STEAM INTAKE SLEEVE FOR SULPHITE PULP DIGESTERS Filed Oct. 20, 1931 Ivy/(w for: E jfarferyd,
Patented July 26, 1932 EINAR MORTERUD,
or item; inonwnxl I STEAM INTAKE SLEEVE non siiLr intrn' r trrniessmns Application filed October 20, 1931, Serial No.
The present invention relates to sulphite pulp digesters ot the kind in which steam for the purpose of heating the liquor is introduced into the digester.
It has been found that the steam intake sleeve by means of which the steam is passed from the outside to the digester shell and digester lining, is liable to cause leakage in the brick lining of the digester, and particularly this is the case when acid proof steel is used for steam tube'and sleeve, as this material has a very high coeflicient of heat expansion.
In accordance with the present invention this drawback is avoided by connecting the steam intake sleeve with the digester shell by means of a surrounding auxiliary sleeve,
which is tightly connected with the exterior of the digester shell and which extends right through the interior brick lining of the digester so as to form a support for the brick lining.
The said exterior sleeve is connected with the steam intake sleeve only at the exterior 5 end of the latter, the two sleeves being otherwise separated by means of an annular space, which at its inner end is in free communication with the interior end of the digester and which extends outwards as far as to the shell of the digester.
The exterior shell which forms the support for the brick lining will accordingly not be exposed to the high temperature of the steam, but only to the temperature of the liquor in the interior of the digester, and the steam intake sleeve which is exposed to the high temperature of the steam is permitted to expand freely without transmitting stresses to the brick lining.
If necessary, means may be provided for establishing a circulation of liquor in the annular space between the steam intake sleeve I and the surrounding sleeve, so as to prevent overheating and/or evaporation of the liquor between said sleeves, and the forming of crusts.
Two forms of the invention are diagrammatically illustrated on the drawing.
Fig. 1 is an axial section through a simple steam intake sleeve, and Fig. 2 illustrates a sseleeejaiiem may novei i'b'i 193939;
steam intake sleeve for supplying steam to a circulation conduit in the interior of the digester.
1 is the, digester shell and 2 the brick lining. On the exterior surface of thedigester shell there is located an annular supporting 7 disk 3, against which is placed the exterior,
sleeve 4, which extends inwards through the brick lining, and the exterior flange 5 of which lies against annular disk3. i The steam intake sleeve 6 with its exte-, rior flange 7 and a short shoulder 8 is pressed tightly against the flange 5 of exterior sleeve 4. V q
The remaining part of steam intake sleeve 6 6 is separated from-exterior sleeve 4 by an annular space 9, which is in directcommunication with the interior of the digester and which is accordingly filled with digester li- T quor, which forms a heat insulatinglayer between sleeves 4 and 6. In order to provide circulation of the liquor in space 9, suitable means such as ribs or channels may be provided in order to secure a continuous movement of liquor in space 9 by thermosi- 76 phon action.
According to the form of the invention illustrated on Fig. 2 there is located between exterior sleeve 4 and steam intake sleeve 6 a further sleeve 10, to the inner end ofwhichf' is secured a tube 11 through which liquor is circulated in the interior of the digester. The annular space 12 between sleeves l0 and t is in direct communication with the interior of the digester, whereas the space 9 between intake sleeve 6 and intermediate sleeve 10 is in direct communication with the interior of the circulation pipe 11.
In this manner there is provided'a doubl layer ofheat insulating liquor between the steam intake sleeve 6 and the exterior sleeve 4 supporting the brick lining. i
I claim: a g Improvement in steam intake sleeves for passing steam through the wall of'a sulphite pulp digester or the like provided with interior brick lining, characterized by that the steam intake sleeve is surrounded by an auxiliary sleeve, passing from the exterior surface of the digester'shell through the bricklining thereof and serving as a support for the brick lining, the steam intake sleeve proper and the auxiliary sleeve being separated by means of an annular space, which is in direct communication with the interior of the digester and which extends outwards the two sleeVesa-rein direct heat transmit inlet tube.
