To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. H. DOUBLER, of the city of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Picture-Album, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to th at class of albums employed mainly as a receptacle of photographs, but is adapted to receive pictures or other like articles as a convenient method of preserving` them and arranging` them for reference; and it consists in providing a case of book-like form, in two parts, hinged to open freely, and supporting in the case lleaflike receptacles on suitablehin ged connections to fold and unfold freely in the case. These and other improvements, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described, constitute the subjectmatter of this specification.

In the accompanying` drawings, Figure l is an isometrical representation of my improved album opened with the casings at right angles. Fig. 2 is an isometrical representation ot' the album closed. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the hinged edge portion ot' the album on a transverse line at the upper edge of the hinged connection, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section of one of the leaf-like portions at its hinged connection with the case.

The outer case of my improved album is in its main outline of book form, in two box-like parts, in which a representsr the board-like portions, which, in this instance, are titted with an outside border, b, made in any suitable plain or ornamental form, and its edge portions o rise from the boards and meet in the center, forming recessed box-sides of a depth sufficient to receive the leaf-like portions inside ofthe box.

The leaf-like receptacles are of suitable outline form and size to freely enter and be received in the box, and are composed of three thicknesses,the center ply or portions of which, as at d, are placed at the outer vertical edges, the vertical central divisions, and at the bottom and the sides are suitably formed in open panels e, the openings of which are of a less width than the openings between the vertical center plies. These parts, consisting of the center and side plies, are rmly glued, cemented, or otherwise Xed together, producing leaf-like plates having open panels, and provided with edge grooves or channels f, open at the upper end, through which to insert the pictures, to be passed in the edge grooves into position to expose the pictures in theopen panels. These leaves, including the casing, may be made from wood, finished or covered with leather fabrics, paper, or any suitable material, plain or ornamental; or each individual piece may in itself` be made from different kinds of materials in any variety of finish or style applicable to such work, and the several parts may vary inthe materials of which they are formed and in their finish. rlhe two parts of the casing and the several leaves are all hinged to swing freely on the saine lengthwise center h, parallel to the lengthwise central joint in the back of the case.

In this method of hin ging the several parts the leaves of the hinge with which the case is connected are of substantially the same form, placed with their like faces opposite each other. This is also true of the leaf-hinges of each pair of leaves taken in pairs from the opposite halves in their successive order, one from each side, commencing with the outside leaves and taken toward the centers, or commencing at the center and taken outward toward the casing, but in each such respective pairs of the hinge-leaves the angle portion of the leaves varies to a sufficient extent to permit the several leaves to fold freely into the case and onto each other, all of which is clearly represented in the drawings, but especially in section in Fig. 3, in which the pairs are designated by like letters of reference, in which i represents the leaves of the hinge which connects the casings, k represents the hinge-leaves on which the outside pair of album-leaves are hinged, and l the hinge-leaves on which the inner pair of albunrleaves are hinged, from which it will be readily seen that, in ord er to have the several pairs ot' leaves fold snugly into the case and on each other properly, it is necessary that each pair of hinged leaves are formed with the proper angles to adapt them to the particular position for which they are designed.

At m is represented a bracket, designed to be fixed in a vertical position in any convenient place by means of suitable screws, which may be passed through the holes n in its end portions. This bracket is fitted with hookingarms 0,'whieh project from its front side at proper points. These hook-arms are designed to engage suitable eyes fixed in position to the case, in or at its back-center joint, in the same lengthwise line of the hinges of the case.

The object of this part of my invention is to suitably suspend my improved album in a convenient manner for reference, and from which position it may be readily removed and as readily replaced when required.

By this method of constructillg albums I am enabled to produce albums in great varieties and styles from a great variety of materials not heretofore employed in the manufacture of such goods, and I am also enabled to produce an album of greater durability, and to better preserve its contents, and to produce a new article of manufacture.

I claim as my in vention- 1. In an album, the combination, with a twopart case, said parts being hinged together and adapted to have their inclosin g sides meet in edge -bearing, of a series of album-leaves hinged in line with the hinge-joint of the case, substantially as set forth.

2. In an album, the combination, with a twopart case hin ged together, of a series of albumleaves adapted to be inclosed within the case and hinged on a common center, the outer album -leaves on both sides being provided with angular hinges respectively inclining in opposite directions from the centralA portion of the album, substantially as set forth.

3. In an album, the combination, with a twopart ease, said parts being hinged together and adapted to have their inclosing sides meet in edge-bearing, of a series of album -leaves hinged on a colnmon center in line with the hin ge-joint ofthe case, the outer album-leaves being provided with angular hinges, substantially as set forth.

4. In an album, the combination, with a twopart case, the parts ot' which are hinged together, and a series of album-leaves adapted to be inclosed within the case, of a bracket extending along the back of the case and secured thereto by arms which project from lthe bracket, substantially as set forth.

5. In an album, the combination, with a twopart case, said parts being hinged together' and adapted to have their inclosin g sides meet in edge-bearing, and a series of album-leaves hinged on a common center in lille with the hin ge-joint of the case, ot' a bracket provided with arms which engage with the back ofthe case in line with its hinge-joint, substantially as set forth.
