Description

Nov. 8, 1932. G. FUNTERMANN RAZOR KIT Filed June l5, 1931 NVENTOR //J ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 8, 1932 f nuire GERHARD FLINTER-MANN; OF TEST ORLNGE, NEW JERSEY RAZOR KIT Application iled .Tune 15,
Thisinvention relates to shaving or toilet kits and more particularly concerns an assembly of this kindadapted to carry a safety razor and the usual shaving and toiletac- 5 cessories.
It is desirable, particularly when traveling, to carry a safety razor and the usual shaving and other toilet accessories in a single container or kit. `Known toilet kits of this type are not convenient to pack in a limi-ted space because of their bulk and are further unsatisfactory in that the cutting edges of the razor blade are usually unprotected and so likely to i come into contact with and injure other articles in the kit and to become dulled by such contact.
It is an object of the present invention to provide anfextremely compact unitary shaving and toilet kit for use primarily in travel- 33 ing. More specifically, the invention contemplates the provision of a unita-ry kit including means for enclosing and protecting the head and the cutting edges of the blade of 'A a safety razor, 'together with one or more conf tainers for enclosing various shaving or toilet accessories arranged to lock or secure the razor head within the protective means, and to lie substantially parallel to the razor handle when-in such locking position.
Various other objects and characteristic features of the invention will become apparent as the description thereof progresses.
The toilet kit of the present invention 1s I designed to carry a razor of the `type having l a shaving head :with a handle secured thereto and extending substantially at right angles therefrom. My improved kit comprises essentially a srotective housing or shield for the razor head, such housing having an openluf 1 'r' ing m one suie thereof through which the head may be inserted or withdrawn, together with one or more containers for shaving or toilet accessories movably attached to the w housing and acting when in the closed posi- "Q tion to close the opening in the housing and so lock or secure the razor head therein. In a preferred form vof the invention, the containers are hingedly secured to opposite sides 'of n the housing and arranged to swing in opposite directions to uncover the opening, the two 1931. Serial No. 544,364.
containers acting when in the closed position to respectively cover the parts of the housing opening on opposite sides of the razor handle which extends therefrom. It is usually preferred to provide a separate compartment in the housing` for carrying extra razor blades or other accessories.L
rlhe invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of my improved razor kit have been illustrated. In the drawins;
Figure l is an elevation of one modification of my improved kit;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the kit shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction of the arrows;
, Figs. 4l, 5, 6 and 7 areV respectively sectional views taken along the lines 1 -4, 5-5, 6--6 and 7-7 of Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken along the line S-S'of Fig. 3 and viewed in the direction of the arrows; and
Fig. 9 is a partial sectional view, similar to Fig. Ll, showing a modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the kit disclosed comprises generally a razor head housing of generally box-like form indicated at H and preferably formed of a single piece of drawn sheet metal. The housing has an open upper end l() through which the head 11 of the razor R may be inserted and withdrawn. As shown in Fig. 4, a partition 12 preferably extends across the interior of the housing H adjacent the lower vend thereof to divide the interior of this housing into an upper razor head compa 1tment 13 and a `lower blade Com=y partment 1li.
A drawer 15 may be slidably carried within the blade compartment 14, and this drawer is preferably formed with a flanged outer C" end 16 extending upwardly therefrom across the end of the razor head compartment 13 when the drawer 15 is closed, asshown in Fig. 3. The upper end of the flange 16 is off set inwardly within the housing H, as indicated at 17 in Fig. 3. The end wall 13 of the housing opposite the flange 16 on the drawer extends across 'the housing ladjacent its lower end only, as shown in lli. 3.
Suitable means are prefere for movable attachment across 10 in the housing?` r-Jhereby n @ne razor head 11 may be removably lock-ef therein. ln the disclosed embodiment, elongated shaving accessory containers are employed for t iis purpose and "e disposed to close the opening' 10 on oppo te sid s of rhe razor handle 19 and to lie substantially ,arallel to the razor handle when in the C nosi tion.
close As shown in the t cessory container of elon ly cylindrical. form tegral or suitably attach one edge of wlreh is h'ngedly secured 'to one side edge of the housing l' L shaving ac- "ated substantialengages the upper er ge of the end wall 13 of the hous I' H when the 'container 20 is in the upright closed p ion, thus closing the end of the housing. The base portion has a similar depending end da; je 27 which overlaps the off-set portion 'l flange 16 and so closes the or iosite end of the housing itl when the container 23 is in the upright closed position. The base portion 21 has an inwardly offset locking l1* tlie J. free edge thereof, and cooper depressions and extensions 29 and 30 are arrange( on this lip and on the ho .ing wall to loclr the portion 21 and container 20?- in their closed position. Similarly, the base portion 24 of the container 23 has an off-set lip 31 at the free edge thereof and interlocking depressions and extensions and 33 are provided on the lip 31 and tire wall of the housing H. As shown in Fig. 3, the base portions 21 and 24 are respectively provided with rounded notches 34 and which meet to form a central opening 36 through which the handle 19 of the razor extends.
Although not essential to the invention, it is preferred to provide means on the containers 2O and 23 for confining the handle 19 of the razor when the kit is closed. This may be conveniently accomplished by providing complementary members 37 and 38, each fined to one of the containers., and adapted to enclose the razor handle 19 therebetween.
In the disclosed embodiment, the members 37 and 33 are respectively formed integrally with the caps 39 and 40 iiXed respectively to the upper ends of the containers and 23.
One of the handle retaining members, in this case the member 37, is provided with a circular end flange 41 which covers the upper end of the space between the members 37 and 33 and so encloses the upper end of the razor handle 19 when the kit is closed, as shown in Fig. 5. If desired, suitable lugs 42 may be fixed to or formed integral with the members 37 and 38 on their inner faces, these lugs acting to engage the upper end of the razor handle 19 and prevent vertical move ment of the razor when the kit is closed. If desired, the members 37 and 38 may be eX- tending downwardly to the base portions 21 and 24 whereby these members may enclose the razor handle throughout its length.
ln the operation of the device, the containers 20 and 23 are swung outwardly away from the opening 10 in the upper end of the housing H, whereupon the razor head 11 may be removed therefrom. When thus opened, the toilet or shaving articles, such as the shaving brush 44 and the tube of shaving cream 45, may be removed from the lower ends of the containers 20 and 23. The brush 44 and tube 45 may be conveniently frictionally retained within the containers 20 and 23 by engagement with the inner walls thereof. As clearly shown in Fig. 8, the pinched lower end diagonally within the base portion 24 of the container 23. After the container 23 has been swung to the open position, the razor blade drawer 15 may be drawn outwardly from the housing H and the blades may be removed therefrom for use in the razor.
It is entirely feasible to remove and insert the razor head 11 by swinging back one only of the containers, say the container 23, the razor head being then slipped into or out of the housing H laterally. Accordingly, one of the containers, say the container 20, may be permanently fixed to the housing H and may be provided with a removable cap to give access to the interior thereof.
It is sometimes preferred to carry shaving soap in the form of a stick or powder rather than cream. A shaving stick can obviously be readily substituted for the tube 45 in the container 23. In order to adapt the container 23 for use with powder, a sifter cap 47 of usual construction is provided at the upper end thereof and a removable plug 48, provided with a handle 49, is provided to close the lower end of the container 23 after it has been charged with powder 51, as shown in Fig. 9.
Due to the arrangement of the containers 2O and 23 in positions substantially parallel to the razor handle 19, the lit of the present invention is of extremely compact design and small over-all dimensions, and can be readily carried in the pocket of a traveler or in any other small space.
Although the invention has been disclosed 46 of the tube 45 may be disposed in connection with certain specific embodiments, it should be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact constructional arrangement shown, but includes all such modifications thereof as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
