Description

UNITED STATES PATENT ()rnron.
P. ELMENDORF SLOAN, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN NEWSPAP ER-FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,280, dated January 16, 1877; application. filed August 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, P. ELMENDORF SLOAN, of Syracuse, New York, have invented an Improvement in Paper-Files for Newspapers.
1 &c., of which the following is a specification:
- 1 is a profile view, with -the file extended out in a straight line, the paper being indicated by dotted lines a win its place on the file. Fig. 2 represents thefile folded up; Fig. 3, details of the metallic joint and the clamp; Fig. 4, details of the rod G, Fig. 1.
The file is composed of three or more joints, three being shown in the drawing, the joint pieces a a a, of convenient shape, and any length or materiahto be with their upper edges in the same plane, and with freedom to double readily upon each other, as in my former patent. or other suitable plates 1) b aflixed to their outer ends, standing off to leave a space between them. These plates extend over the joints at the inner ends, as clearly seen in the drawing, where they are slotted, and have a but ton or headed rivet, c, with a T-shaped shank, as seen detached at c, Fig. 3, which slides and turns freely in the slot. This has a short piece, b, jointed to the cross-piece of the shank of thebutton, so that it can be thrown upward and over upon the end piece, to which it is jointed by the button 0, and forms a double-acting joint.
To each of the short pieces b a clamp-piece, d, is affixed, that fits down onto the joint- The parts a a have metallic.
piece a, and is held in place by the shoulder on the ring-screw T, which passes through it and screws into the joint-piece a, or it may be attached by a spring acting to clasp it tightly to the sides of thejoint-piece a, which it embraces. This clamp bears directly upon the paper between the bars or joint-pieces a a, and serves to shield or guard the: paper from injury as it presses laterally on the paper against the sides of the bar, andyields or opens outward,as required, for which a spring,
as aforesaid, may be introduced, or the clamp itself may be made a spring.
My improved rod G, for holding the joints in a straight line, consists of two end pieces that screw into a center-piece, which is larger than the end pieces, so as not to slip through the rings r 1*, into which the end pieces are put before putting the parts of the rod together. Instead of the rod G, bolts may be affixed to the joint-pieces a and a/ or b and b, as preferred, at the joints, to bolt them stiffly in line.
Having thus fully described my improvements in the jointed paper-file, I'claim- 1.. The double-actingjoint, composed of the button 0 and pieces b b, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes specified.
- 2. The sectional rod G, in combination with the jointed file, as and for the purposes described. 3; The clamp and guard-piece d, in combination with the bar a substantially as and for the purposes set forth. P. ELMENDORF SLOAN.
