Description
March 24, 1936. SCHIEK PACKAGE 0F SURGICAL ADHESIVE BANDS Filed Dec. 10, 1934 Patented Mar. 24, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3Claims.
This invention relates to a package of surgical adhesive bands.
The surgical adhesive bands that are preferably made up into the package of this invention are described and claimed in my 'copending application entitled Surgical adhesive bands, Serial No. 756,814, filed December 10, 1934. The present invention is not, however, limited to the use of any particular type of surgical adhesive buds, although the bands of my invention are peculiarly suited for this type of packaging.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple, inexpensive package of surgical adhesive bands that can be carried in the pocket and that,
like packages of paper matches, can be used for advertising purposes.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying draw- This invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawing and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawing:
Figure l is a plan view of a package embodying the principles of my invention.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the same.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the package with the cover opened up.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line IVIV of Fig. 1.
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of a single surgical band after removal from a package.
As shown on the drawing:
The reference numeral It indicates a foldedcover, which may be made of paper, cardboard or the like, and which comprises a back portion Ii, a relatively short folded over end I2 and a relatively long cover flap IS, the end ll of which is adapted to be tucked in behind the short end portion l2 to close the package. A panel of surgical adhesive bands, indicated generally at H is positioned within the cover It and secured therein by means of a staple l6 passing through the cover portions I2 and I I and through an end of the panel.
Each panel comprises a plurality of surgical bands ll formed from highly transparent sheet or film material, such as regenerated cellulose,
cellulose acetate or the like, and provided on one surface with an adhesive coating it, which is colorless, thermoplastic, pressure sensitive and waterproof. A suitable type of adhesive is formed by dissolving fresh, clean unvulcanized rubber,
such as pale crepe rubber, in a suitable solvent.
such as benzene, ethylene dichloride or the like. Preferably, a small proportion of a rubber chloride is incorporated into the adhesive composition. Gums, resins and waxes may also be used in the preparation of the adhesive. 5 A strip of open mesh fabric It serves as a temporary backing for the surgical adhesive bands". The strip of fabric l9, which may be crinoline orsimilar fabric, is longer than the surgical adhesive bands II and an end 20 there- 10 01' extends into the fold of the short cover portion l2 and is held in place therein by the staple It. In order to prevent the adhesive from penetrating through the fabric backing l9 and sticking to the adjacent cover wall or to the fingers, 5 an underlying layer 2| of an impermeable, grease- 1 proof paper, such as glassine, is employed. This layer 2| is lightly stuck to the hack of the fabric backing It by the adhesive that penetrates through the open mesh of the fabric. 20
- In order to facilitate the removal of the individual surgical adhesive bands ii, an end thereof is provided with an uncoated, transverse strip of material, such as colored glassine paper, indicated at 22. Said strip 22 is secured to the end 25 of the surgical band ll by means of the adhesive coating it. Since the portions 22 are uncoated, there is no tendency for them to stick to the fabric backing l9, but rather instead the uncoated portion causes a slight separation of the end of 30 the surgical adhesive bands, as indicated at 23, thus permitting ready removal of the individual bands.
In forming the panels I5, the various layers are first superimposed and then out along lon i- 35 staple I6.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I, 50 therefore, do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A package of surgical adhesive bands, com- 55 prising a folded cover having interengageable ends, a panel of surgical adhesive bands within said cover, each panel comprising a plurality of adhesive coated bands, a temporary fabric backing therefor, and an underlying layer of dense thin paper, the fabric backing andunderlying paper extending beyond the ends of said adhesive bands and means securing one end of said panel to said cover through an extended end of sai fabric backing and underlying paper.
2. A package of surgical adhesive bands, comprising a folded cover having interengageable ends, a panel of surgical adhesive bands within said cover, each panel comprising a plurality of adhesive coated bands, a temporary fabric backing therefor, and an underlying layer of dense thin paper, the fabric backing and underlying paper extending beyond the ends of said adhesive bands and means securing one end of said panel to said cover through an extended end of said fabric backing-and underlying paper, said adhesive coated bands having uncoated end portions free from said fabric backing to be readily grasped in removing bands from said backing.
3. A package of surgical adhesive bands, comprising a folded cover having interengageable ends, a panel of surgical adhesive bands within said cover, each panel comprising a plurality of adhesive coated transparent bands, a temporary fabric backing therefor, and. an underlying layer of glassine paper, the fabric backing and underlying paper extending beyond the ends of said adhesive bands and means securing one end of said panel to said cover through an extended end of said fabric backing and underlying paper.
