USPENDERS.
Patented March 20,1877.
N. PETERS PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON, D C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIon JACOB BETTsoFfnnw YORK, n. Y., ASSIGNOR T0 HIMSELF AND SALOMON SOHIRMER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SUS-PENDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 188,572, dated March 20, 1877; application filed February 14, 1877.
city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Suspenders, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which i 1 Figure 1 represents a front view of a pair of suspenders containing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a like view of a portion of the suspender-straps.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to that class of suspenders for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me conjointly with Salomon Schirmer J one 27, 1876, No. 179,355, and is intended as an improvement whereby the manufacture of these suspenders is simplified and their cost is reduced.
My present improvement consists in a suspender-end made up of a flat cord or braid doubled to form a button-hole, its free ends being braided together and combined with a supplemental cord for retaining the braid, thereby producing an article which is not liable to rip or open, and which is simple and cheap in its construction.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a flat cord or braid, which is bent around into a loop, B, and which is plaited, braided, or woven by crossing andlrecrossing it, as shown, sufficient ot' the loop being left open to form a button-hole. With the flat cord or braid A is plaited, braided, or interwoven a supplemental cord, 0, the same being bent round the point where the cord or braid A is first crossed, or next to the loop or button-hole B, and then crossed and recrossed on itself, as well as on the flat cord or braid A, so as to hold the latter together.
By this means I obtain a 'suspender-end which lies perfectly flat, which is not liable to rip or tear, and which can be got up with little labor and at a small cost as compared with this class of suspender -ends as heretofore made.
It may be remarked that the flat cord or braid A and the supplemental cord 0 are plaited, braided, or interwoven at one operation, and preferably by hand.
The letter I) designates a suspenderstrap which is bound at its front end or edge by sewing or stitching the said end or edge similarly to a button-hole, as shown at E, Fig. 2. This stitched edge may obviously be produced either by hand or by amachine adapted to do this kind of work. By my invention I am enabled to hind-a suspender-strap with greater speed, and at less cost, than by any form of binding hitherto known, and, moreover, my binding has a neat and elegant appearance, while it is very durable.
I distinctly disclaim in this present application everything shown and described in the Patent No. 179,555.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A Suspender-end made up of a flat cord or braid doubled to form a buttonhole, B, its free ends being braided together, and combined with a supplemental cord, 0, for retaining the braid, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 9th day of February, 187 7.
