This invention relates to locking devices and more particularly to a combination lock for trunks or other closures.
An object of this invention is to providea novel combination lock which is relatively simplein construction by means of which a trunk lid can be securely locked against opening.
Another objectof this invention is to provide in a locking means of this kind, means whereby the various combinations maybe changed at any time without taking the lock apart, n I
A further object of this invention is to provide a looking means which may be mounted not only on a trunk but on any other closure. the lock including latch -members which can be extended to any desired point so as to engage keepers mounted on the closure.
The above andvarious other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be degdiscribed in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present. preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:-

Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral deslignates generally a trunk or fixed member, and
the numeral 11 designates the lid of the trunk 10 or ahinged closure which is adapted to engage the body or trunk 10. Ahousing 12 which, in the present instance, hasbeen disclosed as a box- 45 ling of substantially rectangular configuration and which is provided at each end with base flanges 13 and 14 is secured by means of bolts 15 or the like to the rear or inner face of the front wall of the trunk 10. A facing plate 16 is interposed between the inner surface of the trunk wall 10 and the outer face of the housing or casing 12, the purpose for which will be hereinafter described.
A slide 17 is mounted within the housing 10 for movement longitudinally thereof, this slide 17 being supported intermediate the rear and front walls of the casing 12 by means of guide members 18 which are secured to'the front wall of the housinglO and by means of L'-shaped guide members 19, which are mounted on the housing 10 for engagement with the rear face of the slide 17.
The housing 12 is provided at one end thereof with an opening 20 through which a latching member or locking bar 21 extends, this locking bar 21 being secured by means of screws or other securing members 22 to the slide 17. The outer end of the locking bar 21 is. provided with an offset locking portion 23 of substantially L-shaped configuration having one leg thereof disposed in a substantially parallel relation to the longitudinal axis of the bar 21. A guide member 24 is mounted on the base flangel by means of screws 25 and supports the locking bar 21 outwardly of the housing 12. A second locking member 26 has one end secured by means of screws or bolts 2? to the opposite end of the slide 17, and the outer or free end of the locking bar 26 is provided with a substantially U-shaped locking portion 28. n
A keeper 29, which is mounted on a bracket 30 carriedby the closure member 11, is adapted to engage the locking portion '23 of the locking memtion for engagement with the locking portion 28 of the locking member 26.
One edge of the slide 17, and in the present instance, the upper edge, is provided with a looking member 33 of substantially L-shaped configuration'which is formed by cutting out a portion of the slide 1'? from the marginal .edge inwardly, and a second locking member 34v is formed with the slide 17 adjacent the end oppositely from the locking member 33; A pair of keepers35 and 36 are mounted on an elongated bracket 3'? and .are adapted to engage the locking members 33' and 34, respectively. A substantial- 1y L-shaped guide member 38 is secured to the upper wall of the housing 12 and engages one face of the slide 17 and coacts with the guide members 19 in slidably mounting the slide 17 within the housing 12 at a point intermediate the inner and outer wall thereof.
A slide operating means, generally designated as 39, which engages the slide 17 for movement thereof comprises a handle so which is secured to a shaft 41 journaled in the housing 12, and a slotted'arm 42 is secured to the shaft 41 within the housing 12, and a bolt 43 is secured to the arm 42 and extends through an elongated slot 44 provided in the slide 17, so that as'the arm 42 is rocked by means of the handle 40, the slide 17 the drum 45 extends and in the present instance,
there are provided two of these slots and a notch 51 in the end of the plate 17. There are also provided three of these locking bars 49 which are mounted in alinement one with another and extend in the same direction.
The web 46 of the drum '45 is provided with a plurality of outstanding pins 52 which are placed in a circle about the shaft 47, and a pin '53 is mounted in the shaft 47 transversely of the shaft and is of a length to engage between pairs of these pins 52 which pins 52 constitute combination changing means by which the combination can be changed at will. A spring 54 is disposed about the shaft 4'. and engages at one end against the web 46, and the opposite end engages against the washer 55 contacting with the inner face of a cover plate 56 which is secured to the housing 12 by means of bolts or screws 57.
The shaft 4? extends loosely through the washer 55 and extends through the cover plate 56, and this extended portion is provided with a peripheral groove 58. between a pair of parallel guides 60 carried by the plate 56, and is held against the outer face of this plate 56 by means of a plurality of connecting guide plates 61, which bridge the guides 60 and engage over the inner face of the slide 53. The slide 59 is provided with elongated slots 52 terminating at one end in an enlarged opening 63, so as to provide a substantially keyshaped slot. The opening 63 is of a size to permit the greatest diameter of the shaft 4'7 to loosely pass therethrough, whereas the slot 62 is adapted to engage in the peripheral groove 58 provided adjacent the outer end of each shaft 47. In this manner, the slide 59, when in the position shown in Figure 5, will prevent longitudinal movement of the shaft 47 while permitting rotary movement thereof.
An operating member 64 is secured to the outer end of the shaft 47 and is provided with a round inner end portion 65 disposed closely adjacent the outer surface of the plate 16. This enlarged portion 65 may be provided with a notch 66 or other indicia, and the outer surface of the plate 16 is provided with a plurality of circumferentially disposed markings or graduations 67 which, in the present instance, have been disclosed as letters of the alphabet, although I, of course, do not wish to be limited to this particular type of marking, as numerals or other graduations may also beused. Preferably, the trunk 10 is provided with a plurality of recesses 68, so as to countersink the combination knobs 64 so that they will not be injured during the use .or movement of the trunk In the operation and use of this locking means, the shafts 47 may be pulled outwardly after the slide 59 has been moved in one direction to permit longitudinal movement of the shafts 47 and the indicia 66 on the plates or knobs 64 maybe each adjusted to the desired point so that any A slide 59 is slidably mounted desired combination of indicia will dispose the holes 48 in the drums 45 in alinement with each other so as to permit the operating means 39 to shift the slide 17 and carry the locking members movable with the slide 1'? out of engagement with the keepers. When the holes 48 of all of the drums 45 are in alinement with each other, the operating member 39 can be swung in a direction to move the pins 49 through the holes 48 and thereafter, the drums 45 cannot be rotated until the slide 17 has been moved into locking position.
It will be noted, however, that notwithstanding the position of the slide 1'? with respect to the drums 45, the combination of each drum can be changed by simply moving the slide 59 so that the enlarged opening 63 will be disposed about the inner end of the shafts 4'7, thereby permitting the knobs 64 to be pulled outwardly to carry the combination selecting member 53 out of engagement with the upstanding pins 52.
While I have shown the combination as being mounted on a trunk or the like, I, of course, do not wish to be limited to this particular construction as, if desired, the locking means herein disclosed maybe mounted on'any other desired container or housing.
- It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:- I
1. A locking means as set forth comprising a casing, a slide in the casing, cylindrical members mounted in the casing, a plate secured to each member and extending diametrically thereof, said cylindrical members each having an aperture therethrough, a pin carried by the slide adjacent each cylindrical member for en agement in the aperture to permit movement of the slide,'a shaft rotatably carried by the and extending through a plate to rotatably mount the cylindrical member in the casing, an operating member carried by the shaft, coacting means carried by the shaft and the plate to hold the cylindrical member against movement relative to the shaft while permitting movement of the shaft transversely of the casing, yielding means engaging the shaft to hold the coacting means against movement, and operating means for the slide extending exteriorly of the casing.
2. A locking means as set forth comprising a casing, aslide in the casing, means for slidably mounting the slide in the casing, operating means for the slide, said operating means having a portion thereof disposed exteriorly of the casin'g a plurality'of apertured drums, a web for each drum, a shaft for each drum extending through the web and rotatably engaging the casing, said shaft also rotatably engaging the web, coacting means carried by the web and the shaft to hold the shaft against rotation relative to the drum, a spring disposed about the shaft and holding the latter named means against movement, means disposed exteriorly of the' casing and engaging each shaft for rotation thereof, and locking means engaging the inner end of each shaft to hold the shaft against longitudinalmovement while permitting rotary movement thereof JAMES OPIE.
