UNiTED STAT S PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN SCHADE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COIN-OPERATED MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,749, dated May 2, 1893.
\ Application filed August 31,1892. Serial No. 444,647. (No model.)
To all whom, it may'concern: I
Be it known that I, JOHN SGHADE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coin-Operated Mechanism forVending-Nlachines and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a horizontal see- Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lock with delivery plate removed. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the plug. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line w wof Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on line y y Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a horizontal section taken on line 10 20 Fig. 5.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in coin-operated Vending apparatus, being especially designed as an improvement on the device set forth in my patent No.470,508,granted March 8, 1892.
The object of the invention is to provide a lock and delivery mechanism for a vending machine, which shall only be capable of operation by the insertion of two or more coins of agiven denomination, instead of by a single coin, as. in the said patent, safeguards being provided-to prevent the fraudulent operation of the device.
A further object is to improve the arrangement of the push and delivery mechanism.
With these objects. in View, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and pointed out in the accompanying claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a casing or closure, which may be of any suitable form or style, having a package receptacle, such as B, and a delivery chute, as C.
D is a cylindric bushing or sleeve,in which bears a rotary plug or cylinder E, having therethrough the coin slot at. Said sleeve and plug are arranged in substantially the same manner as in my said patent, but each is made about twice as long, so that the coin slot at, will contain two coins of the proper denomination at the same time, one above the other, in edgewise position. The plug is locked against operation, except upon the insertion of the proper coins, by means of the pins 1), and the spring-actuated tumblers c, in the same manner as in the said patent; but in the present case, one set of each such pins and tumblers is provided for each coin, those which are acted upon by the coin in the .upper portion of the slot a, being'above and in the vertical line of those which are operated by the lower coin.
In the drawings, I have shown the pins and tumblers located so as to admit such a coin only as possesses exactly the proper thickness, as well as the proper diameter, but I may if desired, omit the pins which project to the center of the slot, and use only those at the end thereof, which prevent the use of any coin except that of the given diameter. The first coin which is placed in the slot or, falls to the lower portion of the plug until stopped by the slotted bottom plate F. The second coin rests upon the first. Consequently, when the push arm is operated, each set of the pins is acted upon by its own coin, the lock is released, and both coins fall through the bottom plate'into the coin drawer or receptacle;
If but one coin is inserted, but one set of pins will be acted upon, and the plug still remains locked. v
G designates the push and delivery plate, having the handle portion g projecting from the case into convenient position for operation, and the plate portion which lies above and over the upper end of the plug and cylinder, and the forward end of which is arranged to project within the lower portion of the package holder to eject a package or article therefrom into the delivery chute. Said plates work in the lateral guides f, f, in which they have a free endwise movement. Secured to the upper end of the plug is an arm H, which, at its outer portion, carries a vertical stud or projection 71. which engages a slot it cut in the marginal edge of the plate. Through the plate G and arm H are narrow registering coin slots, which communicate with the slot a in the plug. p
K is a knife or cutter, which is for the purpose of preventing the fraudulent operation too of the device by means of a string or cord attached to a coin, said knife or cutter in such a case acting to sever such cord or string. Said cutter is pivoted at its central portion to a small pin is, projecting from the sleeve or bushing, underneath the plate G, and its cutting edge is normally above and in line with the rear edge of the coin slot in the arm H. In the other arm K of the cutter, is anarrow elongated slot j, which loosely engages a pin j on the outer portion of the arm H.
The operation is as follows: The coins are first inserted in the plug through a suitable chute in the case. The push arm is then operated, causing the coins to act upon the pins and tumblers to release the lock, and the plug is partially rotated, permitting the forward portion of the push arm to move sufficiently to eject the article or package. During this operation, the arm H exerts acam movement upon the knife or cutter K, bringing the cutting edge of the latter across the slot, sufiiciently to sever any connection by which the coin might be suspended. Springs L, L, connected to the under side of the plate G, and to the rod L serve to return said plate to its original position after the package has been ejected.
It will be understood that I do notlimit myself to a machine operated by coins of any particular denomination, as this will depend upon the character and value of the goods which it is intended to dispense.
I also wish it understood that, although in the drawings I have shown, and have hereinbefore described a machine designed to be operated by two coins, I may if desired adapt it to be operated by three or more coins by the provision of a set of pins and tumblers for each coin, with a corresponding elongation of the plug and sleeve.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a coin operated vending machine, the combination with a delivery mechanism, and the rotary plug actuating said mechanism and having a coin slot therethrough, of the tumbler locks for said plug, said locks requiring the simultaneous presence of two or more coins in said slot to effect their operation, substantially as specified.
' 2. In a coin operated vending machine, the
combination with a delivery mechanism, and a rotary plug actuating said mechanism and having a coin slot therethrough, of the tumbler lock for said plug, said lock having means whereby it can only be released by the simultaneous presence in said slot of two or more coins in superposed, edgewise position, substantially as specified.
3. In a coin operated vending machine, the combination of the sleeve on bushing, the bottom plate, the rotary plug in said sleeve or bushing and having the coin slot therethrough, the delivery mechanism operated by said plug, the pins and the spring actuated tumblers forming a lock for said plug, said pins and tumblers being so arranged as to be capable of operating to release said plug only by the simultaneous presence of two or more coins in said slot, substantially as specified.
4:. In a coin operated vending machine, the combination with the rotary plug having the coin slot therethrough, of the arm secured to said plug, the pin on said arm, and the reciprocating push and delivery plate having a slot engaging said pin, substantially as specified.
5. In a coin operated vending machine, the
plate having a movable connection with said arm, one end of said plate being arranged to project within the package holderorreceptacle to eject a package therefrom, and the other end portion projecting to form a handle, the guides for said plate-and the knife or cutter pivoted at its central portion, and having an elongated slot, loosely engaging a pin on said arm, substantially as specified.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
