IMPROVEMENT IN HATS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 191,061, dated May 22, 1877; application filed March 21, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY KUHLMAN, of Boston, of the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hats; and do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2 a side view, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of a hat having my improvement.

Such improvement is specially intended for water-proof hats usually termed Cape Ann hats, as used by mariners, such being of the general form, as shown in the drawings, and made of cloth, covered with paint or awaterproof composition.

- The object of the invention is to strengthen the brim of the hat and enable it to be readily turned up in front or in rear, or entirely around it, as occasion may require.

This I accomplish by making the brim A with a short vertical rise or ofl'set in it, as shown at a, such rise or offset carried either partially or entirely around the brim, between its upper and lower edges, and parallel, or

about so, to the upper of them. In this style of mariners hat the brim is much wider in rear than it is in the front part of it, the rear part being to shield the neck of the wearer from rain, snow, or wind.

Instead of running the rows of stitching of the brim around in it lengthwise of it, and

parallel with its upper edge, I run them so-as to extend crosswise of the brim and across the offset thereof, such rows being shown at c o. By extending across the offset they strengthen the brim, so as to prevent it from there being broken or torn away.

The offset, by stiffening the brim at the lower part of the portion of it, which is above the offset, enables thepart below the ofl'set to be easily bent up at the offset, and causes it to maintain its position to good advantage. The object of so turning up the brim in the front part of it is to enable the wearer of the hat to see upward to better advantage. The turning of the brim up at the back or sides, or all around it, is to render the hat cooler or more comfortable than it will be when the brim is down. The crown of the hat is domeshaped.

I claim- 1. As an improved manufacture, a waterproof hat, as described, having the offset or rise a arranged or formed in its brim, such being substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. A hat formed with an offset or rise, a, in its brim A, and with rows 0 of stitching arranged in such brim to cross the said offset, all substantially as explained.
