TOBACCO PIPE.
No. 191,544. Patented June 5,1877.

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
NILS PETER OBERG, OF WARREN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 191,544, dated June 5, 1877; application filed May 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NiLs PETER OBERG, of Warren, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to pipes, having for its object to produce a pipe simple in construction and efficient in use, the stem of which can be readily attached and detached, shortened 0r lengthened, and easily cleaned, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal central section, of a device embodying my invention. V
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the bowl, which may be of any desired construction, and of any suitable material. The stem is in two or more partsrepresented by B, the inner portion, and O, the outer part. The part B tits "in an opening near the lower part of the bowl, and is provided near its end with a bayonet-formed slot, at, which engages with a pin or stud, b, which projects upward from the lower part of the opening in the bowl.
By this means the stem is securely and rigidly locked in the bowl, and this construction serves as a means to allow the bowl to be attached to and detached from the stem at pleasure. 0n the upper side of the stem B, and within the bowl, is a slot or opening, 0, through which the smoke is drawn. The stem B is hollow, and of suflicient size to admit the outer stem 0 and inclose the same, forming a telescopic stem. The stem 0 is provided with an opening of suflicient size, by which means, and those above described, an air or smoke passage is formed the entire length of the stem, and communicating with the inside of the bowl.
The stem 0 is inserted in the stem B from the inside, and is provided near its inner end with an enlarged head D and packing d, and the stem B is provided near its outer end with a shoulder, e, which prevents the stem 0 from being detached rom the stem B in an outward direction, while the packing makes a close-fitting joint, thus preventing the air from passing in from the outside of the stems.
The advantages of this invention are: the stem is easily fastened to the pipe; it is easily cleaned; it can be shortened; the smoke comes freely and easily, and, the pipe being easily cleaned, the smoke is without bad taste.
Having thus fully described the invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The bowl A, provided with the pin or stud b, in combination with the stem B, provided with the slot a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The bowl A, provided with the pin or stud I), in combination with the stem B, provided with the opening 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The stem 0, having enlarged head D and packing d, in combination with the stem B, provided with a shoulder, e, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The bowl A, in combination with the stem B, provided with slot at, opening 0, and shoulder 6, and the stem 0, having enlarged head D and packing d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NILS PETER OBERG.
