To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. SEAL, of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Blacking and other Brushes; andv I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and

' exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of ret'- erence marked thereon.

This invention has relation, mainly, to blacking-brnshes, and articles of like character; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement ot a pivoted and reversible handle having a circular iianged foot, and, in contact therewith, a perforated hed-plate, adapted to be secured to the back of the brush, and to receive the pivot of the handle-post, and the projecting part of a spring locking stud or catch, for iixing the position ot' the handle when adjusted, as hereinafter shown and described.

In the accompanyingl drawings, the letter A designates a blaeking-brush of the usual form, having on one side the polishing-bristles B, and on the other the blacking-bristles O at oneend. D represents a pivot-plate, which is designed to be secured to the handle end of the back E of the brush, opposite to the patch C of blacking-bristles, by means of screws a, which pass through countersunk perforations b therein. In the center ot` the plate is formed a pivot-hole, c, and on each side ot' thesame apertures d, or recesses for engagement with the locking-stud. F indicates the standard or post of the handle G, which may be formed therewith or connected thereto by means of a bolt and nut, orrother fastening, as indicated in the drawings. The foot z e of the p'ost is spreadin a circular flaring or anged form, well over the plate D, in such a manner as to cover the locking-apertures at all times, and

to brace the post laterally as well as in the direction of the handle. Through the pivothole c passes the pivot h, which is headed over a washer, k, or otherwise secured below the plate D. H represents a recess or box formed in the foot of the post, and serving to hold .the locking-stud s' and the spring t, whereby it is automatically kept up to its work. The end of this stud projects through an aperture in the back of the recess, so that it vcan be raised or disengaged from the aperture in the plate D, when it is desired to readjust the g handle.

In the brush illustrated, the lockingapertures d are arranged diametrically opposite each other, so that when the locking-stud is engaged with one, the handleis turned outward, or in the position for use, as indicated in Fig. 2 ofthe drawings.

What I claim, and desire to. secure by Letters Patent, is-
