Classes 52(ii). 52(iii) and 52(iv) Means for securing the ends of a length of canvas or like hammock surface to a cross-member comprises passing a bight 14 of the canvas &c. 11 through a slot 13 of an outer member 10, and passing an inner member 15 into the bight so that when tension is applied to the canvas length the inner member 15 together with the bight 14 is drawn against the slot 13 so gripping the canvas length between the inner member and the edges of the slot. The outer member 10 may have transverse apertures at its ends to take over spigots on the support so preventing rotation of the crossmember. When it is desired to adjust the length of canvas the cross-member is removed from the support, the canvas rolled on the cross-member to the desired extent and the cross-member replaced in position on the support. Fig. 10 shows an alternative form the inner member 40 being provided with the apertures 41 to engage the support and the outer tube comprising a split spring tube 42 adapted to grip the edges of the bight 14 against the inner tube 40. Various articles of furniture may be formed employing a canvas length secured in the manner described. Figs. 7 and 8 show respectively a hammock and a chair comprising detachable members 20 secured as by bent sleeves 21 and by transverse rods 24 having wing nuts 25, Fig. 8, showing a chair having one or more pairs of struts 26 in addition. A cushion may be secured in any positon on the canvas surface by inserting an edge of the cushion in a bight formed in the desired position on the canvas and gripping the edges of the bight and the cushion by means of a clip such as a slotted strip or a pair of rods secured together at their ends.
