Be it known that I, CARLTON NEWMAN, of the city 'and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented an j Improved Demijohn-Case; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, 'reference being had i to the accompanying drawings.
The necessity of protecting such large bottles and demijohns a s are intended to contain either Corrosive, dangerous, or valuable liquids has resulted in establishing incased bottles as an article ot' commerce. These inca-sed bottles consist of an outside wooden case or boxing, inside of which the bottle or demijohn is placed, and surrounded with suitable elastic packing, which protects it from being broken by ordinary jolts and'jars, and which also protects it from many other accidents to which an uncased bottle is liable. A necessary feature of this business is that the box or case shall be so constructed that the contents of the bottle or demijohn can be poured out without taking the bottle or demijohn out of the case, and without spilling any of its contents.
This has been accomplished heretofore either by narrowing the top of the box on two sides from a point opposite the swell of the bottle upward toward its top, and leaving a side opening through which the liquid could be poured when the box or case was tipped upon its edge, or by making the top of the box flat, and allowing the neck of the bottle to project above it through a hole in the top. In the first-named class, also, the fasteningscrew which secured the cover to the box was left to project above the cover or top.
These cases, however, are objectionable, because theycannot be placed one on top of the other, so that in packing them in cars or other vehicles of transportation they can only be carried .with safety when carried one box deep, thus materially increasing their cost of transportation because of the large amount of space required to stow them.
The object of my invention, therefore, is to construct the cases or boxes of a uniform size from bottom to top, and to leave their tops perfectly flat and unobstructed, and at the same time 'provide means by which the contents of the bottle or 'demijohn can be poured.

In constructing this box I carry two of 'the sides (marked C G) upward far enough to allow them to support the fiat top D of the cover above the top of the bottle. The other two sides, e e, extend upward only a little higher than the swell of the body of the bottle, so that the neck of the bottle will project above them. This allows the liquid which is contained in the bottle to be poured out on either of these low sides; or drop-doors could be hinged to each of the low sides which would drop down when the top cover is removed.
The cover is made, as above mentioned, with a flat top, D. On two opposite sides of this flat top I secure side pieces f f, which extend downward and rest upon the upper edges of the low sides of the box e e, so as to complete the closing of the boxwhen the cover ispnt on.` Cross-bars g g extend in opposite directions across the under side of the top D near each end, so as to fit down inside of the projecting ends of the sides C G, and thus lock the cover in such a manner as to prevent it from being displaced sidewise. If desired, all four of the sides could be made low, in which case l 'will provide a flat cover with four pieces corresponding with 'the side pieces f f, and employ a depending bar upon each of two opposite sides, which will extend down inside of the box so that the screws can be inserted into them through the sides, all as represe'nted at Fig. 2, but I prefer the former method.
The screws which I empioy have each a smooth shank, K, between the head and the screw-portion. I then make a small hole, i, through the shank close to the screw.
This screw I first pass through a hole in a plate, m, and secure it by passing a short wire through the pin-hole i, and bending it around.

I then secure the plate m to the box, so that the screw will pass through the hole in the side of the box intended for it. This length of shank is sufficient to allow the screw to enter the cross-bar g and fasten the cover. By this arrangement the'screw forms a permanent part of the box, so that the person who removes the cover need not be particular how many times he turns it.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s
1. The eombination, with a box for containing bottles and demijohns, the upper end of whicha is of the same size as the body of the box, and provided with the side pieces U C, of the flat removable top or cover D, provided with the bars g g and screws h h, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a square-top box of the screw provided with the shank K be-' tween the head and screw-portion, pin-hole ?2, and wire, and the plate m, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
