Be it known that l. SAMUEL RowmNn FABRICS, subject at the Kingo't Great Britain, residing at liretoria l vorks. \Villcnhall, in the county of Statlord, England. have invented a new and useful Lock; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention comprises 'lIl'lllIfOVClllClliS in fastening devices for doors, windows and the like.
it is usual to provide a door with at least one lock or latch and one or two bolts, but it is impossible to actuate these bolts from outside of the door so that when the door is fastened from the outside, as in a. lock-up shop, the bolts are quite useless, the only effective :lt'astcning employed being the loclc or latch.
The object of my present invention is to provide a fastening device which is particularly usc'tul upon the doors of loelcup shops, though it may also be employed upon windows for lilce purposes, and in accordance therewith I employ in combination with a latch one or more bolts actuated by the handle which controls the latch and preferably also a locking device whereby both the latch and the bolts may be locked in their secured positions.
Referring to the drawings :--F igure 1. is an elevation of part of a door with my fastening device in position. Fig. 2. is a rear view with the cover plate removed showing the mechanism for controlling the bolts the bolt controls being in their retracted position. Fig. 3. is a similar View as when the bolts are in their advanced position. Fig. 4. is an interior .view showing the locking and latching mechanism the lock being in its inoperative position. Fig. is a similar view to Fig. iwith the lock bolt advanced. Fig. 6. illustrates the cam for controlling the bolts. Figs. 7 and 8. show the follower which actuates the latch and the cam for operating the bolts. Fig. 9. is a view showing one of the bolt controls removed.
In carrying my invention into practice as illustrated upon the accompanying drawings the controlling mechanism is contained within the casing 1 and embodies a follower 2 carried by a squared spindle 3 which also carries the controlling handle 4:, whose. normal position is preferably horizontal as shown in Fig. 1. The bolts 5) are carried in suitable guides 10 upon the door ll and their extremities are adapted to engage sockets 12 carried on the door Frame '1 The casing is divided into two compartments by the removable plate 'l-t, the mechanism illustrated in Figs. t and 5 being on one side of this plate. while the mechanism illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 is in the other compartment. In the second compartment are located two sliding members '15 having on their extremities pegs or projections '16 which engage cm'rcsponding openings in the bolts t) or are otherwise so cmmcctcd that when the slides are actu-- ated the bolts more with them. ()11 the inner extremities of the slides are other projections 17 which engage notches 18 in the controlling dislc 10 which fits around the "follower. the. follower having a projection E which engages with one of the extremities of the notch 21 when the handle and fol.- lower are moved snllicicntly. These parts are illustrated in their normal position by Fig. 9, and when the handle is depressed in manner previously explained although the latch will be retracted yet the bolts will not be operated. for the depression of the handle will not bring the projection 20 to the bottom of the opening 91.
To actuate the bolts it is necessary to more the handle in the reverse direction to bring it into a vertical position, when the projection 20 will engage the upper end of the recess 21 thereby rotating the disk '19, and through the projection 17 and notches 18 will advance the slide 15 and bolts 9.
The locking mechanism is designed to 0peratc when the handle is in the vertical posi tion and the bolts are ad anced, the lock bolt 22 lazing arranged to engage with a projection 23 on the :lollowcr when in a suitable position. lVhen the :t'ollowcr is in the position shown by Fig. 4- it prevents the lock bolt being :nlvanced. but when in the posi tion shown by Fig. 5 the lock bolt may be 'lully advanced when it is impossible to retate the follower as the projection 23 engages with the lock bolt. and obviously when the loclc has been actuated itis impossible for the handle to be moved to either retract the latch or the bolts. The spring 24 is employed to retain the follower in position.
It will be obvious that the bolts might be arranged to move in any suitable direction in addition to that illustrated, as parallel to the direction of movement of the latch, while if desired only one bolt might be used or more than two.
Although the invention is particularly applicable to the doors of lock-up shops yet it may also be applied to casement windows or the like, in which case the bolts might be arranged to engage with a plurality of sockets or projections in the window sill or in the top of the window or in a quadrant plate, or other fixture attached thereto whereby the window may be securely fastened in a partially open position andlocked thereat.
It will be seen that by this invention I provide a combined latch and bolt fastening Which is operated by a single handle which may be entirely actuated from the outside of the door or window and Which may be locked from either side.
What I claim then is 1. In a fastening device for doors, windows and the like, the combination of a spindle; a handle carried by said spindle; a spring advanced latch bolt; a roll back carried by said spindle and engaging said latch bolt whereby the latch bolt is retracted when the handle is moved in a suitable direction; a pair of sliding bolts each having a proj ecting member; a disk carried by said spindle and having notches which engage with said projections on the bolts; a radially pro ject-ing member carried by the spindle en-' gaging an annular slot or opening in the disk whereby said disk will move with the spindle after a limited independent move ment thereof.
2. In a fastening device for doors, win dows and the like, the combination of a spindle; a handle carried by said spindle; a
spring advanced latch bolt; a roll back carried by said spindle and engaging said latch bolt whereby the latch bolt is retracted when the handle is moved in a suitable direction; a pair of sliding bolts each having a projecting member; a disk carried by said spindle and having notches which engage with said projections on the bolts; a radially projecting member carried by the spindle engaging an annular slot or opening in the disk whereby said disk will move with the spindle after a limited independent movement of said spindle; and a key actuated locking device for retaining said sliding bolts and spring latch bolt in their advanced positions 3. In a fastening device for doors, windows and the like, the combination of a spindle; a handle carried by said spindle; a spring advanced latch belt; a roll back carried by said spindle and engaging said latch bolt whereby the latch bolt is retract-ed when the handle is moved in a suitable direction; a pair of sliding bolts each having a projecting member; a disk carried by said spindle and having notches which engage with said projections on the bolts; a radially projecting member carried by the spindle engaging an annular slot or opening in the disk whereby said disk will move with the spindle after a limited independent move ment of said spindle; and a key actuated lock bolt arranged to advance and engage with the aforementioned roll back to prevent retraction of the spring latch bolt and the sliding bolts.
