Description
C. NEWMAN. Demijohn-fi asei Patented March 23 1 1875.
Inventor Vitnesses THE GRAPHIC CD.PHOT0.-Ll"l'l1-39&4-l PARK PLAGLNX.
CARLTON NEWMAN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEMlJOHN-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 6 LQGQ, dated March 23, 1875; application filed February 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARLTON NEWMAN, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Improved Demijohn- Case; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or improvement.
My invention relates to an improved case or box for containing a glass bottle or demijohn, and inside of which the bottle or demijohn is surrounded with a suitable packing for protecting it from the effect of the jars and shocks to which it is subjected during transportation.
Myimprovement consists in so constructing the box or case that it not only protects the bottle or demijohn from breakage, but will admit of its ready removal from the case, when desired, as will be more fully set forth in the following description, in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view of my case, closed. Fig. 2 shows the case with the cover removed. Fig. 3 is a View of the cover.
Let A represent an open-top box, of any desired size and shape to suit the body of the bottle or demijohn B, which is to be packed and cased. The opposite sides 01 d of this box or case I make but slightly higher than the body of the bottle or demijohn, so that the neck of the bottle will project above them, as shown, while the other two opposite sides 6 e I taper upward, from the sides at d, in the form of a gable, so that the gables will be higher than the top of the bottle B. The point of the gables, thus constructed, I out 01f, so as to provide a plane surface, and upon this surface I secure a metal plate, g.
On the outside of each of the gable-ends e e, and just below the tops of the sides d d, I secure a wooden strip, h, which extends entirely across the ends of the case. The case cover is constructed similar to the roof of a building, with two'sloping sides, i t, and a horizontal top strip, j, secured together by wooden braces or gables K, as shown. The cover is of the proper size to fit down over the truncated gables of the box or case, and the braces or gables K of the cover are placed far enough from the ends of the cover to fit down inside of the box-gables, and allow the horizontal top strip j to rest upon the metal plate g, outside of them. The sloping sides of the cover will then form a root for the case, as represented. Screws m m are then used to secure the horizontal strip j to the gables. A lock can be employed, it desired, to secure the cover to the sides of the case. When this cover is removed, the entire top of the case is open, so that the bottle or demijohn B can be removed without trouble. The outside strips h It will serve as handles or griping-pieces for the hand when moving the case about. I thus provide a cheap and very convenient case for bottles, which has the advantage of allowing the bottle to be easily removed, when desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A bottle or demijohn box or case, A, having the truncated gable-ends e e in combination with the cover, consisting of the sloping sides 11 i, horizontal strip j, and braces K, the whole secured to the top of the box or case by means of screws m m, substantially as and for the purpose described.
CARLTON NEWMAN.
