The object of my invention is to provide non-printing means in a web perfecting rotary printingpress, for exerting a uniform blotting pressure on the non-perfected web throughout its printedportion, whereby the appearance of the printed portion on the first printed side of the web will be improved by the elimination of the variation in tone so prevalent where the printed matter on the first printed side of the web does not coincide with the printed matter on the second printed or perfected side of the web. This is particularly advantageous Where pictures are the impression or printed matter on the second printed side of the web is subjected to blotting pressure by the form cylinders of the second printing unit which causes the said portion to offset to a greater extent and thus present a lighter and duller tone than where no pressure has been applied. This non-uniform pressure produces different shades in the impression on the first printed side of the web and the uniformity of the impression is therefore destroyed.
This variation in tone in the impression on the first printed side of the web is caused by the ofiset web on the impression cylinder of the second printing unit taking off more ink from the first printed side of the web where pressure is applied thereto by the form cylinders of the second printing unit. I
To eliminate this variation in tone on the first printed side of the web due to this offsetting and to ensure a uniform tone and color in the impression on the first printed side of the web, I have provided an auxiliary pressure means which coacts in the present instance with the impression cylinder of the second printing unit before the web passes to the form cylinders of that unit for perfect- 1931. The means which I have shown for exertingblotting pressure upon the desired portion or portions of the non-perfected web against the olfset'web 12 before the web is perfected by the form cylinders 8,9, 10,11, ,7 comprises a cylinder 13 mounted in position to engage the non-perfected web as it passes around'the impression cylinder 7 of the second printing unit over the offset web 12 and before the non-perfected web is engaged by the form cylinders of the second printing unit. i I
This pressure cylinder 13 is used to exert pressure upon the entire non-perfected Web or upon any desired portion thereof by building up the face of the cylinder withany suitable material asmetal, paper, etc. In the present instance the face of the pressure cylinder 13 is built up as shown at 14, to exert blotting pressure upon the non-perfected web at those points which will not receive pressure from the form rollers S, 9, 10, 11 when perfecting the web. t a The form cylinders 2, 3, 4, 5 of the first printing unit may be positively driven from theimpression cylinder gear 15 through the gears 16, 17, 18 and. 19 respectively. .form cylinders 8, 9, 10, 11 of the second printing unit may be positively driven from the impression cylinder gear 20. through the gears 21, 22, 23 and 24 respectively, The blotting pressure cylinder 13 may also be positively driven from the impression cylinder gear 20 through the gear 25. Theimpression cylinder gears Y15 and 20 of the two printing units may be driven in unison through the gears26, 27, bevel gears 28, 29, shaft 30, bevel gears 31, 32 and gears 33, 34:. .Fromthe above description it will be seen that I have provided non-printing means whereby the impression on the first printed side ofthe web may be subjected to blotting pressure in whole or in part, as the case may be, to obtain a uniform tone and-color which is so much tobedesired in web perfecting work.
