continued until all of the originals have been copied and recorded or the copy sheet has been filled with the matter selectively copied from the various original sheets. Thus, complex bookkeeping problems, material lists, wage lists and the like, may be'handled in a simple and automatic manner and with an almost complete elimination of intellectual effort and of errors.
