To all whom 225 may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. WIPLQOX, a'citizen of. the United States, reslding at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw andv State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Spouts; and l'do hereby declare the following to he a 'full, clear, and exact description of'the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art, to'which it appertainsto make and usethe'same. j
.This invention, is a pouring spout for use on containers such as salt cartons'and the I like, and the improvement relates more particularly to certain novel features of con struotion' in'spouts of the 'class adapted to project from the container when in use and ,for the spout ing the spout in its open position.
A spout to which my improvement is appliedis shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1;is a perspective View of the. end wall of a carton with'the spout in position for pouring.
Fig. 2. 1s an enlarged transverse section.
- freely, but the peripheries of its sides, as at 8, will yieldingly bind against the edge. of
on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a front diagrammatic view of the spout opening.
As usually constructed, the spout consists of a bottom member 1 and quadrant-shaped sides 2. The bottom member is hinged to the Wall of the carton at the lower edge 3.
of the spout opening in any suitable .man-' ner, and the sides 2,are provided inside the carton with suitable projections or stops 4 adapted to engage the wall of-the carton to prevent'the spout froinbeing accidentally drawn out of the carton;
My present invention relates to an improved means for y'ieldingly retaining the spout in its open or outwardly projected 9 1 g Toyieldingly hold the spout 1n 1ts opened posltion, I so shape tlIQ-SldeSQ, 2, or one of position and .for maintaining the correct shape and paralleliarrangement of the sides of the spout opening 6' when the spout is in its opened position.
Slits 7 may be formed in the wall of the carton to receive and guide the sides 2 if desired, the depth of the slits being such that the part of the sides 2 nearest the free end of the spout will not bear against the ends of the slits when the spout isclosed or' only slightly opened, but when the spout is opened to the position for pouring, the wider or outwardly projecting parts 8 of the sides will engage the carton wall at the extremities of the slits with sufl'icient grip to yieldingly hold the spout in its open position. The sides 2 are preferably parallel with each other and with the edges of the spout opening. The radial-1y extended parts '8 of the sides 2 may be of any shape adapted to engage the ends of the slits; or to engage the upper edges of the opening in the carton if the slits are not used, as'the case maybe, but I preferably make the sides 2, 2 of quadrant shape and slightly eccentric, the
' radius at 8 being greater than at other parts of the quadrant, so that'the spout will open the carton wall when thespout is in its 1 opened position.
By the means above described, I have produced a spout which will remain openedand is not likely to become loose or to close accidentally, and will retain its shape and neat appearance.
As an article of manufacture the spout can be produced small expense. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure Letters Patent is: 1. In a container having a wall formed with a spout opening, a spout hinged in said opening, a side on said spout, one edge of said side being slightly eccentric to the hinge to @form a wedge-member adapted to .frictionally 'engage'the edge of said con inlarge quantities at very tainer Wall zit-the upper edge of said opening and thereby hold the spout in its open position.
2. A container having a wall formed with a spout-opening and slits extending therefrom, a spout'hinged in sa'id opening, aside on said spout, one edge of said side being slightly eccentric to the hinge to form a wedge-member adapted to frictionally engege the edge of said container -wall at the 10 upper end of said slitand thereby hold the spout in its open position. I
In testimony Whereof, I aflix my signature .in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE B. WILLCOX. Witnesses: JOSEPH V. CARPENTER, NELLIE M. ANGUS.
