Description

L. F. aman.,- HAT-RACK@ N186 825. wenn@ su. so, 1877.
UNrTED 'STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI F. GEHR, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAT-RACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,825, dated January 30, 1877; application filed December 8, 1876.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LEVI F. GEHR, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Hat-Racks, of which the following is a specification, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof. j
This invention relates to an extensible rack having combined therewith a mirror and comb-and-brush box, as hereinafter specified.
Figure 1 is a front view of my improved hat-rack extended. Fig. 2 is a similar view ofthe same closed. Fig. 3 is a Vertical section on line ao y, showing the means employed in effecting-the extension and closing of the rack.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts ofthe invention in'all the views.
A is a center-board, which also serves as a frame for the mirror B, and back for the comb= and-brush box C. D D, Ste., are the rackpin frames, jointed together by the dowels a of the pins E, the dowels being secured in the rear frames and loose in those in front. The two frames which intersect at the top of the board A are jointed to each other and to the board at b by a pin or screw, as shown, and the joint thus made has no vertical movement; but the two frames that intersect at the bottom of the board A are jointed together at c by a pin which enters a slotted plate, d, set in the back of the board. The pin, as t-he rack is extended or closed, slides in the slot of the plate d, a head formed on the pin keeping it in the slot. Thus the vertical movement attendant upon the extension is provided for. Washers e, made of leather or similar material, are placed between the rack-pin frames, the washers allowing the rack to be extended and closed without a rattling or jerking of the joints, and also preventing the rubbing together of the varnished surfaces of the frames by keeping them apart, as well as allowing of the insertion of the varnish-brush between the frames in the course of the manufacture ofthe article.
The rack thus made is adapted to suit places of different widths, and is easily packed for transportation, or otherwise moved, and in having the comb-and-brush box and in irror' is rendered further convenient.
I' claim as my invention and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In combination with a laterally-extensible and folding hat-rack, a frame for a mirror and comb-and-brush box, the said frame being attached to the hat-rack by means of a stationary pivot-pin and a pin sliding in a slot in said frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto subscribed my name this 17th day of November,
LEVI F. GEBR. Witnesses:
WM. T. HOWARD, THOMAS MURDocH.
