M, B. RICHMAN lFIGURE TOY Filed July e, 195e' Patented Apr. 27, 1937 o UNITED i STATES FIGURE TOY `ltliriaimlum Richman, Cincinnati, Ohio Appneation 'July l6,1936, serial 10.89172 .6 claims. (o1. 'i6- 151) Thisinvention relates `to improvements in gure toys, and the primary object ofthe present invexitionsis tto provide a figure toy or doll which is of 'novelconstruction and capable of presenting selectively any lone of a plurality of`different figures orcharacters. 1
` More particularly, the present inventionraims to A,provide a multiple figure toy or doll including a hollow member representing a portion of the body of an animal 'andl having *an plurality of openings, and a plurality of VVelements carried by and stored within said hollow member, said elements being capable of being selectively withdrawn from said hollow member through the respective `openings to complete the body ofthe animal orgure or to complete Iand enhance said body or iigure, said elements further being of different `form or kind to provide for the selective presentation `of any one oi' a plurality of dinerent guresor-charactrs.
4With the'above general objects in View, and others which will :become apparent as the natureof the invention is better understood, such invention consists in 'the novel form, combinationand arrangement of partshereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing, andclaimed. Y
I-n the drawing:
Figure 1 is an enlarged perspectiveview of a form of gure toy embodying the present invention,` with the withdrawable elements 'inserted and stored within the'hollow member of the toy.
Figure 2 is a view ofthe toyshowninligure "l, partially in perspective and "partially in front elevation, with `two of the withdrawable elements withdrawn from the hollow member to present one of the plurality of .different guresor characters; and
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary -section` taken on Athe plane oi line 3 5 'of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the illustrated embodiment of the present invention consists of a multiple doll including a hollow member 5 representing the head of a human ligure including a cylindrical wall 6 and circular end or front and rear walls 'I and 8. These walls may be formed of any suitable material such as stiif cardboard, buckram, etc. Said Walls are provided with a fabric covering 9 of attractive color, and on the outer surface of the portion of the cover 9 for the front wall l may be suitably provided or depicted the features of the head, such as the mouth I l), nose Il, eyes I2 and cheek rouge I3. A soft padding is preferably provided as at I4 between the front wall 1 and its covering 9. Hanks of cord may be suitably provided von and stitched or otherwisesecured to the upper portion of the hollow member 5, as at I5 to represent the hair. A plurality of openings or circumferentially elongated slots I E are provided in the lower portion of the wall 6, while similaropeningsor" slots 'I -'I `are provided in the top `or upper portion of said wall 6. f f
Carried by and arranged within the lower 'portion of the hollow member '5 are a plurality of elements I8 capable of being withdrawn fromH the member 5 through the respective slots I5, as well'as lreturnable within the `member 5 through said slots I6. The elements I8 'differ in form or kind, and each, when withdrawn from the member f5, is adapted to complete the g-ureror body of the doll. For instance, one element vI8 may be of a form to represent the torso, legs and arms of a doll suitably dressed, another of the element-s I8 may represent a di'iferent form oftorso Vor `a differently posed and dressed lower portion of the body of'a figure, and =so on, Thus, by selectively withdrawing the elements "I8 from the hollow member '5, any one of a number ofdiferent 'gures or characters may bepresented. Asshown the elements IB are Aformed in proper shape and character out of fabric which may be conveniently folded and tucked into the member 5 through the slots I8 a-s well as suitably engaged and withdrawn from said member 5 through said slots 156. To prevent detachment ofthe elements I8 from the member 5, suitable provision `may Vbe made, such as stitching of said elements to thel wall 6 about the respective slots.
Another series of elements I8a are carried by and arranged or stored vwithin the `upper `portion of the hollow member 5, which latter elements may represent different kinds or forms of headwearand accessories such as combs, ribbons,` etc. These yelements `=I8a can be selectivelywithdrawn from the member 5 through the respective slots I'I for the purpose of differently enhancing the head member 5.
Ii desired, the interior of the hollow member 5 may be divided into a number of separate compartments, each adapted to receive one of the elements I8 or Ia. This may be done in diierent ways, but accomplishment of the result is` illustrated as had by dividing the interior of said member 5 through the medium of a plurality of spaced partitions I9 extending parallel Vwith the front and rear walls I and 8 and disposed lin planes intermediate adjacent openings I6 and adjacent openings Il. Additional horizontal.
PATENT oF-FlcE partitions 2l] may be provided to separate the elements I8 from the elements la, and the compartments I9 and 20 may be formed of suitable stiff material such as buckram.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the present invention provides a novel form of multiple figure toy or doll which may be conveniently transformed to present any desired one of a plurality of gures or characters and to provide for differently enhancing such characters. It will be understood, however, that the illustrated embodiment of the invention is simply shown and described by way of example to reveal the general ideas or principles involved. It is therefore pointed out that the invention is susceptible of many and varied modifications and changes without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. For instance, it will be obvious that facial features may be depicted or otherwise provided on more than one side or surface of the hollow member to increase the number of different figures or characters which may be presented. It will also be apparent that the hollow member 5 need not necessarily represent the head of a human gure or other animal. In other words, the hollow member 5 may consist of any selected portion of the body of a human figure or other animal, the completion and enhancement of which may be effected bythe elements I8 and/or la. For convenience in carrying the toy, a suitable hand loop or handle 2| may be provided, which handle is shown in the nature of a piece of ribbon extending over the top of the member 5 and attached at its ends to the opposite side of said member 5.
A figure toy or doll embodying the present invention affords variety of amusement and the opportunity of a child to practice creative talent and-good habits relative to the care and orderly placing of the elements l5, I8 and l8a.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A multiple figure toy comprising a hollow member representing at least a portion of the body of an animal and provided with a plurality of openings, and a plurality of elements arranged within and selectively withdrawable from said hollow member through the respective openings of the latter to enhance said body of the animal, said elements differing in form or character so as to present, in connection with said hollow member, a plurality of figures or characters.
2. A figure toy including a hollow member representing at least a portion of the body of an animal and having a plurality of openings in the top thereof and a plurality of openings in the bottom thereof, and a plurality of elements arranged within said hollow member and selectively withdrawable from the latter through the respective openings to enhance said representation of the body of an animal, said elements differing one from the other so as to provide for the selective presentation of any one of a plurality of different figures.
3. A multiple figure toy comprising a hollow member representing at least a portion of the body of an animal and provided with a plurality of openings, a plurality of elements arranged within and selectively withdrawable from said hollow member through the respective openings of the latter to enhance said body of the animal, said elements differing in form or character so as to present, in connection with said hollow member, a plurality of figures or characters, and means providing a plurality of compartments within said hollow member each arranged to receive one of said elements.
4. A figure toy including a hollow member representing at least a portion of the body of an animal and having a plurality of openings in the top thereof and a plurality of openings in the bottom thereof, a plurality of elements arranged within said hollow member and selectively withdrawable from the latter through the respective openings to enhance said representation of the body of an animal, said elements differing one from the other so as to provide for the selective presentation of any one of a plurality of different figures, and means providing a plurality of compartments in the upper portion of and a plurality of compartments in the lower portion of said hollow member, each of said compartments being arranged to receive one of said elements.
5. A multiple doll comprising a hollow member representing the head of a human figure and having a plurality of openings in the bottom thereof, and a plurality of elements arranged within and selectively withdrawable from said hollow member through said openings thereof, said elements being of a form to complete the human figure and differing from each other for selectively presenting any one of a plurality of different characters.
6. A multiple doll comprising a hollow member representing the head of a human figure and having a plurality of openings in the bottom thereof, a plurality of elements arranged within and selectively withdrawable from said hollow member through said openings thereof, said elements being of a form to complete the human figure and differing from each other for selectively presenting any one of a plurality of different characters, said hollow member further having a plurality of openings in the top thereof, and further elements arranged within and selectively withdrawable from said hollow member through the latter openings to provide selectively useable different forms of headwear or accessories for enhancing the head represented by said hollow member.
