SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,996, dated February 15, 1887.

To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that we, JOHN B. Hon/"E and FREDERICK `D. FRY, citizens of the United States, residing at Danbury, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Blocks; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to IO the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and igu res of reference marked thereon.

The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective means for securing hats to their blocks while being finished, thereby dispensing with the usual tacks, cords, and other like fastenings now in common use; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the fastening and means for operationg it, substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents a hat-block of any of the usual forms, and B represents the hat held thereon while being finished by our improved fastening device, which is a permament fixture to the block and consists of a pin or spur, C, bent as shown in Fig. 4,whieh we shall hereinafter term a crank-pin. The shank of this pin enters a perforation in a circular block, D,

4o said block being seated in a socket-plate, E, fitting in a niortise in the under side of the block A. The block D is held within the socket of the plate E by means of a screw, a, which forms the pivotal axis of the block D.

rlhe screw a passes through a perforation in a brace, b,which extends diametrically across the block D, and has its ends seated in recesses c in the plate E. The block D is cut away, as shown at d, to form a space for the 5o pin to work in, said pin C extending through a perforation7 e, in the side of the plate E.

The block D is provided with perforations diametrically opposite each other, as shown in Fig. l, for engaging therewith a suitable key or tool for turning it.

When the block D is turned in the proper direction, as indicated by the arrow, Fig. 3, the pin will be drawn in, as shown in dotted lines, and when the block is turned in the opposite direction the pin is forced out and 6o through the hat B and brought down tightly against it,which motion of the pin is attained by its peculiar bend, thus holding the body of the hat to the Vblock A and preventing it from slipping or working off the block A.

It is evident that other means may be employed for operating the crank-pin C besides those shown, and we therefore reserve the right to make such changes or modiiications in the operating mechanism as come within 7C the scope of our invention, the essential feature of which is the crank-pin adapted to pass through the body of the hat and afterward turn down against it, as hereinbefore described.

Having now fully described our invention, whatwe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A fastening device for securing hats on hat-blocks, consisting of a movable crank-pin 30 adapted to pass through the hat and afterward turn down against it, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A device for securing hats on hat-blocks, consisting of a crank-pin and means for op- S5 erating it, consisting of a block, movable upon a pivot, said pin entering a perforation in said block, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In the means for securing hats to hat- 9o blocks, the combination of a crank-pin, a circular block for operating the same, a socketplate to form a seat for the block, and a screw for connecting the block to the plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
