LIKE Application filed August 17,l 1932, Serialv No. 629,182, and in Great Britain September 23, 1931. A
This invention relates to that kind of device for trimming wallpaper and the like wherein a pair of cutting rollers are provided on a handle which has a guide surface adapted to act on the uncut edge ofthe wallpaper or the like. Y v
The main object of my invention is to enable a truer trimming of wallpaper or the like to be elected. Another object is to enable the trimming operation to be effected with facility whilst manipulating the roll of wallpaper in the manner which was customary when trimming withl scissors.
A device of the said kind in accordance with my invention has in addition to the guide surface which acts on the untrimmed edge of the wallpaper or the like, a guide surface which acts on the trimmed edge thereof, whereby the cutting rollers are caused with greater-certainty than hitherto to travel .along the correct path.
That guide surface which acts on the untrimmed edge preferably is rendered adjustable by adjustment screw means, whereby the setting of the width of the trimming to be removed can be effected more yaccurately than hitherto.
The said device preferably is provided with a guide member adapted to deflect the trimming downwardly as it is produced.
The guide member preferablyis arranged adjustable to suit different widths of trimmings.
The device is provided with a handle whereby it can be held with the hand in a position similar to that adopted when trimming with scissors.
I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing, Where- Figure 1 is an elevation of a trimming device regarded from one side.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the said device.
Figure 3 is an elevation thereof, regarded from the other side.
provided on a plate 7 which is attached to a handle 8 adapted to be held in a similar manner to a: pistol handle. The face 9 of the plate 7 is in a plane which contains the junction of the cutting edges of the cutting rollers 1 and` 2 and therefore forms a guide surface for the trimmed edge of the wallpaper immedi-I ately after removal of the trimming by the cutting rollers. The jaw 6 is provided with an extension 10 which forms a support for a guide 11. The guide 11 is connected to the extension 10 by means of a screw threaded spindle 12 which is rotatably mounted in lugs 13 provided on the guide 11 and screws in an internally screw threaded lug 14 provided on the extension 10, the screw threaded spindle 12 being provided with a knob 15 whereby it can be rotated. By turning the knob 15, the guide 11 is caused to be moved relative to the extension 10 in the direction of the axis of the'screw threaded spindle 12,*and because the surface 16`of the guide 11 acts on the untrimmededge to assist in guiding the device, the adjustment of the guide 11 enables trimmings of different widths to be removed.
The screw threaded spindle enables a very line and eXact ladjustment of the width of the trimming to be obtained and causes the guide 11 to lie in the adjusted position without being locked therein. The extension 10 may be provided with a guard 17 lfor the lower cutting roller 2. Y
The cranked jaw 6 is provided with a guide plate 18 and the cranked jaw 5 with a guide plate 19 whichaid the guide surface 9 in its i.
action by i maintaining the paper at the trimmed edge in register with the said guide surface.
The trimming guide 2O is provided to guide the trimming in a downward direction aft-er 'l it has been severedfrom the wallpaper or the like. The trimming guide 2O is mounted on the upper cranked jaw 5. Preferably the trimming guide 20 is arranged adjustable, for example by providing it on a rod 21 which is slidably mounted in a lug `22 provided on the jaw 5 and is adapted to be locked in position by means of a screw 23 provided on the lug 22. rllhe trimming guide 20 can thereby be adjusted in the.. same-direction as the guide 11 to cause it to act centrally on the trimming irrespective of the width of the trimming.
The cutting rollers 1 and 2 preferably are as described in my co-pending application.
In Figures 1 and 4 a portion of the wallpaper or the like is indicated by broken lines.
In operation, to commence trimming, the device is placed on the edge of the piece of wallpaper or the like until the end of the piece "ies in contact with the cutting rollers, whereupon the upper roller is rotated by the thumb and the paper is thereby drawn between the rollers and the cutting commenced.
After the upper roller has been turned suffi- .-iently to enable the end of the paper to be grasped behind the guide plate 18, the end of the piece is drawn towards the user and rolled up in the customary manner whilst the unrolled part lies on the feet of the operator. 'ihus the trimming is removed and, as can be seen from Figure 1 is guided downwards out of the way by the trimmer guide 20. Owing to the trimmed edge of the piece lying in Contact with the guide surface 9 behind the rollers, as well as the untrimmed edge lying in contact with the guide surface 16 lin advance of the rollers, the position of the cutting rollers 1 and 2 relative to the piece is positively determined and therefore Qhe rollers cut a perfectly straight cut without digging into the paper, providing the operator watches that both of the guide surfaces 9 and 16 register with the trimmed and untrimmed edges respectively of the piece. @wing to the position in which the form of the device enables it to be held, the piece can be trimmed in the well-known position and manner adopted when trimming with scissors, without the hand interfering with the movement of the paper 0r trimming. The guard 17 acts as a finger grip and thereby assists in the holding of the device firmly in the manner of a pistol by means of the handle 8, the index finger being placed round the outer side of the guard 17. The provision of the knob operated adjusting spindle 12 further conduces the accuracy of the cut by enabling the guide surface 16 to be set with great eX- actitude by merely turning the knob 15.
The trimmer guide 20 in addition to assisting in the use of the device in the hereinbefore described manner, by ensuring that the trimming falls clear of the hand, also assists in obtaining the necessary accuracy by ensuring that the trimming leaves the trimmed edge before the said trimmed edge arrives at the guide surface 9.
I claim- 1. In a device of the hereinbefore specified kind for trimming wallpaper and the like, a guide surface which acts on the untrimmed edge of the wallpaper or the like, and a guide surface which acts on the trimmed edge thereof for the purpose of causing the cutting rollers to cut with greater certainty than hitherto along the correct line.
2. In a device according to claim 1, screw means for adjustment of the guide surface which acts on the untrimmed edge of the wallpaper or the like.
3. In a device according to claim 1, a` guide member adapted to deflect downwardly the piece of trimming as it is produced.
4. In a device according to claim 1, an adj ustable guide member to deflect the piece of trimming downwardly as it is produced.
5. A device of the hereinbefore specified kind for trimming wallpaper and the like comprising a pair of cutting rollers mounted on cranked jaws connected to a handle, a guide surface for the trimmed edge, the said,v surface being situated in the same plane as the junction of the cutting edges of the cutting rollers, a guide member for the untrimmed edge connected b-y means of a screwk adjustment to a part provided on one of the said jaws and a trimming guide mounted ony one of the said jaws 1n an adjustable manner;Y
