Be it known that I, PAUL SIMON, of Waltham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Shaving Lacing-Strips, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide a tool adapted to be held by one of the operators hands while shaving a strip of leather, such as is used for lacing together the ends of machine-belts. By shaving I mean reducing all parts of the strip to a uniform thickness by removing a skiving or shaving from its flesh side.

The invention also has for its object to provide a tool such as that above indicated with means for splitting or dividing the strip into two longitudinal parts or lacings while it is being shaved.

Theinvention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view of a strip-shaving tool embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. i represents a section on line 4: 4 of Fig. 1. Figs. 5 and 6 represent perspective views of the splitting-knife and adjustable edge-gage hereinafter referred to. t Fig. 7 represents a perspective view of the bed-lever with the splitting knife and adjustable gage removed. Fig. 8 represents a view of a portion of Fig. 7, showing the splitting-knife and gage in their inoperative positions.

The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures.

My improved tool comprises two levers a I), each formed as a handle at one end and each pivoted or hinged to the other lever at the opposite end. I have here shown the levers connected by ears 0 0, formed on the bed-lover a, and a pivot cl passing through said ears and through one end of the top lever 12.

6 represents a shaving-knife bearing on the upper surface of the bed-lever between the ears 0 c, the edges of the knife bearing against the inner sides of the ears. The knife is secured to the bed-lever by a screw f, passing through a slot g in the knife, said slot permittingalongitndinal adjustmentofthe knife to compensate for wear. A screw h, inserted in a tapped orifice in the bed-lever and having its head formed to bear against the outer end of the knife, serves to adjust the knife when the screw f is loosened.

i represents a spring-bed which yieldingly presses the strip to be shaved against the gage-roll hereinafter described. Said bed is a strip of resilient metal attached by a screw j to the bed-lever and having its free end in close proximity to and parallel with the edge of the shaving-knife.

7t represents a gage-roll which is journaled in cars formed on the top lever Z) and is arranged over the cutting edge of the shavingknife 6.

Z represents a springpresser, which is a resilient strip attached by a screw m to the top lever 17 and having its free end arranged to press on the upper side of a leather strip resting on the bed-lever.

'n represents a stop-screw which is adjustable in a tapped socket 0 on thebed-lever and cooperates with a complemental stop member or boss p, formed on the top lever, in limiting the movement of the gage-roll it to ward the shaving-knife.

(1 represents a fixed edge-gage formed on the bed-lever a and located at one end of the shaving-knife. One edge of the strip being shaved bears against the gage g and is guided thereby. If it is desired to provide a guide for the other edge of said strip, a stud r, located in a recess 8 in the bed-lever, is turned to cause a gage-finger Z, formed on one of its ends, to project above the bed-lever, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. et, said gage-finger when not in use being located in a recess formed in one side of the bed-lever, as shown in Figs. 1 and 7. The stud r may be moved endwise in the recess 3 to locate the gage-finger t at any desired distance from. the fixed gage q and may be positively held at any desired position by a set-screw a, which cooperates with a circular socket v at one end of the recess 8 in firmly holding the stud.

The knife to may be used for either trimming one edge of a single strip or for slitting a strip into two strips of equal width.

The device is operated by passing one end of a leather strip between the ears 0 a while the top lever is raised and then depressing ,the top lever as far as the stops it p. will permit and then pulling the strip between the two levers by one hand, the levers being at If deduring the operation, its side being formed to bear on the jaws of the vise.

Myinvention is not limited to a tool adapted to shave lacing-strips only, and it may be of suitable Width to shave pieces of leather for belting and other purposes. If desired, the tool may be made of a size sufficient for shaving strips an inch and a half wide, more or less.

I claim- 1. An appliance of the character specified, comprising two levers each formed as a handie at one end and hinged to the other lever at the opposite end, one lever having a shavin g-knife and the other a gage-roll, an adj ostable stop member carried by one of the levers and a complemental stop member carried by the other lever, for varying the space between the knife and the gage-roll.

2. An appliance of the character specified, comprising a bed-lever having a shavingknife, a fixed edge-gage at one end of the knife, an adjustable edge-gage movable toward and from the fixed edge-gage, means for securing the adjustable gage inany position to which it may be adjusted, and a top lever hinged to the bed-lever and having a gage-roll.

3. An appliance of the character specified, comprising a bed-lever having a shavingknife, a fixed edge-gage at one end of the shaving-knife, a slitting-knife adjustably secured to the bed and movable toward and from the edge-gage, and means for positively securing the slitting-knife in any position to which it may be adjusted.

4. An appliance of the character specified, comprising a bed-lever having a shavingknife, a fixed edge-gage at one end of the shaving-knife, a transverse recess formed in the upper face of the lever, a socket at one end of said recess, a stud adapted to be rotated and moved endwise in said recess and socket, a slitting-knife affixed to said stud, and means for securing the stud and slittingknife in any position to which they may be adjusted.

5. An appliance of the character specified, comprising a bed-lever having at one end ears or lugs projecting from its upper surface and separated by a strip-outlet passage, a shaving-knife bearing on the bed-lever between said ears, its edges bearing on the ears, means for adjusting the knife longitudinally to compensate for wear, and a top lever hinged to the ears of the bed-lever and provided with a gage-roll.

6. An appliance of the character specified, comprising a bed-lever having a skivingknife, and a top lever hinged to the bed-lever and having a gage-roll located over the cutting edge of the knife, and a spring-presser supported by the top lever and adapted to bear yieldingly on a strip supported by the bed-lever.
