8 Claims. 4(Cl. 101e-132) This invention relates to duplicating machines of the general type shown in the application of yAlfred Marchev, Serial No. 67,468, filed March 6, 1936, for margin control for duplicating machines.
Machines of this `type employ master sheets which are mounted upon a drum, and copy sheets are fed into contactwith the master sheet, a suitable solvent being employed to dissolve oi a portion of the ink or carbon'on the master sheet so that the same will be transferred to the copy sheets brought into contact therewith.
Masterysheets have the date to .be duplicated formed thereon in reverse so that, whenv a portion of the ink .is 'dissolved off and transferred to the surface of the copy sheet, it will appear in correct readable form. In practice, some readily volatile solvent such as alcohol is employed. The present invention is embodied in a ma-l chine of the type described which machine-comprises a rotary'drum having means for clamping 1 master sheets thereto.
The machine also' has suitable means for advancing copy sheets to the drum which means includes a pair of feed rollers. One of the feed rollers cooperates with the moistening device so that this feed roller willsupply the volatile solvent to one surface of a copy sheet as it is fed to the drum. A platen roller is employed topress the copy sheets against the master sheetsv secured on the drum.
The present machine embodies certain improvements whereby the changing of the master sheet may be accomplished with greater ease and with a minimum loss of time in the making of copies. It is particularly advantageous where relatively few copies are being made from any master sheet and where it is necessary to change the master sheet quickly.

Referring now to the drawings in which a preferred embodiment ofthe invention is shown, the reference characters 6 and 'i designate a pair of side framesadapted to rest upon any suitable support. The side frames 6 and l are secured together. by any suitable means such as that shown in the aforementioned application. A drum t is rotatably journalled in the side frames 6 and 1 by means of a suitable shaft 9. This drum is adapted to be rotated by means of a hand lever i0 through suitable gearing not shown which gearing is 'housed in a gear housing li on the side frame i.
-The drum 8 has a large gear i2 secured to the end thereof adjacent. to the side frame 1. This gear i2 meshes with 'an intermediate gear i3 that in -turn drives a gear I4 for rotating a combined feeding and moistening'roller I5. A

i5 to 'advance copy sheets to the drum 8, and a platen roller l1 is adapted to press copy sheets against a master sheet on the drum. A moistening receptacle I8 is supported in front of the moistening roller l5. and is ladapted to supply a solvent liquid to the surface of the roller l5 through a suitable wick not shown. A copy sheet table i3 is supported on the side frames 6 and 1 and `projects beneath the moistening receptacle le to aid in feeding copy `sheets Vbetween the rollers i5 land I6.
The drum is provided with a plurality of grippers 2 which are adapted to project through suitable openings 2l -provided in the surface of the drum t and to clamp one edge of a master sheet 22 in a groove 23 which runs longitudinally of the drum t. The grippers 2li are mounted upon a gripper shaft 24 which is journalled in the ends of the drum 8. The shaft 24 has a lever arm 25 xed thereto exteriorly of the drum at one end thereof. This lever 25 has its free end 2t provided with a pin 2'l to which a spring 28 is secured, thea other end of the spring 28 being secured to a pin 29 on the end of the drum.
The lever 25 has a curved cam surface 30 which may be projected beyond the periphery n of the drum in certain instances for a purpose which will be more fully described hereinafter.
The spring 28 normally holds the lever 25 in the position shown in Fig. 2 which is the position for holding the grippers in closed position upon the master sheet 22. The lever carries a roller 3l which'is adapted to be engaged with a plurality of cam levers 32 and 33 that are pivoted upon stub shafts 34 and 35 mounted on the adjacent side frame 1. Coil springs 36 and 31 are secured to the levers 32 and 33, respectively, to normally hold these levers in position shown in Fig. 2. A hand lever 38 hasa hub 39 pivoted on the shaft 9. The hub 39 carries a pair of rollers 40 and 4I which are adapted to engage the cam levers 32 and 33 for moving these levers outwardly into position to force the roller 3| and with it the lever outwardly to effect an opening of the grippers 20.
Referring now to Fig. 3 and Fig. 2, it will be noted that shifting of the-hand lever 38 from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3 causes the roller 4|)A to move the cam lever 32 outwardly into the path of the roller 3| on the lever 25 so as to swing' this lever out-l wardly to open the grippers 2li-and release the master sheet 22. The roller 4| in this position has also forced out the cam lever 33 so that, when the drum rotates aroundto bring the roller 9| over the cam lever 33, the grippers will also 1 b e opened. This latter position of the vd1'um'8 and the lever 25 is shown in Fig. 4.
The master sheet 22 is carried upon a tray 42 which is pivotally mounted upon studs 43 by means of depending side portions 44 and 45 formed onthe tray 42.` The tray 42 is urged toward the drum 8 by means of a spring 46 secured to a pin 41 on the side portion 44, the other end of the spring 46 beingsecured to a collar 48 that is formed on a stud 49 projecting from'the side frame 41. 'Ihe depending portion 44 of the tray 42 has a projection' 58 which extends into engagement with a pin 5| vmounted upon a block 52 which is pivoted upon astub shaft 53 mounted in the'side frame 1. The block 52 carries an adjustable stop member 54 which is adapted -to engage atie` rodl 55 that connects the side framest and 1 to limit the movement of the block 52 in a clockwise direction. A spring 56 (see Fig'; 3), secured to a pin 51 on the block 52 and secured at its other end to the side frame 1 by means of a pin 58, is`
adapted to urge the block 52 in a clockwise direction so as to movel the pin 5| away from the projection 58. The block 52 carries an arm 59 which has a pin 60 that is slidable in a slot 6| of a link 62, the link 62 being pivoted at 63 to a .projection 64 on the hub 39 of the hand lever 3,8.
When the hand lever 38 is in the position shown in Fig. 2, the link 62 pulls the block 52 in a counterclockwise direction so that the pin "5| engages the projection 50 and holds the master tray 42 away from the drum 8. However, when the lever 38 is moved into the position shown in Fig. 3, this permits the block 52 to turn in a clockwise direction so as' to withdraw the pin 5| from the projection 50. The spring 46 then pulls the master vtray 42 down toward the drum 8. f
stop nger v66 is secured to the shaft 61 -pivot-- ally supported by the side portions of the tray 42, and this shaft 61 has a lever arm 68 thereon which extends down along side the end of th drum 8 and carries a roller 69 which is positioned to engage the cam surface 30 of the lever 25. Normally the cam surface '30 is'li'eld in by the spring 28 so that it does not engage the roller as to withdraw the stop finger 66.

However, when the lever 38 is moved to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, this causes the lever 25 to be moved out so that its cam surface 30 engages the roller 69 so as to move the arm 68 in a counterclockwise direction and withdraw the stop finger 66 from beneath the master sheet 22.
The stop member 65, while riding upon the surface of the drum 8, prevents this action from taking place by holding the tray 42 away from the drum. However, when the.grippers 20 approach master sheet receiving position, the stop member 65 drops into a recess lllprovided in the surface of the drum 8, vand this permits the roller 69 to drop down against the surface 30 so The master sheet 22 can then slide down intojthe open grippers 28 by its own Weight after which the operationmay close the grippers by moving the armv 38 back to the position shown in Fig. 2 which will cause the tray 42 to bey lifted back to its resting position and will permit the lever 25 to be drawn inwardly by the spring 28.
'Ihe stop finger 66 operates through an opening 1| in a spring clamp plate 12 secured to the forward edge of the tray 42. The shaft 61 has a squared portion 13 between the side portions 44 and 45 of the tray 42 to which the stop fingers 66 are ixed. The stop fingers 65 are held in raised position by means of a torsion spring 14 which is wound on the shaft 61 and anchored at one end to the lever arm 68 and at the other end to the side 44 of the tray 42.
' The operation of .the device, it is believed, will be clear fromthe description hereinbefore given.
The principal advantage lies in the fact that a master sheet 22 may be placed upon the tray 42 at any time by the operator, and it'Will not be released until such time as the grippers 20 are opened and brought into alignment with the master tray 42. This permits the operator to place fresh master sheets on the tray 42 while he is making copies from a master sheet already applied to the drum 8.
W'hile certain embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modications. Changes, therefore, in the construction andarrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims'in which it is the intention to claim all novelty inherent in the invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.
.Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters to open said clamping means, a master sheet tray,
having means thereon to hold a master sheet in position to be fed into the open clamping means and mechanism operable by the clamp opening means to release the mastersheet held on said tray'when the clamping means is aligned with the master sheet tray in open position.
2. In a duplicating machine of the character described, a frame, a drum pivotally mounted therein, master sheet clamping means on said drum, a master sheet tray having one edge adjacent said drum, a stop member movably mounted adjacent to said edge, and adapted in one position to hold a master sheet on said tray away from the drum, said stop member being movable out of said holding position to permit a master sheet on said tray to advance to the drum, control means to open and clos'e said clamping means, and means operable upon alignment of said clamping means with the adjacent edge of the tray to move the stop member out of holding position when the clamping means is open.
3. In a duplicating machine of the character described, a frame, a drum rotatably journalled therein, master sheet clamping means on said drum, a master sheet tray having one edge adjacent said drum, stop means movably mounted on stop means operable only when the clamping means is in open position and in position to receive a master sheet from said tray, said stop means comprising a stop rlnger extending across the front edge of said tray and pivoted to said tray.

In a duplicating machine of the character described, a frame, a drum rotatably journalled therein, master sheet clamping means on said drum, a master sheet tray having one edge adiacent said drum, stop means movably mounted on said tray to hold a master sheet thereon away from the drum, and mechanism to withdraw said stop means operable only when the clamping means is in open position and in position to rel ceive a master sheet from said tray, said mechanism' comprising a cam movably mounted on the drum and Vmovable outwardly upon opening of said clamping means, and a cam engaging lever arm secured yto said stop means.

In a duplicating machine oi' the character described, a frame, a drum rotatably journalled therein, m'aster sheet clamping means on said l drum, a master sheettray having one edge adjacent said drum, stop means movably mounted on said tray tolhold a master sheet thereon away from the drum, and mechanism to withdraw said stop ymeans operable only when the clamping means is in open position and in position to receive a master sheet from said tray, said mechanism comprising a cam movably mounted on the drum and movable outwardly upon opening of said clamping means, and a cam engaging lever arm secured to said stop means, said drum and tray having cooperating parts to hold said lever arm away from said cam when the clamping means is not in position to receive a master sheet from said tray. In a duplicating machine o! the character described, a frame, a. drum rotatably journalled therein, master sheet clamping means on said drum. a master sheet tray having one edge adjacent said drum, stop means movably mounted on said tray to hold a master sheet thereon away from the drum, and mechanism to withdraw said stop means operable only when the clamping means is in open position and in position to receive a master sheetfrom said tray, said stop means comprising a stop finger extending across the front edge of said tray and pivoted to said tray, said drum and tray having cooperating parts to prevent actuation of said mechanism when the clamping means is not in position to receive aA master sheet from said tray.
