BY Cm w ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 25, 1933 UNITED STATES- CHARLES KILLER, LONG ISLAND CITY, YORK IAS'IINEB IOR HAND-BAGS Application filed November 88, 1931. Serial No. 576,906.
The present invention relates to ladies handbags, pocketbooks, and the like.
Themain ob'ect of the invention is to provide a ladys andbag or pocketbook w'th means for carrying one or more small articles, such as a pencil, fountain pen, lipstick, or similar articles, in position externally of the bag where it is readily available for use without opening the bag.
Another object of the invention is to provide a closure fastener device for a ladys handbag or the like, said device being so constructed and arranged that it constitutes a container for one or more of the above mentioned articles.
Another object of the invention is to provide a closure fastener. device for a ladys handbag or the like, constructed and arranged to releasably hold a pen, a pencil, or an article of s'milar configuration, to facilitate actuation of the fastener device, said article being readily removable so that it can be applied to its normal use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ladys handbag or the like with a frame having a compartment to which access may be had externally of the bag.
A further object of the invent'on is the provision of a closure fastener device of novel and pleasing appearance.
A yet further object of the invention is generally to improve the construction of ladies handbags, pocketbooks and the like, and closure fasteners therefor.
In the drawings accompanying the present application I have shown several embodi- Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, on an enlarged scale, showing the bag frame sections disengaged.
Fig. 5 s a fragmentary side view of a bag showing a modified construction.
Fig. 5a is a section on the line 5a)-5a of Fig. 5.
Figs. 6 to 9 are fragmentary side views, each figure showing a different modification of the invention.
As shown in Fig. 1, the bag may be of a well known construction and comprises a bag frame 10 having hinged frame sections -11 and 12, shown more clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. A closure fastener device or clasp is associated with the bag frame 10 and comprises an elongated operating member 13 which extends longitudinally thereof. As shown in Fig. 2 said operating member 13 constitutes a container for a small article 14, such as a pencil, fountain pen or lipstick, and is provided with a removable closure 15 to afford convenient access to said article. The clasp also comprises a metal plate 16 secured to opcrating member 13 in any suitable way, as by screws 17. A spring metal plate 18 overlies the plate 16 and is provided with depending reflexed extensions forming eyelets 20. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the operating member 13 has a recess in its lower portion within which the plates 16 and 18 are positioned. A metal plate 21 is secured within the frame section 11 and is provided with recesses 22, within which said eyelets 20 are positioned, and with eyelets 23 in alinement with the eyelets 20 of the plate 18, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2. A flat spring-steel bar 24 extends through the eyelets 20 and 23, thereby securing the clasp 13 to the plate 21 and acting as a spring biasing the clasp to bag-locking position. The frame section 12 is provided with a catch 25 which is adapted toproject into the clasp 13, which for this purpose is provided with alined openings 26 in the plates 16 and 17, as shown more clearly in Fig. 4. To release the catch 25 or to disengage the clasp from the frame section 12, in order to open the bag, said operating member 13 is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3, this movement being permitted by the connection constituted by the spring-steel bar 24 and eyelets 20 and 23.
The construction shown in Fig. 5 is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to'4, except that the operating member 13a comprises an elongated helical spring open at at least one end thereof for the insertion of the article 14a. One or more spring clips 27 are secured within the helical spring 13a to releasably hold the article 14a within the container or compartment thus provided.
The constructions shown in Figs. 6 to 8, inclusive, are also the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 4, except with respect to the containerfor the article. As shown in Fig. 6, theclasp comprises a container 13?) having a lid 28 secured to the container by spring hinges 29 which bias the lid to closed position, the lid being shown open against the tension of the spring hinges 29. As shown in Fig. 7, the container comprises spring clips 30 within which a small article such as a pencil 140 may be removably secured. As shown in Fig. 8 the container 13d is generally similar to the container shown in Fig. 1 and additionally is provided with a flat top surface 31 for holding a lipstick container 32, said container 13d being provided with spring clips 33 to engage said lipstick container 32.
It will be observed that in the embodiments shown in.Figs. 5 and 7, the articles 14a and 14b, facilitate actuation of the clasps and that said articles, which are complete articles of manufacture in themselves, may be removed so that they can be applied to their normal uses. The bag shown in Figs. 9 comprises a bag frame 34 having hinged frame sections, as in the conventional bag frame construction, said frame sections being provided with conventional clasp members 35 and 36-. According to the present invention one or both of the hinged frame sections are provided with compartments 37 at one or both ends thereof within which a small article, here shown as a pencil 38, may be contained. Said compartments 37 are accessible externally of the bag and for this purpose removable closures 39 are provided as shown.
Thus, the several objects of the invention are attained in the bag constructions shown Moreover, in View of the present disclosure other constructi ns embodying the present invention will eadily suggest themselves. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the constructions disclosed except as may be required by the appended claims and the prior art.
