JOHN EDWARD NEALY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
' VENDING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedFeb. 1916.
Application filed. May 1'7, 1915. Serial Ila-28,573.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN EDWARD NEALY,
State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vending Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vending ma' chines and it has for its object to provide an improved article of this nature adapted for use in railway coaches and arranged to render accessible a table and a deck of cards when a coin of the proper denomination is deposited in the machine and the handle thereof is actuated.
In my co-pending application Serial Number 28,581 filed May 17, 1915, I have illustrated and claimed a coin controlled table irrespective of the type of dispensing mechanism employed. r
The present invention relates to the particular type of dispensing mechanism employed irrespective of the particular kind of table used and irrespective of the particular coin controlled mechanismused in conjunction therewith, said coin controlled mechanism having been made the subject matter of a separate application, Serial No. 28,580, filed May 17, 1915.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vending machine constructed in accordance with the inven tion; Fig.2 is a transverse vertical sectional looking toward the locking rod; Fig. 4 is a" view partly in plan and partly in horizontal section; Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view; and Fig. 6 is a detail view of the upper end of the lock bar.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawing, 5 designates a casing. This casing is divided into an upper compartment 6 and a lower compartment 7 by a horizontal wall 8. A door 9 is hinged to the casing at 10' and closes the front of the lower compartment 7. The L shaped member comprises the front wall 11 and a top wall 12 which constitutes the front and the top of the compartment 6. Side walls of the casing 5 carry strap 13 having horizontal inturned portions 14 beneath which the edges of the top 12 of the L shaped member slides. A look 15 is carried by the top 12 and the b olt'16 of this look is controllable by a key not shown when placed in a key hole 17; The bolt enters a recess 18 formed.
in the side wall of the casing 5 and consequently holds said L shaped member against movement. A coin slot 19 provides means for insertinga coin in a coin chute 20.
When a coin is deposited in this coin chute it strikes upon the'tail 21 of a lever 22. This leveris pivoted at 23 to the wall 11. Its opposite end is forked at 2 1 to straddle a stud 25 of'a sleeve 26. This sleeve is slidably mounted in a, bracket 27 and carries a pair of circumferential flanges 28. the i. shaped'member comprising walls 11 and 12 is slipped into place these flanges are caused to engage the opposite sides of the bent end 29 of a lock bar 30. The end 29 being recessed at 31, whereby vertical movement of the sleeve 26 will be imparted to thelock bar. The'lock bar is inclosed When within a housing 32and'is mounted for limited vertical movement upon studs 33 which pass through slots 34 of the lock bar. The
look bar is cut out at 35'to provide tongues j 36, which tongues, when the lock bar is moveddownwardly, pass through the horizontal portions'37 of ears 38 carried by door 9. Springs 39 normally tend to throw the door open and consequently when the tongues 36 aremoved upwardly out of engagement with the ears 38 it follows that the door will open and render the interior of the compartment accessible so that whatever is contained therein may be removed. A coin deposited in chute 20 and resting upon the tail 21 of lever 22 lies in the path of movement of a curved lever 40 carried by the shaft of a handle ll and should this handle be actuated during the time that a coin is in this position, the right hand end of the lever 22 inFig. 2 will be depressed and the opposite end thereof will be raised and through the connections described the lock bar 30 will be raised against the action of a spring 42. The housing .32 is held in It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction shown but that it includes within its purview such changes as come within the spirit of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claimis:-
1. A vending machine comprising an elongated casing divided by a horizontal wall into a small upper compartment and a large lower compartment, a locking rod within the casing, a door for closing the lower compartment which door is controlled by said locking rod, a vertically movable member located in the upper compartment and detachably engaging said locking rod and an l. shaped member for closing the front and top of said upper compartment and by which said member is carried.
2. A vending machine comprising an elongated casing divided by a horizontal wall into a small upper compartment and large lower compartment, a locking rod within the casing, a door for closing said lower compartment, means carried by the door arranged to be engaged by said looking rod, a wall slidable into position with relation to the upper compartment and completing said upper compartment when placed in position, and means carried by said wall for controlling said locking rod.
3. In a device of the character described,
an elongated casing divided into an upper compartment and a lower compartment, a
vertically movable locking rod extending along the edge of the lower compartment, a door for closing said lower compartment, means carried by said door arranged to be engaged by said locking rod, a bent end upon the top of said locking rod having a recess formed therein, an L shaped member comprising a front and a top wall slidable into position with relation to the upper compartment and completing said compartment when placed in position, a vertically movable -sleeve having flanges arranged to engage the bent end of the locking lever when said L shaped member is slipped into position and means carried by said L shaped member for controlling said locking rod.
l. A vending machine comprising an elongated casing divided into a small upper compartment and a large lower compartment, a door arranged to close the front of said lower compartment, a'vertically disposed locking rod for locking said door which locking rod extends into said upper compartment, a movable wall for said upper compartment and a locking mechanism mounted upon said movable wall and movable into position to engage said locking rod when said wall is placed in position, and key controlled locking means for locking said movable wall in place.
5. A vending machine comprising an elongated vertically disposed casing divided by a horizontal wall into a small upper compartment and a large lower compartment, a door hinged to the front of the casing and servingwto close the front of the lower compartment, a vertically disposed locking rod extending along one side of the lower compartment and passing through said horizontal wall, interengaging members betweensaid locking rod and said door, said upper compartment having a removable side wall and a locking mechanism mounted upon said side wall and movable into engagement with said locking rod by the placing or" said side wall in position.
In testimony whereof I alliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
