GILES o. FULLMER, or narnonron'rj fooNNEo'rIoUr, ASSIGNOR TO THE BRIDGEPORT METAL GOODS MANUFACTURING. COMPANY; or BRIDGEPORT, oonnnc'rronr. A
CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT HOLDER FOR COSMETICS AND- THE LIKE Application filed May 7, 1931. Serial No. 535,627.
This invention relates to new and" useful improvements in holders for cosmeticsv and the like such as lipstick, soap, etc., of the type including a receptacle or casing, a carrier for the cosmetic movable in the casing, and means to'operate the carrier to project the cosmetic for use and then withdraw it into thereceptacle. g I
An object of the invention is to provide a cosmetic holder including an open ended receptacle or casing,- a carrier movable in the receptacle or casing, and adapted to receive a cosmetic, and a lazy tong means to move the carrier toward and from the open end of the receptacle to project the cosmetic for use and after use to withdraw it into the receptacle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cosmetic holderincluding an open ended receptacle, acosmetic carrier shiftable in the receptacle, a cover for the receptacle, and a folding means operable by the cover as the latter is moved to open and closed positions to shift the carrier to project the cosmetic for use and after use withdraw it into the receptacle. Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein a satisfactory embodiment of the invention is shown. It is to be'understood however, that the invention is not limited to the details dis.- closed but includes all such variations and modifications as fall-within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims to which claims reference is to be had for a definition of the invention.
' In the drawing: g
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the improved cosmetic holder, the cover being shown closed in full lines and completely open in dotted lines; 1
Fig. 2 is an edge elevational view'of the cosmetic holder, the cover being in closed position; I
Fig. 3 is a-vertical longitudinal sectional view. of the holder in closed position; T
Fig; 4 is a somewhat similar view, the holder being open and the cosmetic being proj ected as for use;
Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 4; and
Fig; 6 is a detail view showing one end of one of the arms of the'cover.
Referring in detail to the drawing, a cosmetic holder of the present invention includes an elongated receptacle or casing 10' open at its upper end and here shown as substantially rectangular intransverse cross section. The upper end of the receptacleor casing is normally closed by a cover 11 including arms 12 disposed one at each side of the receptacle 10. At their lower ends one or both'of the arms 12 are provided with. square openings 13 adapted to receive a squared shaft 14 whereby the arms are not turnable on the shaft and whereby movement of the arms will result in movement of the shaft.
Within the receptacle 10 is a cosmetic carrier 15 into which may be inserted one end 15'is preferably also substantially rectangular in transverse section whereby the carrier will have but limited play in the receptacle but will be capable of movement in directions longitudinally of the receptacle. That isthe carrier is adapted to be moved toward the open end of the receptacle to project the cosmetic 16 for use and toward the closed end of the receptacle to withdraw the cosmetic into the receptacle after the cosmetic has been used. e As clearly shown 1 the shaft 14 extends through the side walls ofthe receptacle 10 and has its ends headed over as at 17 against the outer surfaces of the arms 12. Connected with this shaft to be operated by turning movement thereof and also connected with the carrier15 to move the carrieris-ala'zy tong means 18. To provide a connection between the lazy tong 18 and the receptacle 15 the bottom wall of the receptacle is slotted as at 19 and is centrally depressed to receive a transversely extending pin 20 on which the upper links 21 of the lazy tong have their ad,- j acent ends pivoted.
The lower links 22 of the lazy tong have their adjacent ends anchored on the shaft 18 and the opening through these links is'of such diameter thatthey are free to turn on the shaft. Mounted on the shaft to turn therewith is an arm 23 to the outer end of which is pivoted, as at 24, a link 25 the upper end of which is pivotally connected with a link 26 of the lazy tong as by means of a pin 27 forming the central pivotal connection between two links 26 and 30 of the lazy tongs. Disposed on the shaft 14 between the links 22 and the arm 23 is a spacing collar 28 and if desired a somewhat similar collar may be provided on the pin 27 between the links 25 and 26.
Since the arms 12 of the cover 11 are connected with the shaft 14 so as to move the shaft or move with the shaft it will be clear that any movement of the cover will bring about a corresponding movement of the shaft and that as the shaft is turned it will act through arm 23 and link 25 either to extend or to fold the lazy tongs, depending on the direction of the turning movement. The cover is swung from a position closing the open end of the receptacle in a direction laterally of the receptacle and of course about the shaft 14 as an axis. This is as suggested in Fig. 4 and in Fig. 1 the dotted lines show the cover in its extreme position. Thus if the cover is swung to the left as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3 it will turn shaft 14 counter clockwise and swing arm 23 toward the left which will move pivot 24 upwardly and therefore extend the lazy tongs to shift carrier 15 and the cosmetic stick 16 upwardly to project it from the open end of the casing for use.
As the cover is swung to open position it rotates the shaft 14 and the shaft acting through arm 23 and link 25 opens or extends the lazy tong 18 so as to move the carrier 15 and the cosmetic toward the open end of the receptacle to project the cosmetic for use. On movement of the cover 11 toward closed position the shaft 14 will be rotated in the opposite direction and the shaft acting through the arm 23 and link 25 will close or collapse the lazy tong 18 so as to move the carrier downwardly or inwardly of the receptacle to withdraw the cosmetic into the receptacle. The normal position of the cover 11 is as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 where the cover is disposed over the open end of the receptacle in a position to close said end and protect the cosmetic.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a cosmetic holder which is relatively simple in construction and includes buta few parts which parts may be easily made and assembled to provide the complete device. The arms 12 of the cover may be cut out somewhat in accordance with the pat.- tern shown in the drawing or other designs may be used or the arms may be solid. Further, when the cover is in the extreme open position as suggested by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 a handle is provided for the receptacle. In use to project or withdraw the cosmetic it is but necessary to operate the cover either from or toward closed position.
Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a cosmetic holder, an open ended receptacle, a carrier in the receptacle and adapted to receive a cosmetic, said carrier shiftable toward the open end of the receptacle to project the cosmetic for use and away from the open end of the receptacle to Withdraw the cosmetic into the receptacle after use, a lazy tong means within the receptacle to shift the carrier, and means on the outside of the receptacle to operate the lazy tong means to shift the'carrier, said last means including a cover for the open end of the receptacle.
