Description
E. ROSENTH'AL. I COMBINED TABLE, SIDE-BOARD AND SAFE No.188,4.-15. Patented. March 13, 1877.
WITNESSES I INVENTOR ATTORNEY N. PETERS. PHo'ro-LHHmmPnER,'wAmNGwN a c ELIAS.
PATENIDE re IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED TABLE, SIDEBOARD AND SAFE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,415, dated March 13, 1877; application filed February 21, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS ROSENTHAL, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and valuable Improvementin Combined Table, Sideboard, and Safe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a front elevation of my invention, showing the sideboard up and the top folded. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same, showing the table-top unfolded, the sideboard thrown back, and the shelf and brackets swung in upon the said board.
This invention has relation to improvements in combined tables, sideboards, and safes.
The object of my invention is to devise an article of furniture which will be convertible at pleasure from a sideboardor safe into a table, and which-shall possess the useful qualities of each of the said articles.
The nature of my invention will be fully understood from the following description.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the body of a safe or sideboard, which may be on rollers, having the usual divisions and folding doors. This safe will have the usual false top a, provided at or near one end with a'longitudinal slot, 1;, through which a headed bolt, 0, passes into the real top B. This top is composed of two or more sections, '5 i 1?, hinged together by link-connections c, which will allow the said sections to be folded, the one upon the other, with the edges thereof flush with each other. The sections are of the same, or nearly the same, width as the false top a, and of a length such "as to form a projecting edge, e.
0 represents a top board, connected with the safe-body A by means of hinges f, and
sustained in an upright position by means of a turn-button, 9. Board C is provided with a shelf, D, and two or more supporting-brackets, E, both of which are hinged to the board,
-by Letters Patent, is
1. The hinged top board 0, having the and are capable of vibrating inward upon the same. In this position, the button g being properly turned, the board 0, with all its attachments, may be swung downward behind the body of the safe, out of the way,
and in such a position that the safe may be thrust close against the wall. By this means, also, the fragile sideboard-top is reduced to a compact form, which admits of close storage during transportation, and does away with all danger of breakage.
By reversing the movements above set forth the safe will be converted into a handsomesideboard or buffet. The safe is converted into a serviceable table by giving the top B endwise movement until bolt 0 strikes the outer end of the slot b, then turning it at right angles to its former position, and unfolding thesections M 7?, The false top in this,position breaks joints with the said sections, and affords them adequate support;
but the outer sectionswill be prevented fromsagging by means of an extensible slide, 1,
at one or both ends, or a drawer, Z, at one end and a slide at the other. I
The top, unfolded as above described, will be prevented from turning, with bolt 0 as a pivot, by means of a catch, F, arranged at one or both ends of the safe-body, and adapted to engage in a seat or recess formed in the lower section i. This catch will serve the same purpose when the top is folded up,
hinged shaft D, and brackets E, in combination with a safe or cupboard having a sectional unfolding endwise movable and vibrating top B, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with the false top a, having longitudinal slots 1), the sections 6 t a? of a tabletop, connected together by the link-joint hinges 0, the lower one of said sections being provided with the headed pin 0, adapted to slide in the slots b, substantially as specified. I
3. The combination. of the sectional folding table-top with a safe or sideboard body, and the board 0, adapted to be swung back out of the way behind the body, or up into position to form the board, substantially as specified.
4. A sideboard provided with the hinged vei'ticallyvibrating board 0, having the hinged'shelf or shelves D, and the hinged brackets E, connected with the sideboard-body A, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I-have hereunto subscribed my nain'efin the presence of two witnesses. l
