UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. WILSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORSET-DUMMIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,336, dated February 13, 1877; application filed January :3, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,'JOHN J. W1LsoN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Corset-Dummy, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is a dummy constructed, as fully described hereafter, to exhibit the fit and adaptability of a'corset.
In the drawing, Figure l is an external view of the dummy, and Fig.2 an external view showing the dummy supporting the corset.
Ordinary dummies for the exhibition of corsets are made of wire frames, which barely approximate the human figure, and serve merelyto distend the corset and support it in an upright position without in any manner demonstrating its adaptation to the body.
My object has been to produce a dummy which will not only exhibit a corset in an attractive manner, but will further demonstrate the capacity of the corset to support the body, to protect the breasts, and to cover and fit nicely to the hips, and this I effect by making the dummy correspond in shape with the fe male body from the head to and below the hips, as shown in Fig. 1, in whicha, is the trunk supporting the head 0, merging intothe hip portion 6, provided with breasts 1), and otherwise conforming to a perfect female figure, a pedestal or stand being formed at the lower end when necessary to afford a suitable support.
1 prefer to make the dummy of papier mach or plaster, although it may be made of a wire frame suitably covered, a flesh-colored tint being imparted to insure a more perfect resemblance to the body.
A dummy thus constructed possesses important advantages over the ordinary wire frames. For instance, if a corset intended to protect the breasts is to be exhibited, its application to the dummy will at once demonstrate its efficiency, its adaptability to the hips and to the body, its capacity to be enlarged or contracted, to be fastened or released, or to serve as an adjunct to any suitable .kind of supporter, and yet conform to the body, being similarly shown. Moreover, the improved dummy possesses a peculiar capacity for the display of the goods in an attractive manner likely to insure sale, exhibiting, as it does, the goods in a natural position in relation to the head and bust, so that the purchaser may know the appearance of the article when worn without applying it to the body.
I claim as a new article of manufacture l. A corset-dummy having the trunk portion a, the hip portion e, the breasts b b, and the neck, all conforming to a perfect female figure, and serving to sustain, display, and exhibit the fit of a corset, as set forth.
2. A corset-dummy consisting of a head and trunk conforming in form to a female figure, and adapted to carrying and exhibiting a corset, as specified.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence oftwo subscribing witnesses.
JOHN J. WILSON. Witnesses:
SPENCER G. DOTY, WILLIAM J. DALTON.
