UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS B. COLIN, OF JERSEY CITY HEIGHTS, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLASP-BUTTONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,657, dated June 5, 1877; application filed April 12, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs B. OoLIN, of
Jersey City Heights, in the county of End son and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Clasp-Button, which in- -vention is fully set forth in the following speci- *ments in clasp-buttons; and consists in two hollow cases of sheet metal struck up with spurs on the lower sides, one of said cases being constructed with a slot or opening in its upper front edge, and with a flat springcatch, the free end 'of which sets in the said slot, the other casing being constructed with two down wardly-projectin g lips at the sides of its upper edge, with which the spring-catch engages, the construction and arrangement being such that the two parts or cases, when fastened together, are in contact with each other, presenting a neat and finished appearance, and enabling the spring-catch to be most readily operated, all of which will more fully hereinafter appear.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the male part of 'my clasp-button, and the letter B its female part. Each of these parts is made of ahollow case of sheet metal, from the under side of which project spurs a, which are, by preference, made in one piece with their case, and which are pointed and flexible, so that they can be readily passed through the material to which the clasp-button is to be attached, and that, by turning these spurs over after they have been passed through said material, the two parts of my button are firmly retained in position.
If desired, the spurs can be turned back, and the clasp-button can be readily detached.
The part A of my clasp'button is constructed with a rectangular slot or opening, d, in its upper front edge, and said part A also contains aflat spring-catch, b, which engages with two downwardly-projecting lips, c 0,
formed at the sides of the upper front edge of the part B, for locking the two parts together; and, by means of the free end of the spring-catch setting in the recess d of the part A, said catch can be readily operated, while at the same time the two parts A and B, when fastened together, lie in contact with each other, presenting a neat and finished appearance.
By this means a clasp-button is produced which can be made cheaply, since the two parts of the button, together with their flexible spurs, can be readily stamped out of sheet metal and bent to the proper shape by suitable dies, so that very little hand-labor is required in the construction of the article.
My button-clasp is intended particularly for fastening gloves; but it can be used also for other articles, and its two parts can be attached and detached with little trouble or loss of time, and, when attached, the spurs, being turned over on the inside, do not interfere with the convenience of the article to which they are attached.
I do not claim, broadly, as my invention the button-clasp made in two parts and provided with means for attaching and detaching the same, since button-clasps with spiral fastening devices have heretofore been made. Such button-clasp, however, could not be used with advantage for gloves and other articles which are drawn tight against the skin of the person wearing the same.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The combination of the sheet-metal casings A B struck up with spurs a a a a, the former part A being constructed with the central slot or opening at in its upper front edge, and with the flat spring-catch b, the free end of which sets in said slot, and the latter part B being constructed with the two downwardly-projecting lips c c at the sides of its upper front edge, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 9th day of April, 1877.
