4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in lock mechanisms.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved lock mechanism embodying a lock bolt of such nature as to prevent a burglar from sawing through the same.
Burglars very often saw off the lock bolts by insertion of a fine saw between the face plate and door jamb. It is an object of this invention to prevent the sawing off of the lock bolt by movably mounting the latter upon a retractible lock bolt frame in such manner that the lock bolt will move with the saw. It is thus substantially incapable of being severed by sawing.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved lock mechanism embodying a dual lock bolt construction mounted upon a single lock bolt retractible frame.
Other objects and advantages of this invention 2 will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part.
of this specification, and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a lock mechanism showing that portion of the same which includes the lock bolt details and the associated mechanism, with the lock bolts retracted.
Figure 2 is a View similar to Figure 1 with the lock bolts projected from the face plate of the lock case, in looking position.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken through the portion of the lock bolt frame upon which the lock bolts are rotatably mounted.
Figures 4 and 5 are fragmentary sectional views taken substantially on their respective lines in Figure 1 of the drawing.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown only a preferred embodiment of the invention, the letter A may generally designate the lock mechanism, which may include a case B of any approved nature having the improved lock bolt mechanism C associated there- 'with. "A look or other means I) is mounted upon the case B for actuating the tumbler mechanism E and the retraction or projection of the lock bolt mechanism C.
The lock case B may include a face plate 10,
preferably differentiating from conventional construction in that it is provided with a pair of circular openings 11 and 12 for the slidable reception of the cylindrical lock bolts 13 and 14 respectively, of the lock bolt mechanism C to be subsequently described. The case B furthermore includes the opposite side walls 15 and 16, as shown in Figure 5, and the marginal boundary walls 17, of any approved nature and construction, since the application of the improved lock or dead bolt mechanism may be made to pracf tically any type of lock mechanism embodying a movable locking bolt.
The lock bolt mechanism C preferably includes a reciprocating frame 20 mounted in the lock case, and having a slot 22 therein which lies normal to the length of the face plate, and which assists in guiding the lock frame 20 towards and away from the face plate. A fixed fence or stump 23 is rigidly carried by one of the side walls of the case B, the same being polygonal in cross section and extending through the space 22 to enable the above mentioned guiding of the lock bolt frame 20. At its end facing the face plate, the frame portion 20 of the lock bolt mechanism C has a flange 25, which, as is shown in the 5. drawing, is provided with a pair of sockets 2'7 and 28 for the rotatable seating of the inner ends of the cylindrical lock bolts 13 and i l therein. These sockets may be circular in plan if desired, or as shown in the drawing the surface of the frame 20 facing the face plate may be flanged at its opposite ends and in the center to provide the sockets 27 and 28, which open at opposite sides.
The lock bolts 13 and 14 are preferably of 5?. solid hardened steel. They are preferably of the same size and cylindrical in cross section. At their inner ends each of the same is annularly grooved at 30, or in lieu of such groove the said ends of the lock bolts may be annularly flanged to serve the same purpose. A detachable plate clip 35 is held by a machine screw or bolt 37 in place upon the face plate facing surface of the frame 20, as shown in Figures 1, 3 and 5 of the drawing, and which is shaped to marginally enter the annular grooves of the lock bolts for the purpose of retaining the latter in their respective sockets. This clip retains the bolts in their sockets so that they may readily rotate. The lock bolts are of such length that when the lock mechanism C is fully retracted the outer ends of the lock bolts still lie in the face plate openings 11 and 12 provided therefor, with the outer ends of the lock bolts flush with the jamb facing surface of the face plate, as shown in Figure 1. Thus there is no tendency of the lock bolts to be tipped out of position from the supporting frame 20.
Any approved type of tumbler mechanism and cam operating mechanism may be provided for 1 actuating the lock bolt mechanism C. By way of illustration there is shown a slidable tumbler 40 which is spring actuated at 41, and which depresses in a line normal to the path of movement of the lock bolt mechanism, in order to cooperate with the stump 23 for actuating the bolt mechanism into locked or unlocked positions. The actuating lock D may include any approved type of cam arm or roll back construction 45 for depressing the tumbler 40 in order to actuate the lock bolts.
The lock bolts 13 and 14 of course are freely rotatable upon the supporting frame 20, and When in projected position as shown in Figure 2 it can readily be understood with What difficulty a burglar would meet in an attempt to saw through either of the lock bolts. The bolts would merely turn with movement of the saw.
Various changes in the shape, size, and arrangment of the of the details of the lock bolt mechanism and the case and associated structure may be made to the form of invention illustrated and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention within the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a lock mechanism the combination of a casing, a lock bolt mechanism including a nonrotatable rectilinear slidable frame in the casing, a cylindrical shaped elongated lock bolt member having an external continuous circumferential groove at its inner end, means upon the slidable frame extending into said groove and connecting the bolt member for unrestricted rotation in either direction upon said frame and for rectilinear sliding therewith, and means for reciprocating the lock bolt mechanism in order to project or re" tract the freely rotatable bolt member with respect to the casing.
2. In a lock mechanism the combination of a casing, a lock bolt mechanism movably mounted therein including a non-rotatable rectilinear slidable frame, a plurality of elongated substantially cylindrical hardened steel bolt members having their inner ends each provided with an endless circumferential groove, and a detachable detent mounted upon the said frame and extending into both of said grooves to prevent the longitudinal movement of the bolt members away from said frame and permitting their free rotational move ment to any degree in either direction, the casing having openings therethrough for slidable extension of the bolt members.
3. In a lock mechanism the combination of a casing, a lock bolt mechanism movably mounted in the casing including a non-rotatable rectilinear slidable frame, a plurality of elongated substantially cylindrical hardened steel bolt members each having similar ends provided with an external endless circumferential groove, a single detachable detent upon the frame located in a space between said bolt members projecting into each of said bolt member grooves to mount the said bolt members upon the frame against longitudinal movement away therefrom and permitting free and full rotational movement of each of the bolt members thereon to any degree in either direction about the respective axes thereof, the said casing having a wall provided with openings therein slidably receiving and supporting the said bolt members outwardly beyond the said detent.
a. In a lock mechanism the combination of a casing, a lock bolt mechanism including a nonrotatable rectilinearly slidable frame mounted in the casing, a cylindrical-shaped elongated lock bolt member seated upon said slidable frame for unrestricted rotation in either direction about its axis, the said lock bolt member at its end adjacent to the slidable frame having a flange, and means upon the slidable frame rigid therewith disposed forwardly of said flange to prevent a longitudinal movement of the said bolt member away from its seat upon said frame and permitting the unrestricted free rotational movement of the bolt member to any degree in either direction about its axis.
