DRINKING s'rRAw;
Application filed July 26, 1920. Serial No. 399,216.
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, HUGO PICK, a citizen The invention relates to drinking straws.
The object of the invention is to provide a drinking straw in which the mouth portion is clearly distinguishable or marked, so that persons serving or handling the straws before they reach the user will re train from touching the mouth portions.
'VVith this object in view, the invention consists in the improved drinking straw hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claim at the conclusion hereof. In the drawing: Figure 1 is a web from which strips for forming the straws are cut. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the finished straw. The improved straw is formed of suitable material, such as paper, and is characterized from the straws now in general use by having a portion adjacent one end distinctly marked, as at 8, to differentiate that portion which is to be placed in the mouth of the user from the remainder 4: of the straw. As a result, persons handling the straws in serving them can readily distinguish the mouth portion from the remainder of each straw and refrain from handling the mouth portions so that they will be kept in a sanitary 5 condition.
In making these straws, a webof paper 5 is printed with distinguishing lines or stripes which are colored, as at 6. This web is divided on line 7 to form two strips each with the marking at one margin to form the mouth-portions 8. The ends of these strips are successively severed crosswise, as at 9, to form pieces each adapted to form a straw. Each piece is then folded into tubular form with lapped margins which are then suitably secured together by an adhesive. Then the entire straws are coated with parafline or the like to render them waterproof. The coating covers the ink in the printing 01 the marking 3 on the straws, so that there will be no danger of infection therefrom.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope oi the ap pended claim, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A drinking straw formed of suitably V coated paper, having one end portion thereof distinctively marked to difierentiate it from i the remainder of the straw so that persons handling it will be warned from touching the mouth-portion thereof, said straw being of substantially uniform contour throughout its length.
HUGO PICK.
