My invention relates to washing machines and has for its object to provide a locking device for the sliding door of the cylinder of the machine of such construction that it can be easily operated and which preferably includes a pivoted finger which is operated in synchronism with the locking bolt so as to be retracted when the cylinder is closed and locked and to project outward into the door opening of the cylinder casing when the cylinder door is open.
The nature of my improvements will be best understood as described in connection with the drawings which illustrate portions of a washing machine casing and cylinder provided with the usual door closed openings and equipped with my improved looking device.
Figure l is a front View of the cylinder and its door, the door being in closed position and provided with my improved locking device.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view of the parts shown in Fig. 1, taken on the line 11 of Fig. l. I

A indicates the cylinder casing having a door opening A having a door J indicated as in open position, the edge of which is indicated in the drawing. B is the cylinder of the machine having a door opening B and provided with guides indicated at B beneath which lie the lateral edges of the door C, which is a sliding door having a hook C at its rear edge which engages a similar hook B of the cylinder when the door is closed, as shown in Fig. 2. This sliding door has a depressed pocket C formed at its front edge in which is located and secured the depressed locking bolt housings DD. These bolt housings are formed with open faced chambers D near one lateral side of which extends upwardly a rib (Z providing the chamber all so located as to provide 1927. Serial No. 209,618.

G having as shown an upwardly extending grip G at its free end and an upwardly extending pin G which lies in the slot F of the bolt. H is a pivot pin secured in the side of the chamber D and on which is'pivoted a finger H which in retracted position lies in the chamber D as shown in full lines in Figs. 4: 5 and 6 but which can be turned up to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5. This finger is interconnected with the bolt by means of a forked end H which extends over the pin F 3 projecting from the side of the bolt.
I, best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, indicates a strip secured to the wall of the cylinder and having at its ends bolt holes, one indicated at I to receive the bolt when the door is closed and one indicated at I to receive the bolt when the door is fully open. The detent hole I is shallow so that while it serves to lock the door in open position it does not permit the bolt to move out to its full throw.
In operation, when the door is closed, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the end F of the bolt is engaged in the bolt hole I and the position of the parts is such that the finger H is fully retracted within the chamber D When it is desired to open the door the operator inserts his fingers in the chamber D and against the rib while his thumb extending into the chamber D engages the grip G? of the lever G enabling the operator to shift the lever from the position shown in full lines to that shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, with little effort and much power. This motion of the lever draws back the bolt, which in moving back through the described mechanism throws the finger H into upright position. The door is then slid to open position and a rib I is provided on the strip I to contact with the end of the bolt and keep it in retracted position. When the door is fully opened the bolt is engaged with the shallow bolt I looking the door in open position but still keeping the finger H in outwardly extending positionso that it is only when the door is closed and bolted that the door of the casing can be closed.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors Patent is:
1. In combination with a washing machine cylinder having a sliding door and a bolt hole formed to register with a locking bolt when the door is closed, a depressed open faced bolt housing secured to the door formed with an upwardly extending rib dividing the housing into two compartments of unequal size and adapted to serve as a linger grip for an operator in actuating the bolt lever, a vertical pivot pin located in the larger compartment of the housing, a bolt passing through the housing and a bolt actuating lever pivoted on the vertical pivot and movable horizontally in the larger housing compartment.
2. In combination with a washing machine cylinder having a sliding door and a bolt hole formed to register with a locking bolt when the door is closed, a depressed open faced bolt housing secured to the door formed with an upwardly extending rib forming a finger rest for the hand of an operator, a spring actuated bolt extending through the depression in the housing, a bolt actuating lever pivoted in the depression having its free end disposed in the housing opposite to the rib in position to be engaged by the thumb of the operator, a finger pivoted in the depression in the housing and movable between positions in which it lies entirely within said depression and extends upward therefrom and means actuated by the movements of the bolt whereby said finger is retracted within the depression when the bolt is in looking position and turned outward when the bolt is retracted.
