WALDEMAR BREAST WATCH. APPLICATION FILED 0:0.13, 1920.
1,431,802. Patented Oct. 10, 1922.
V v IN ENTOR v has for its object to provide novel means for Patented Oct. 10, 1922.
UNITED STATES? PATENT OFFICE.
WALDEMAR BREAST Warren.
Application filed December 13, 1920 Serial No. 430,324.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER HORVATH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Farrell, in the county of Mercer and State of Penniylvania, have invented a new and useful mprovement in Waldemar Breast lVatches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion thereof.
. y invention relates to watches, and it wearing a watch, so that thewatch shall be inconvenient position to. be, consulted and 4 the whole device shall present the appear ance of the well known Waldemar watch chain or ribbon. 1
It is very common to carry a watch in th breast pocket, attached to the end of a chain which extends across the waistcoat of the wearer, the other end of the chain being attached to a suitable object carried in the opposite pocket. Such a chain is known as a. Waldemar chain. The chain is often replaced by a ribbon and in this case it is customary to provide the ribbon with a suitably engraved buckled or other ornament that is carried at the middle of the ribbon.
According to my present invention, I attach the watch to a plate or case having the general appearance of the buckle or ornament mentioned above, and I provide this plate or case with ribbons, chains or the like, extending to the two breast pockets of the wearer, the ends of the ribbons being held in place by means of suitable clasps which slide over the upper edges of the wearers breast pockets. The watch thus presents the appearance of an ordinary Waldemar breast chain or ribbon, but the watch itself is in a convenient position to be consulted by merely tilting the plate or case to bring the face of the watch into view.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a front view of one form ofmy device including the watch, ribbons and clasps; Fig. 2 is a top view of the same device; Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the clasps; Fig. 41 is a front View of another form of my device; Fig. 5 is a rear View of the watch shown in Fi g. 4-; Fig. 6 is a top view of the watch shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and Fig. 7 is a rear perspective view of one form of my invention, showing the watch-exposing opening.
As shown in F igs.1 and 2, the watch movement is contained in a case 2 which, as shown, has one flat side 3 which receives the bezel 4 of the watch and has a curved outer side 5 which may be engraved with a suitable monogram, name, emblem or the like, or ornamented with jewels or otherwise, as may be desired. The top of the case 2 may be provided with an opening to receive the winding stem of the watch, in which case the crown 6 projects slightly above the case. The crown may be concealed behind the case if'desired, as by )ivoting the watch case to the buckle instea of enclosing it completely as shown.
At the ends of the case 2 are fiat rings 7'to which are attached the ends of'ribbons 8, to the outer ends of which are secured clasps 9 having flat rings 10 corresponding to the rings 7 for attachin the ribbons. The clasps 9, as shown in I ig. 3, consistof front andrear fingers 9* pivoted together at 11 and provided with a suitable spring 12. The
case2 may contain the watch movement,
like 'an'ordinary watch case or'it may be a container, in addition to the usual watch case, for receiving a watch with its case.
The form of device shown in Figs. 4 and 6 differs from that described above in that the watch 14, instead of being enclosed within the case 2, is attached to the rear side of a plate 15, the front of which may be engraved or ornamented in any desired manner. As shown, the watch 14 is held in a ring 16 soldered or otherwise secured to the back of the fiat plate 15. This plate is also provided with flat rings 17 for attaching the ribbons 18, the rings 17 being attached to the back of the plate some distance from its ends. The ribbon may, if desired, be provided with adjusting clips 20 and are secured to clasps .21 similar to the clasps 9 described above.
Fig. 7 shows the rear surface of the device of Figs. 1 and 2 modified by attaching the ribbons to the flat surface 3 by means of links 17 in themanner shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
In use, the clasps 9 are secured to the top edges of the wearers breast pockets with the v ing the watch and theclasps. Numerous other ch'angesinay be made in-the form and "means" of chains in the nature of bracelet chains having pins in their end links intended tobe 'iorcedinto the clothing. Also, 1" am aware that various pockets, holders and the like have'beenprovidedfor holding watches in a"convenient position to 'be consuited by tiltingthe pocket or holder. 1 do "'not claim suchari'angeInents these, but I do cl'aini as my "invention As a new article of jewelry, a watch" container having a fiat side provided with said fiat side, and flexible members connected' to fsaid container and provided at their ends with claspsa'dapted to slip over "the upper edges of the wearers breast pockets "andQto thereby suspend the said "Watch containerbetween the said pockets. 2. As anew article of jewelry a watch container having a flat side adapted to rest against the Wearers breast, thesaidfiat side being provided with an opening to expose the face of the watch, and ribbons connected to the flat side of said container and provided at their ends with clasps adapted to slip over the upper edges of the Wearers 'breast-p'ockets-and to thereby suspend the said watch container between the said pockets.
8. As a new article of jewelry, awatch "container having aflat side adaptedto rest against the wearers breast and a curved side opposite to saidflat "side; the said fiat side being provided with an opening to expose the face of the watch,"linkscarried by the fiat side of said nearfLopposite edges thereof, and ribbons connected to said linksand provided at their outerends with Clasps adapted to slip over theupper p edges o'f thewearers breast pockets and to an opening to expose theiac'e' of the watch and also having a curved'side opposite to thereby suspend the said: container between the'said' pockets.
' In testinionyavhereof; the said ALEX- ANDER HORVATI-I have hereunto set myhand.
ALEXANDER HOBVATH.
