Description

Patented Aug, l6, I932 evant PATENT orrmn JACOB CRAMER, F PHILADELPHIA, AND MAX SEER/R, 0F GERMANTOWN, PENNSYEW VANIA, ASSIGNORS T0 IRA JEWELL WILLIAMS AND J. THBUSTON MANNING, {FE
BOTH OF PHILADELPHIA,
PENNSYLVANIA, RECEIVERS FOR PERKIOMEN TRUNK d BAG COMPANY, INC., A. CORPORATION 0E PENNSYLVANIA Application filed March 8, 1980. Serial No. 434,269.
This invention relates to pockets generally, which maybe used wherever pockets are used and particularly adapted for week-end bags, suit cases, or the like,-all of which are 5; hereinafter designated by the single term bag,and for automobiles or the like, and
has as a general object the provision of a simple, neat appearing and improved pocket, to More particularly stated, one of the objects of this invention is to provide a pocket having a mouth which is taut in its closed pos tion and easily accessible in its open position.
Another object of this invention is to provide a pocket having a mouth which is POSP tively fastened in its closed position and which is comparatively wide in its open position whereby the said pocket when open is as easily accessible for inserting or removing contents therefrom.
Another object of this invention is to provide a pocket having a mouth which is positively fastened in the closed position and in which the stresses and strains on the pocket month which arise as an incident of the operation of placing articles in the pockets nowknown and used are to a large measure eliminated.
Another object of this invention is to provide a pocket which, though having a mouth which is positively fastened in the closed position and easily accessible in the open position is nevertheless neat and plasing to the eye in either position.
Another object of this invention is to produce apocket one wall of which isformed by a stifi stationary member (such as the lid, a side, or a permanent partition of a trunk or the side door or wall of an automobile), the other wall of which is formed by a second member attached to the said stationary wall, the mouth of the said pocket being taut and positively fastened in its closed position and being comparatively wide and easily accessible in its open pos1tion.
Another object of this invention is to pro-= duce a pocket having a positively fastened mouth in the closed position one lip of which is stationary in both the open and closed position of the said mouth and the second lip of which is movable with respect to the first said lip.
These as well as other objects, both individually and collectively, and the advantages resulting therefrom, will become more evident from the following description and drawing which'form a part thereof.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a week-end bag, having our improved pocket attached to the lid thereof the solid lines showing the position of the lips and one pocket wall in the closed position and the dotted lines showing the same in the open position.
Figure 2 is a section along the line 2-2 of Figure l the closed position of the lips and one pocket wall being shown in solid lines and the open position in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a section along the line 3-3 of Figure 1 with the closed and open positions of the lips and one pocket wall being shown by full and dotted lines respectively.
Figure 4: is a perspective view of a weekend bag showing a modification of our invention, portions of the bag are shown broken away.
Referring more particularly to the drawing wherein similar reference numerals denote similar parts, reference numeral 1 designates the bag as a unit which consists of a body portion 2 and a lid 3.
lhe lid 3 has, among other things, a top or main wall 4 which has fastened thereto along three of its'edges by lines of stitching 6, or in any other manner desired, a second partially movable wall 5 which combines with a portion of the lid wall 4 to form a pocket 7. The free edge 8 of the wall 5 is convex in outline and is turned back on itself to form a wall 22 which is stitched along the line 23 to form a loop 24. A resilient rubber band 19 extends through the loop 24: and has as its terminal points the terminal points 2020 of the mouth 15 of pocket 7.
The secondary wall 5 is cut longer than the portion of the lid wall 4: with which it is to cooperate and the length is taken up along the lower line of attachment 25 in a series 01% tucks 26 which result in a plurality of longitudinal folds 21. In the normal or open position of the mouth the resilient member 19 is substantially parallel with the base of the lid 3. Because of the fact that the lip 8 is convex in outline in the closed position the wall 5 forms a slack or downward bulge 18 at its lower end when in the open position with the lowest point of the bulge directlybelow the highest point in the convex lines as shown very clearly by the solid and dotted lines in Figures 1 and 2 which represent the open and closed positions of the pocket mouth.
The lip 8 has attached thereto a base member 9 which carries one of the operative members of the well known slide fastener closure means 14. Fastened to the lid wall 4 by a line of stitching 12 or in, any other manner desired is a convex bearing member 11 which carries the operative members 13 of the said slide fastener closing means 14. The member 11 is to be considered as the second or stationary lip of the mouth .15 of the pocket 7 A slide 16 completes the slide fastener closure means. Since this closure means is well known in the art and can be bought in the open market, it will not be described in any greater detail here.
When the bag is in use the pocket may be kept in either the open or closed position. In the open position the slide 16, the lip 8, and the slide fastener member 10 assume the position shown by the dottedlines in Figures 1, 2 and 3. When in this position the secondary wall 5 has the bulge 18 therein (shown in Figures 1 and 2) and the pocket mouth 15 is comparatively wide (see Figures 2 and 3). Because of the comparatively wide mouth, articles may be deposited in the pocket WithOlltSllbJBCtiIlg the pocket mouth to undue stresses such as would develop if the articles were forced through the comparatively narrow pocket openings now in general use. In the open position the resilient member 19 is underthe least tension.
To positively close the pocket 15 the slide l6is actuated from the position shown by the dotted lines in Figure 1 to that shown by the full lines. The slide 16 rides along the convex lip 11 and slide fastener member 13 and cooperates with the slide fastener member 10, thus simultaneously positively closing the mouth 15 of the pocket 7 and raising and making taut the lip 8 and the partially movable secondary wall 5. In the closed position the lip 8 is convex in outline, as shown in Figure 1, the secondary wall is in the raised position, and the resilient member 19 is under maximum tension.
The modification disclosed in Figure 4 differs from that shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 only in the fact that cooperating snap fastenlng means 17 are substituted for the slide fastener closure means 14, and in that the resilient member 19 is omitted.
It is to be. distinctly understood that although our invention is here shown in association with a bag we do not desire tobe limited to that particular use, for it is ob vious that our invention can be applied not only to bag pockets but also to automobile pockets, clothes pockets and in fact to any article or device wherein pockets are necessary or desirable.
The above disclosure is by the way of illustration only and not by the way of limitation since many changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention. For instance:-The type of pocket mouth closure means may be changed: Or the size, shape, outline or material of either the bag, the pocket or any of its component elements may be changed: Or the specific contour of the substantially convex shaped stationary lip or the movable lip which is adapted for cooperation and connection therewith may be changed: Or the location and manner of attachment of the pocket may be varied: Or the position or mouth of the pocket may be varied. These as well as other changes are all contemplated by us and are within the scope of ourinvention. We desire, therefore, that the hereunto appended claims, which are intended to define our invention, should be limited only by the prior art.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and useful is 1. A pocket consisting of a relatively stifi fixed wall; a second wall attached at all of its edges but one to the said fixed wall and open along its last said edge to form one of the lips of a mouth for the said pocket, a portion of the said lip intermediate its limiting ends being higher than the said ends.

and fastening means carried by the first lip and cooperating with the said fastening means defining the said other lip for closing the mouth of the said pocket whenever 3 desired.
4:. A pocket consisting of a relatively stiif fixed wall; and a secondary wall attached along all of its edges but one to the said fixed wall, open along its last said edge to form one of the lips of a mouth for the said pocket, a portion of the .said secondary wall being vertically movable with respect to the said fixed wall; a convex track, having its terminal points at the mouth terminal ends,
defining the other lip for the said mouth; a closure element carried by the first said lip and mounted for sliding movement along the said track for positively closing the pocket whenever desired.
5. In combination with a bag a pocket consisting of one of the wall members of the said bag and a secondary wall attached along all of its edges but one to the said bagwall and open along its ast said edge to form one of the lips of the mouth for the said pocket, the said lip being substantially convex in contour in the closed position of the .said mouth and substantially in a straight line in the open position of the mouth; a
substantially 'convex track, having its terminal points at the mouth terminal ends, carried by the said bag wall and defining the other lip of the said mouth; a closure element carried by the first said lip and mounted for sliding movement along the said track for positively closing the said pocket when ever desired.
6. In combination with a bag a pocket consisting of one of, the wall members of the said bag and a secondary wall, having a plurality of folds, attached along three of its edges to the said bag wall and open along its fourth edge to form one of the lips of the mouth for the said pocket, the said lip being substantially convex in contour in the closed position of the said mouth and forming substantially a straight line in the open position of the mouth; a resilient member carried by the said lip; a substantially convex slide fastener closure element having its terminal points at the mouth terminal ends, carried by the said bag wall and defining the other lip of the said mouth; a cooperating slide fastener closure element carried by the first said lip for cooperating with the said closure element carried by the said bag wall positively closing the said pocket whenever desired; and actuating means for actuating the slide fastener closure elements.
In testimony whereof we hereby aifix our signatures.
