This invention relates to an improved skiver oi that class which is used as a hand tool for shaving or splitting leather, rubber, skins and other material. More particularly my improvement is employed as a hand tool for the manufacture of straps and for shaving to produce uniform thicknesses of various kinds of material.
The primary object of my invention is to provide an assemblage of parts, the skiving elements of which are situated at one side of a pair of hand operable lever arms, whereby increased freedom of action is provided and more effective operation of the parts is attained.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool of its kind which has various adjustments whereby the parts may `be set to regulate cutting thickness and width.
Among further objects are maximum simplicity, strength and eiectiveness in construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing forming part oi this specification, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved skiver; Fig. 2 is a plan of the structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a detail portion of the skiver looking at the opposite side from that illustrated in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a plan of the cutting blade removed from the tool, and Fig. is an end view of the cutting blade shown in Fig. 4.
My improved skiver has a pair of scissor like lever members A and B which are freely fulcrumed at their intersection by the pivot bolt I0. The power ends -of these lever members are formed with a pair of handle arms II and l2, and the work end portions are formed with a forwardly extending pair of jaw members C and D.
The jaw member C which is an extension of handle member II has on its inner end portion an integral table E which extends transversely from one side of the pair of jaw members. This table is channel shape in cross section, the web portion I3 of which forms a guide and supporting surface for the material as it is being skived. The forward vertical side I4 of the table assumes substantially vertical position and functions as a guide to direct the shaving strip which is cut by the skiver downwardly away from the device when in use. The forward end portion of the jaw member C functions as a support for a cutting blade F. This cutting blade extends laterally in outstanding position parallel to the table E with its cutting edge I5 juxtaposed in cooperative parallel spaced relation adjacent thereto. The cutting blade is adjustably supported vertically on the inner side wall of the jaw member C in rela- 2 tion to the surface of the table. To this end the inner portion of the cutting blade has a fiat transverse gib I6 which is movably engaged in a vertical slot I 'I in the Work arm member C and is securely held when vertically adjusted by the binding bolt I3.
The work arm lever member D is shorter than the arm C and is formed with an integral outstanding laterally extending yoke frame G of angle reinforced cross sectional type. An antifriction gauge roller I9 is freely journaled by its ends in the yoke frame with its bearing perimeter substantially parallel and in spaced relation to the cutting edge I5 of the skiving knife blade and the surface of the table E. This bearing roller functions to hold the material evenly engaged in the bite of the cutting edge of the cutting blade as the material and the skiver tool are moved in relatively opposite directions apart.
The rearward end portions of the lever members A and B are formed with power handle arms II and I2 which when swung inwardly by hand gripping force closes the work arms C and D inwardly. When the lever arms are thus closed the material to be skived can be urged against the bite of the cutting blade, thus causing the' shaving which is cut to be directed downwardly over the guide surface I4.
By placing the table, knife blade and gauge roller in outstanding position laterally from the work arms of the lever members, increased freedom of action in the use of the skiver is produced, the manipulation of the material which is being skived being free and out of the way at one side. This is a distinct advantage.
The thickness of the split, shaving or cut is regulated by the bolt 22 which is screw threadedly engaged through the handle arm II and bears by its inner end against the shoulder 23. When adjusted the bolt is locked against turning by the lock nut 24. This adjustment regulates the relative distance between the perimeter of the gauge roller I9 and the cutting edge I5 of the knife blade. This regulated distance and the thickness of the body of the material being skived can be accurately determined by the graduated dial 25 on one side of the lever arm member B and a pointer 26 on a disk 21, which latter is keyed by pin 28 (Fig. 2) to the pivot bolt I0, which in turn is keyed at 29 to the companion lever arm member A.
A suitable guide for regulating the width of the material to be skived which is drawn through the device is provided on the inner end portion of the table E. This guide consists of a clamp 30 having a body which is gibbed in the channel of the table and held in longitudinally adjusted position along said channel on the table by the wing headed set bolt 3| (Fig. 1).
A trimmer is also provided for cutting the split or shaving from the body of the skived material automatically as the material is skived. The trimmer consists of a rotary cutting blade 32 which is freely rotatable by a suitable pivot support 33 on the outer end of the table in alignment with the shaver blade F. The cutting edge of the rotary blade 32 is substantially level with the cutting edge of the skiver blade whereby the shaving is automatically trimmed from the skived material. l
Modications are contemplated withi the spirit of the invention and the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A skiver comprising a pair of scissor-like lever arms having a pair of cooperating work arms and a pair of hand operable power arms, a laterally disposed table supported on one of said work arms having a forward edge portion, a later'- ally disposed cutting blade having a cutting edge juxtaposed to said forward edge portion of said table, said blade being supported by said table supporting Work arm, and a gauge roller rotatably supported on the companion work arm in spaced relation above the table, said table, knife blade and gauge roller being supported in outstanding position at one side of said work arm to provide unobstructed passage for the material as it is being skived.
2. In a structure as dened in claim 1, means for regulating the distance between the perimeter of the gauge roller and the cutting edge of the knife blade, and an indicator associated with said gauge for determining the thickness of the material which is skived.
3L In a lstructure as defined in claim 1, means for trimming the shaving from the material as the latter is skived.
