This invention'relates to quilting frames and more particularly to such frames of the knockdown type; and in accordance with the present invention the frame will be found useful for a number ofother purposes the making of rugs; embroidering and the like.

stood from a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

Each frame member 9 is preferably rectangular or non-circular in cross sectlon and at each end 1s reduced as at 9a. .A sleeve 10 is secured to each reduced'end 9a by pins or the like 11. Each sleeve 10 has a free end that is contracted and integral with the con tracted end is a ratchet wheel 12. When the work frame is assembled the reduced end 10a of the sleeve fits into the slot 8 as suggested in Figure 2.

. Each frame member 7 is provided adjacent each slot 8 with a pivoted pawl 13 to engage i a proximate ratchet 12 as shownin Figure 1.

The uprights 5 are provided with vertical sockets 14 elongated longitudinally; and the end members 7 are provided with dependmg adjusting bars 15 slidably engaging the sockets 14. The bars 15 are provided with verticallyspaced apertures 16 and pins 17 are adapted to engage selected apertures 16 at the upper ends of the uprights 7 whereby to secure the adjusting bars 15 at the desired vertical adjustment.

Each adjusting bar 15. is braced relative to its frame bar 7 through the medium of-a pair of brace rods 18' the ends of which'connectedwith the'bar 15 operate in oppositely disposed slots 19 provided in the upright 5'.

Each frame member 7 on its inner side has tacked or otherwise secured thereto as at 20 ,onee'dge portion of a fabric sheet 21 to which maybe pinned the ends of a quilt'or the llke. The sheets 21 are of some strong fabric such as canvas.

As is thought well known, in actual prac ties, the quilt is secured in any suitablemanner to one of the rolls'or side members 9v and is rolled aboutthe other of therollers or side members for holding the material'o'r quilt stretched between the rollers orside members V 9, and the. pawls 13 engaging the ratchet wheels 12 retain the rollers or frame members 9' against retrogrademovement. Manifestly the quilt being also pinned to the sheets 21 will be stretched and held tautin a directiontra'nsversely of the stretching action of I the rollers orside frame members 9. It will also be apparent that the work supporting frame'embodying the elements 7 and j V 9 may be readily adjusted vertically, and

secured at the desired adjustment Without disturbing the quilt.

Even though I'havehereinshown and de-' scribed the preferred embodiment of the invention, it .is to be understood that the same is susceptible of further changes,"modifications' and improvements coming within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my. invention, what I claim as new is: 1

A quilting frame comprising a pair of uprights each provided with a socket elongatedlongitudinally, and also having oppo- I V sitely disposed slots providing lateral openingsfor said socket, an adjusting bar for each upright and slidably engaging the socket of I I saidupright, means for securing each ad justing bar at the desired vertical adjustment relative to its upright, a frame member mounted on the upper end of each adjusting bar, rods bracing each frame member relative toits adjusting bar and operating insa d slots, and rollers rotatably mounted between V said frame members. 1
