Description

j; NHE STATES ATENT FFICE.
HENRY FRITZ, OF CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE-STEMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,8 1 1, dated July 20, 1875; application filed July 1, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. G. FRITZ, of Chester, in the county ofDelaware and State of Pen nsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Stems and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to stems forpipes; and it consists in a double stem, or one stem within another, the exterior stem being slotted to allow free circulation of air around the interior stem, for the purpose of cooling the smoke passing through said interior stem, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I .Will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 a crosssection through line was.
A represents the bowl of a pipe, connected with the mouth-piece B by a double pipe-stem, consisting of an exterior stem, 0, and an interior stem, D. The exterior stem 0 may be made of any kind of wood or other material suitable for pipe-stems, and is similar in ap pearance to those generally in use, except that it is slotted longitudinally nearly from one end to the other. The interior stem D may be made of thin tin, German silver, or any other kind of metal or material that will cool off suddenly. It may be made flat, as shown in the drawing, or round, orany other desired shape, and inserted in the exterior stem 0.
The relative size of the two stems, and of the slot in the exterior stem, is such that there will be left sufficient space between the two stems for the air to circulate freely around the inner stem through the slot in the outer stem. By'this means the inner stem D is kept cool, thereby cooling the smoke as it passes through the same.
The great objection to short pipes especially is the great heat of the smoke as it enters the mouth. This is entirely obviated by my invention, and the smoke is cool and pleasant when it enters the mouth.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Witnesses:
