This invention relates to an advertising device for advantageously and attractively displaying package merchandise such as is sold in bottles, cans, cartons, bags, and the like. In some cases,

the present device is even adaptable for the display of unpackaged goods.

One of the best psychological factors of effective avertising, is the reaction of the buying public I to three dimensional objects and displays. Still 0 another factor is the use of statuettes or figures which represent in the mind of the public a symbol oi the product being sold. However, the main difiiculty in the use of such figures has been the subjugation of the package of merchandise or 15 the like in favor of the more attractive and eyecatching display. Awkward attempts have been made to combine the two, but where success has been had to any small degree, the expense has been prohibitive for use in universal displays.

The present invention has pointed the way for an efficient and attractive means for dis playing merchandise in connection with a statuette in such a manner as to present a three dimensional advertising and display unit with the merchandise as a vital part of the unit.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a display device consisting of a statuette or the like, the pedal extremities of which will serve to support and maintain a package of merchandise or the like, the upper body portion of which will consist of a member adapted to fit over the top of said package or the like, and the body of said statuette being formed by the package itself It is a further object of the present invention to provide a display device consisting of a statuette, having as its body and torso a package of merchandise, and further having separable members fitting upon said package as the extremities 4 of said statuette, said members being held together upon said package.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a display device of the character described, which will comprise a statuette body of merchandise, the extremities of which are pre-formed members, which are held together upon said package of merchandise by resilient means, one of said members forming a support for said package and constituting a base for said statuette.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a device of the character described, which will permit the association or dissociation of a package of merchandise therewith without u the marring or deforming of said device.

Still a further object of the present invention is to provide a display device of the character described, which will be effective in discharging its designated purpose, and which will be economical and simple in construction and manu- 5 facture.

A further object of the present invention is to provide an advertising device of the character described, which will comprise a statuette having a space provided therein for receiving an artim cle of merchandise, said article of merchandise serving as the torso portion of said statuette, and a portion of said device being constructed of substantially resilient material adapted to be deformed to permit the association or dissociation 1-5 of said article of merchandise therewith.

Still, a further object of the present invention is'to provide in an advertising device of the character described, novel means for the illumination of said device and the merchandise associated 2o therewith.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination 25 of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of the structure 30 may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

For the purpose of facilitating an understanding of my invention, I have illustrated in the 35 accompanying drawing, a preferred embodiment thereof, from an inspection of which, when considered in connection with the following description, my invention, its mode of construction, assembly and operation, and many of its advan- 4o tages should be readily understood and appreciated.

Referring to the drawing in which the same characters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding or similar parts throughout the several figures of the drawing:

Generally, the invention consists of a device simulating a figure, comprising a pedestal upon which said figure is mounted, with the lower extremities of said figure disposed upon said pedestal and terminating in a platform for supporting a package of merchandise, a head and upper torso portion adapted to fit over the top of the package of merchandise, and means for maintaining said parts in assembled condition with said package of merchandise.

In the embodiments illustrated in the drawing, the lower portion of the statuette is formed to present the appearance of a pedestal or stand I0, having legs II or other bottom portion disposed thereon, and terminating in the merchandise platform I2. Said lower portion may be formed as an integrally cast or otherwise fabricated single member with the platform I2 adapted for the support of the base I3 of an article of merchandise, such as the bottle I4 illustrated in the drawing. However, it is to be realized that any package, such as a can, a box, a bag and the like can be used. The same should be borne in mind when reference below is made to a bottle.

The upper portion I5 constituting the head, upper torso and arms of the statuette illustrated is hollow, as shown at I6, and fits over the top I! of the package I4 and rests thereon. Thus, it will be seen that the major portion of the package is advantageously displayed and constitutes the torso of the statuette.

The upper and lower portions are provided with members I8 stretching therebetween to hold said portions in assembled relation upon the bottle I4. Said members I8 may take the bands, rubber bands, springs, or any other resilient members. The extremities II and I5 may be provided with hook eyes, loops or the like to provide for attachment of the members I8, of which there will normally be two, one on each side.

In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the members I8 are wide elastic bands provided at either end with stitched loops I9. Said loops engage removable pins 20 set into the extremities at convenient places. The lower ends of the members I8 extend through the platform I2 via slots 2| formed therein to allow passage therethrough.

In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the elastic member I8 may be passed through the slot 2I on one side of the platform I2 across the bottom thereof and up through opposite slot 2|. Thus, the member I8 need be only one band.

The pedestal ID of the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 is provided with a source of illumination, such as, for example, an electric light bulb 22 and associated socket 23, cord 24 and plug 25. The members I0 and II may be provided with lenses, glass or the like, designated generally at 2B for advertisement and i1- lumination purposes. The main portion of the light from the bulb 22 is directed upwards through the opening 2'! in the platform I2. The light which is directed upwards diffuses through the liquid in the bottle I4, producing beautiful lighting effects and enhancing the appearance of the device considerably.

Another modification of the present invention, which is disclosed in Figs. 4 and 5, eliminates the use of the members I8. The figure is provided with a rear member connecting the upper and lower portions. In the illustration, the member takes the form of a back 28 of the apparent garments of the figure represented. The same is integrally formed with the rest of the statuette, or is rigidly fixed thereto. The connecting member is of semi-rigid resiliency, being sufficiently pliable to allow the same to be bent back, as shown in Fig. 5, for the insertion or removal of the article of merchandise I 4. When the article is in place, the resilience of the member 28 causes the device to remain erect and in closely associated assembly.

If desired, the platform I2 may be provided on its upper face with a suitable recess for the reception therein of the bottom wall of a bottle or package I4, so as to snugly hold the same therein. Similarly, the upper hollowed portion I5 of the device may be formed so as to snugly fit upon the upper portion of the bottle or package I4, with the result that any connecting means, such as the band I8 or the back member 28 may be eliminated without affecting the resultant assembly.

The material from which the statuette can be constructed may be one of a wide variety of substances, as, for example, plaster, rubber, plastics, composition materials, papier-mach, cardboard, wood, wood pulp, paper, Cellophane, Celluloid, crepe paper, leather, cloth, cotton, glass, woolen goods, etc., and combinations thereof.

The invention could be as easily adopted for large statues and larger items of merchandise than suggested by a corresponding change of size and design as required, and will serve the purpose equally as well.

Itshould also be obvious that the statuette or figure need not always be in the form of. a human, but may take the appearance of animals, structures, trees, and so on.

Since it is believed that the above disclosure of the construction of the preferred embodiments of my invention will obviously disclose the entire and complete operation thereof, further explanation will be dispensed with.

While reference and disclosure have been made with regard to more or less specific embodiments of my invention, it is to be noted that the details and less important features are capable of assuming diversified forms and wide variation without departing from the purview of my invention. I do not wish to be limited in my Letters Patent to specificities as disclosed, but rather would be protected for the broad generalities to which my invention entitles me, and which are herewith stated in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A display device of the character described simulating a figure comprising a base, an article of merchandise disposed upon said base, said base simulating the lower extremities of said figure, said article of merchandise forming the main portion of the body of said figure, and a member simulating the upper extremities of said figure disposed upon said article of merchandise.

2. A display device of the character described simulating a figure comprising a base, an article of merchandise disposed upon said base, said base simulating the lower extremities of said figure, said article of merchandise forming the main portion of the body of said figure, a member simulating the upper extremities of said figure disposed upon said article of merchandise, and means for maintaining said base, article, and member in assembled relationship.

A display device of the character described, simulating a figure comprising a base, an article of merchandise disposed upon said base, said base simulating the lower extremities of said figure, said article of merchandise forming the main portion of, the body of said figure, a member simulating the upper extremities of said figure disposed upon said article of merchandise, and resilient means for maintaining said base, article, and member in assembled relationship.

A display device of the character described simulating a figure comprising a base, an article of merchandise disposed upon said base, said base simulating the lower extremities of said figure, said article of merchandise forming the main portion of the body of said figure, a member simulating the upper extremities of said figure disposed upon said article of merchandise, and being provided with a hollow interior for fitting upon said article of merchandise.

A display device of the character described simulating a figure comprising a pedestal, means simulating the lower extremities of said figure rigidly attached to said pedestal and forming a base, an article of merchandise maintained on said base, said article of merchandise forming the main portion of. the body of said figure, and an upper portion substantially simulating the head, upper body, and arms of said figure disposed upon said article of merchandise.

A display device of the character described simulating a figure comprising a base, an article of merchandise disposed upon said base, said base simulating the lower extremities of said figure, said article of merchandise forming the main portion of the body of said figure, a member simulating the upper extremities of said figure disposed upon said article of merchandise, said base being provided with means for illumihating said figure and the merchandise associated therewith.

'7. A display device of the character described simulating a figure comprising a base, an article of merchandise disposedv upon said base, said base simulating the lower extremities of said figure, said article or merchandise forming the main portion of the body of said-figure, a member simulating the upper extremities of said figure disposed upon said article of merchandise, and semirigid, resilient means connecting saidupper and lower extremities of said figure.

8. A display device of the character described comprising upper and lower portions adapted for connection with each other by means of an article of merchandise to present when so connected the simulation of a figure, said upper portion simulating the upper extremities of said figure, said lower portion simulating the lower extremities of said figure, said article or merchandise constituting the main portion of the body of said simulated figure, and resilient means for maintaining said portions and said article or merchandise in assembled relationship.

9. A display device of the character described simulating a figure, upper and lower portions simulating like extremities of said figure, an article of merchandise between said upper and lower portions, and resilient means extending between said upper and lower portions to hold said article of merchandise and maintain said figure in assembly.

10. A display device of the character described simulating a figure, upper and lower portions simulating like extremities of said figure, an article oi merchandise between said upper and lower portions, and resilient means extending between said upper and lower portions to hold said article of merchandise and maintain said figure in assembly, said resilient means comprising a band fixed to said upper member and being looped through said lower portion through means provided therefor in said lower portion.

A display device of the character described simulating a figure comprising a pedestal, means simulating the lower extremities of said figure rigidly attached to said pedestal and forming a base, an article of merchandise maintained. on said base, said article of merchandise forming the main portion of the body of said figure, an upper portion substantially simulating the head, upper body, and arms of said figure disposed upon said article of merchandise, and resilient means fixed to said upper portion and looped through the said base through means provided therefor for maintaining said figure in assembled relationship.

12. In a display device of the character described simulating a figure, a pedestal, means simulating the lower extremities of said figure being associated with said pedestal, and platform means upon said last-mentioned means, an article of merchandise disposed upon said platform means and constituting the main portion ofthebody of said figure, means disposed above merchandise simulating the upper extremities of said figure, and resilient means attached to said last-mentioned means extending down the sides of said article of merchandise and through openings provided therefor in said platform means and extending below said platform means to hold said figure in assembled relationship.
