Corporation, Roches New York N. Y., a corporation of Application January 12, 1937, Serial No. 120,308
10 Claims.
The invention relates to a display device.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a display device having means for supporting, holding and displaying a bottle or other 5 receptacle and various articles and'adapted to be folded around an article to be displayed and to be placed in a carton or other container for packing and shipping in such folded condition and capable, when the bottle or other article is 10 withdrawn from the carton or other container,
of automatically unfolding and opening or spreading out into display position without manual manipulation, leaving absolutely nothing for a shopkeeper or other person to do other than 15 place the display device with its contents upon a show case, counter or other surface for display.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and inexpensive displaydevice which will present an ornamental appearance 20 and be adapted to be stamped, die cut or similarly formed from a single piece of sheet material in a single operation and capable of being easily and quickly arranged to receive a bottle or other article to be displayed without the employment of 25 separate fastening devices or similar fastening means.
A further object of the invention is to provide a display device forming a holder for a bottle or other article and open at the front for exposing 30 such article to advantageously display the same and provided at opposite sides of its open front with display wings extending from and forming continuations of the adiacent sides or walls of the body of the display device when the same is in 35 displaying condition and arranged to be folded over each other and over the bottle or other article to protect the latter during shipment as well as to arrange the display device in a compact condition for packing and shipping.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fullydescrlbed, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims 45 hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction, within the` scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of 50 the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure1 is a perspective view of a display device constructed in accordance with this invention and containing a bottle and arranged for dis- 55 playing the same.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, the bottle being illustrated in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same.
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view showing the display device and bottle arranged within a carton.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the display device is formed.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the display device is formed from a blank i stamped or die cut from a single piece of sheet material such as cardboard, fiber board and the like having suillcient resiliency to cause the display device after being folded and arranged within a carton 2 or the container to open automatically when removed from the .container and automatically assume a display condition without manual manipulation, as hereinafter fully explained.
The blank I, which is substantially oblong, has a curved longitudinal side edge 3, which is arranged at the top of the display device when the same is set up for use, whereby the display device presents an ornamental, attractive and tapering appearance, as clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing. The blank is preferably line scored transversely at the center at 4 and at equal distances therefrom at 5 and 6 to form side walls or members 1 and 8 and display wings 8.
The blank is provided adjacent the curved side edge with spaced longitudinal parallel cuts i which form an integral horizontal strap ii for engaging the neck of a bottle i2. When the display device is set up for use as shown in Figure l, the side walls 1 and 8 are arranged substantially at right angles to each other, and the integral neck engaging strap or member Il is bowed forwardly to provide a space defined by the side walls 1 and 8 and the said strap for receiving and confining the neck of the bottle. The cuts lli preferably extend from the central score line 4 to points about midway of the side walls 1 and l of the blank, as clearly illustrated in Figure of the drawing.
The blank is provided at the lower edge of the side wall 1 with an approximately triangular bottom member I3 and is scored longitudinally at il to form a hinge connection between the bottom member i3 and the said side wall 1. The bottom member i3 isprovided at the side edge adjacent the side wall 8 with a hinged flap I5 which is folded upwardly on the exterior of the side wall .when the display device is set up for use. The bottom member I3 is provided at its juncture with the flap I5 With a score line I6 to form a hinge connection between the flap I5 and the bottom member I3.
The hinged flap I5 which is approximately triangular is provided at its central apex portion with a hook I'I formed by cutting away the flap at I8 adjacent the inner or underside of thebill or projecting portion of the hook I1. The lower portion of the side wall 8 is provided with a substantially V-shaped cut or slit I9, which is engaged by the hook shaped portion I'I of the hinged flap I5 when the display device is set up for use.
One or more of the score lines may or may not be used, and the blank may, if desired, have short score lines at the ends of the. neck engaging strap II if desired. In setting the display device up for use, the blank is folded on the score line I 4 to arrange the bottom member at right angles to the side wall 1 and it is then folded on the score line 4 to arrange the side walls 1 and 8 at an angle to each other. The angle is preferably slightly less than a right angle or 90. The ap I5 is then folded against the exterior of the side wall 8, and its hook is engaged with the slit I9, which securely retains the display device in its set up or display condition. Prior to the folding of the sides 'I and 8, the bottle neck engaging strap is bowed forwardly, but this may, of course, be effected after the folding and locking of the side Walls.
The display wings extend outwardly from the side walls of the display device, which is open at the front to enable a bottle or other article to be readily placed upon the bottom member I3 and engaged with the top strap II, and in practice the display device will be provided at the front with suitable matter printed or otherwise placed on the display form for advertising the article or product displayed.
After the bottle is placed in the display device, the wings are folded over each other across the open front of the display device and across the exposed face of the bottle to protect the latter and also to arrange the display device in a compact condition to enable it to be readily placed in a carton or other container for packing and shipping. When the display device with the bottle is removed from the carton, the display Wings open automatically to their extended display position without any manual manipulation on the part of a storekeeper or other person, and there is abso. lutely nothing else to do but to remove the display device from the carton and place it upon a show case, counter or other surface for display of the contents of the device.
The bottom member I3 by being formed integral with one of the side Walls of the device and by being detachably interlocked with the other side wall maintains the display device in a set-up display condition without the use of separate fastening devices or similar fastening means. The bottle illustrated in the accompanying drawing is substantially triangular in horizontal section to conform to the configuration of the bottom member I3, but it may, of course, be of any other desired form.
