Description

July 5, 1932. H c LOHMAN 1,866,313
BOTTLE STOPPER Filed Sept. 27, 1929 vsgggm: 22
INVE OR ATTORNEY Patented July 5, 1932 UNITED STATES HARRY c. LOHMAN, or BROOKLYN, NEW xoamnssrenon or; ONE-HALF 'ro ALBERT SAMUELS, or MORBIS'IOWN, NEW JERSEY BOTTLE STOPPER r This invention relates to a bottle stopper.
The object of the invention is the production of a bottle stopper, which can be easily inserted into the neck of a bottle or other container, and removed therefrom without breakage to either the stopper or to the bottle, and therefore useful for repeated use. The second object of the invention is the production of a bottle stopper having'a waterproofed cap to prevent dust and other foreign matter entering the bottle or other container, to which the stopper is connected. The third object of the invention is the production of a stopper having a cap at its upper end, the said cap constituting a flange having an outside diameter preferably equal to the outside diameter of the neck of the bottle for which it is used, to enable the easy packing of bottles with the improved stopper. The fourth object of the invention is the production of a bottle stopper which will form a tight joint with the neck of a bottle or other container, to make a fluid tight joint. The fifth object of the invention is the production of a bottle stopper having a cap on which various legends, advertisements and the like can be printed or otherwise indicated.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 represents an elevation of the bottle stopper with a sectional elevation of the upper portion and the neck of a bottle, exemplifying the invention; Fig. 2 shows a top plan view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 indicates a section of Fig. 2 on the line 3, 3; Fig. 4 represents a section of Fig. 1 on the line 4, 4 and Fig. 5 represents an elevation of a pair of the elements of the bottle stopper'during its course of manufacture. The bottle stopper in this exemplification comprises the core of cork having the cylindrical portion 20, which is integral with the lower slightly tapered portion 21. The portion 21 may also be cylindrical, and in place of cork the core may be made of other flexible material. Around the cylindrical portion 20 is wound the paper tape 22, gummed on one face and commercially known as Kraft gummed tape. One end of the tape is indicated at 23. In place of the paper tape 22 a tgxtile or tape of other material may be use The portion of the tape 22 adjacent to the end 23 is fastened to the cylindrical portion 20 of the core by means of the adhesive onone of the faces of said tape, as best shown in Fig. 5. The tape 22 is then wound around the said portion 20 as best shown in Fig. 4. The
windings of the tape 22 forms a flange shaped cap 25 at the upper end of the stopper. lower face of the cap 25 is indicated at 26. A disc 27 preferably of paper and having its lower face gummed and constituting a supplemental cap is then fastened to the upper and outer face of the cap 25 and portion 20.
The outer cylindrical face of the cap 25 and the top face of the supplemental cap 27 may then be colored with various colors. Various The legends 28, advertisements and the like are N then printed or otherwise indicated on the outer cylindrical surface ofthe cap 25 and on thetop face of the supplemental cap 27,
.as indicated at 29.
' The upper portion of the stopper is then waterproofed by immersing it in a waterproofingv agent, like blood albumen. The waterproofing extends for a small distance below the cap 25 as indicated at 30, to insure eflicient waterproofing at the lower portion 31 of the joint between the cap 25 and the core of the stopper.
- to be taken as illustrative and not limitative thereof.
Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is: A bottle stopper comprising a core having an upper cylindrical portion and a lower tapered portion, a cap composed of a Wound strip of material extending from and fastened to said cylindrical portion, the outer surface of said cap colored and having a legend marked thereon, a disc constituting a supplemental cap fastened to the upper face of said core and cap, said disc colored and having a legend marked thereon and a Waterproofing agent covering said cap, supplemental cap and a portion of said core.
Signed at borough of Manhattan, city of New Yorkyin the county of New York and State of New York this 26th day of Septemher, A. D. 1929.
