Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo WILLIAM T. JORDAN, OF OHAGRIN FALLS, AND PIERRE MEQUILLET, OF CLEVELAND, ASSIGNORS TO ADAMS @t OO., OF GHAGRIN FALLS, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BAGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,009, dated January 9, 187? application fled November 15, 1876.
To all whom 1t may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM T. JORDAN, of Chagrin Falls, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, and PIERRE MEQUILLET,
of Cleveland, in said county and State, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Bags, of which the following is a specification:
It is well known to those skilled in the art that a paper bag, to be commercially successful in a high degree, should be ornamental in appearance, as Well as possessing useful qualities, which desideratum is generally attained by serrating or scalloping the top or edges of the bag.
rIhe objection to bags thus made is the great difficulty experienced in opening them under peculiar circumstances, as when the user can employ only one hand, the other being engaged in holding the measure or tray containing the article to be deposited in the bag; aud to remedy this defect, while preserving the ornamental appearance of the bag, many attempts have been made, among which may be mentioned that of nicking a space in one edge of the bag during the process of manufacture, leaving one edge of the bag projecting slightly above its next contiguous edge, making the scallops of comparatively large area alternating with each other, and in other ways; but, so far as we are aware, they are practically and commercially unsuccessful and objectionable.
The object of our invention is to combine in a bag, in a cheap, effective, and simple mauner, the advantages and merchantable qualities of the serrated or scalloped edged bag, While at the same time rendering it capable of being easily opened under any circumstances, which ends we attain by forming the top or edge of the bag partly serrated or scalloped and partly plain or smooth.
The accompanying drawing represents a View, in perspective, of our improved bag.
We provide the top or edges of a bag, A, during the process of manufacture, or afterward, if preferred, with serrations or scallops a, and with intervening plain or smooth spaces a', one or more, as may be necessary or desirable, the plain spaces on one edge being directly opposite corresponding spaces on the other.
We prefer to manufacture our improved bags Awith the top entirely serrated or scalloped, except two plain spaces, the width of which may be varied, said spaces being l0- cated at suitable distances apart, as shown, to adapt the bag readily to be opened from either side but we contemplate, in practice, under certain circumstances, to provide the bag With but one plain surface, and locate it at or near the center for convenience, but the number of plain spaces and their location can be varied within certain limits Without departing from the spirit of our invention.
By our improvements, it will be obvious that We attain the desideratum of a cheap, neat, and superior bag, and one that can be easily opened under any circumstances, the importance and value of which will be appreciated without further explanation.
We claim as of our own invention- As a new article of manufacture, a paper bag, the top of which is partly plain or smooth and partly serrated or scalloped, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names.
W. T. JORDAN. PIERRE MEQUILLET. Witnesses:
