DISPLAY PAD FOR WRIST WATCH BOXES Filed May 4, 1932 Patented May 16, 1933 n UNITED; STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN M. SHIELDS,
DISPLAY PAD FOR WRIST WATCH BOXES Application filed kMay 4, 1932. Serial No. 609,092.
My invention relates to small boxes, usually more or less ornamental in design and finish, which are used as containers for the reception and display of wrist watches equipped with a band of leather, or similar material, and more particularly relates to the display pad member of the article. Display pads for suoli boxes are well known m which the watch is displayed vcentrallyof the face of thepad and in which the strap members extend laterally around the opposite ends of the pad and are buckled, or
otherwise secured together, usually rather tightly, on the under side of the pad, but it hasbeen found by experiencethat when a wrist watchand strap remains on display on such a pad for a considerable time, the leather strap members receivea somewhat permanent set at thevbends where they extend around the ends ofthe pad, and this has proved objectionable. my invention is to provide a display pad of such construction that there is no necessity for buckling the strap ends together, conducing `to the defect mentioned, another is to produce a pad of siglitly appearancedisplaying only the watch (or other article) and short strap sections only on each side thereof; and other objects are the attainment of these advantages by a simple and desirable arrangement of separable members of a display pad structure of composite twopart construction.
Vith these objects and advantages in view, I have designed and invented the display pad for a wrist watch box hereinafter described in detail, the essential elements ofmy invention being more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure l of the drawing is a perspective of a box with the lid raised, showing a display pad therein embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the upper member of the pad;
Fig. 3 is a perspective of the lower pad member;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central `vertical section of the box, the contained wristy watch and strap being shown in elevation; and
One' object of OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AssIGNOR To En. NOBLE a COMPANY', or g; CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,4 A CORPORATION or` ILLINOIS Fig. 5 isa top plan vkview of a modified form of `my invention.
Like reference characters indicate like parts on all the gures of the drawing.V
It will be understood that the box body alid lid or cover member 2 may be of any desired or suitable construction adapted to receive the display pad to which my invention particularly relates. This pad is of double or two-part construction, and inf` cludes abottom section 3 and an upper, display section 4, both formed of sheet metal and covered with ornamental facings to provide` a finished appearance. The display field vformed bythe top of the upper-display .sectionL of the pad, in the present in-r stance, though iiot necessarily, comprises a broad forwardly and downwardly sloping trapezoidal face G, a narrower rear trapezoidal face 7, and triangular end faces 8 and 9, allconnected to a marginalrectangular downwardly extending flange 10. The bottom'section Sis -provided at its ends with upwardly extending curved tongues 11 which matcli with and are approximately complei mentary to inwardly extending notches 12 formed in the ends of the upper member, the proportions being such that a slight strapreceiving gap is provided betweenthe end of each tongue l1 and the proximate edge of the notch which receives it. The bottom section is also provided `with tongues 13 'arranged to frictioiially engage the flange 10 of the upper member of the pad. The outer face of each tongue 11 of the lower section is covered with a facing 14 of an ornamental material, such as plush or velvet, which preferably, and as illustrated, extends around the edgesto the opposite inner face, and the display ield of the lower-section 4 and outei edges of the flange l0 are covered with the same material, marked 15, so that when the partsare assembled as shown rin Fig. l, with lee the watch disposed on the forward face 6 Y of the upper member, and the strap ends extending downwardly through the gaps at the ends of the notches 12, the upper faces of the pad, or'display field, Will present a *continuous appearance.A If desired,andas illustrated, the upper side of the bottom section 3 may be finished with a facing of paper or fabric 16, and the lower side of the section 4 with a similar facing 17, concealing the raw edges of the facing material 14 or 15.
It will be observed that the gaps or strapreceiving opening between the ends of the tongues 11 and the bottoms of the notches 12 permit the perforated and buckle-carrying strap members marked 18 and 19 respectively, of the watch to pass therethrough somewhat loosely and without constraint into the space below the pad, and that it is unnecessary to buckle the strap and draw it more or less tightly upon the pad member. It will beY noticed, also, that only comparatively short sections of the strap on opposite sides of the watch are displayed, the frame or field of the facing material of the pad eX- tending entirely around the watch and visible portions of the strap members, thus presenting a unique and pleasing appearance.
In Fig. 5 I have illustrated a modification of Imy invention in which one end only of the upper section of the display pad, marked t, is formed with a notch, marked 12a, and a single tongue 11a is formed on the bottom section 3, an orifice or strap* receiving opening marked 20, being formed opposite the gap at the end of the notch 12n to receive the perforated strap member of the watch. This permits the perforated strap end to be threaded through the orifice 20, while the strap member equipped with the buckle is carried into the notch 121L whilst the upper and lowerl members are separated, the parts of the pad being then assembled as in the form of my invention hereinbefore described.
Whilemy invention is particularly suited for use in the construction of small ornamental boXes intended for the display and safe-keeping of wrist watches, it may be similarly employed in connection withthe display of other articles provided with strap members, as certain kinds of emblems, badges, lockets, garters, arm-bands, etc., and
I desire the appended claims construed to y cover such uses and all mechanical equivalents for the elements specifically recited.
I claim:
1. In a container for wrist watches and the like, a display pad comprising an upper section having a display field, said section being formed at at least one end with an inwardly-extending notch, and a lower sec tion provided with an upwardly extending end tongue matching said notch and providing between the ends of the tongue and notch a strap-receiving gap.
2. In a container for wrist watches and the like, a display pad comprising an upper section having a, display field, said section being formed at its opposite ends with inwardly-extending notches, and a lower section provided at its opposite ends with tongues matching said notches and providing between the ends of the tongues and corresponding notches a pair of strapre ceiving gaps.
3. In a container for wrist watches and the like, a display pad comprising an upper section having a display field, said section being formed at one end with. an inwardly extending notch and acent the other end being lformed with a strap-receiving orifice, and a lower section provided with a tongue matching said notch and providing between the ends of the tongue and notch a strap receiving gap. Y
L1. In a container 'for wrist watches and the like, a display pad comprising separable upper and lower sections, said upper section having a display field and being formed with a marginal depending flange and a notch extending from at least one end inwardly through said flange towards the center of said display field, and said lower section being detachably connected to said upper section adjacent the lower edge of said flange and being formed with an upwardly extending end tongue matching said notch and providing between the ends of the tongue and notch a strap-receiving gap.
5. A display pad for wrist watch containers according to claim 4L in which the eX- posed faces of upper and lower sections are provided with like ornamental facings, whereby a continuous display field is provided surrounding a displayed wrist watch and visible portions of the strap members thereof.
6. In a container for wrist watches and the like, a displayY pad comprising separable upper and lower sections, said upper section having a display field and being formed with a depending marginal iiange and at its opposite ends formed with notches extending inwardly through said flange towards the center of said display field, and said lower section. being detachably connected to said upper section adjacent the lower edge of said ange and being formed with a pair of opposite upwardly extending,
inwardly bent end tongues severally matching said notches of the upper section and providing strap-receiving gaps at opposite sides of the center of said display field.
In testimony whereof, l have subscribed my name.
JOHN M. SI-IIELDS.
