FRANK GOLDBERG, or AUGUSTA, GEORGIA snIELn n'r'rncnmnnrron GARMENTHANGERS Applicationfi led May 10, l929."Seria1 N0."362,05 3.
This invention relates to'improvement's in attachments for garment hangers, having for an; object to provide a deviceespe'cially advantageous and practical for attachment to g; a garment hanger of usual construction or design, without modificationthereof, whereby V to protect a garment arranged thereon from soiling durin the handling of the same and yet, not interfere with an effectual display of such as dresses and the like, made of light and perishable materials, it frequently oc: ours that portions of the same are soiled by is finger markings during'the arranging or rearranging of the same uponracks employed to hang such garments'upon, henee, in some instances, detracting from the original sale value thereofor if not this, then necessitatingthe, cleaning of the soiled portionsof the garment. By the use of my novel attachment upon agarment hanger,,a shield is afforded that part of the garment usually engagedby the fingers of a sales clerk or other'person 2 during the removal, replacement or adjust ment of the garment from,to and upon a supporting rack, thus, preventing the fingers from having direct contact with an exposed portion of the garment and therefore, avoid- 30 ing soilinv of the same. V
Other. dbjects of the invention will be in part obviousand-in' partpointed out hereinafter: a V In order that the invention andits mode of operation may bev readilv understood by persons skilled, in the art,I have in the accompanying illustrative drawings and. in the I "detailed following description basedthereon,
set out several possible embodiments of the same.
In these drawings:
Figure l is a perspective View of a garment hangerequipped with the improved attach-' ment and showing the arrangementofthe free portion ofthe shield with respect to an expo'sed part of a garment suspended from thehanger; l V
Figure 2 is anenla r'ged transverse section through a garn ient hanger'equipped with the invention; V I 1 igure 3 is a detail in plan of the improved attachment; 7 7
I Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail in 1 Ian of the reverse and garment hanger attac ing portion of the invention;
Figure 5 is a fragmentarydetail in plan of for the invention; r t
Figure 6 is ia perspective of a slightly modifiedform of the invention, and
I Figure 7 is asimilar view of the opposite side of the modified form of the invention. -Having more particular reference -to the drawings, in connection with which like characters of reference will designate corresponding parts throughout,- and referring in I particular, to that form of the invention ilg lustrated in'the Figures '1 to 4 inclusive, the
inventionrmay be stated to be especially adapted for use in connection with garment hangers of the now prevalent construction a slightly difi'erent'form of attaching means I or design, though 'forpurposes of illustra tion" in this particular adaptation of the invention, I have shown the'fsam'ejas applied to the usual curved bar type of hanger, such hanger being indicated in its entirety bythe numeral 1 and having the interm e'diate portion thereofvprovided with the usual hanger hook 2 for anobvious purpose.
The inventlon per se, consists of a body-or f piece ofmaterial of preferably flexibleochan' acteristics', designated by the num'eral3, one end portionof said body being reduced "as indicated by'the numeral t while the 'oppo-i site end thereof, is similarly reduced, as indicated by the numeral 5 a pocket'6 being The pocket, 6, subsequently'to introduction.
, 'ofthe weighted element 7 thereinto, is pref:
erably closed by a row of stitching 8, where by to prevent displacement of said element 7. Also, for purposes of imparting a nicety of.
finished appearance to theibody-B, the edges thereof maybe, if desired, provided with a:
facing or.edgingsuchfasis indicated herein by the numeral9; :"1
. To facilitate engagement of one endpor 'tion of 'tl1e'ibody3 with the hanger 1 I en-I gage; in an intermediate portionof the re duce d part 4 thereof,an eyelet designated by the numeral 10, this eyelet being adapted to receive the hanger hook 2 therethrough, after the fashion as isshown 1n the Figures 1 and 2, while to effect proper arrangement or'disposition of the remaining and free portion and being indicated by j the numeral 12.
Herein, it is to be noted that the elements 11 of the separable fastening devices are setween the separable fastener elements 11 and cured to one side or face of the reduced portion lof the body 3,'while the remaining elements 12 are secured tothe opposite side or face ofrsaid body 3 and are in longltudmal alinement with respect thereto. Thus, with engagement of the eyelet 10 over the hanger hook 2, the freeor remaining portion of the body 3 is arranged about the hanger bar in a manner to permitofinterengagement be- 2 in themanner as i'srshown in the Figures 1 and 2; By this mode of arrangement of the free portion of the body 3, it will be understood that the same will dependfrom the hanger bar- 1 andwill be arranged in a perpendicular plane approximately correspondiiig'tOfth-e adg'acen't side orrface of the hanger bar 1; that because of the Weighted element 7 in the pocket fi-of thedependingjportion of the'body 3, saidfree portion of the body will be prevented from curling upwardly or being displaced with respect to an adjacent portion, of the garment G during continued use of the inventionl V In the Figure;5, I have shown a slightly 'Inodified form of the attachment, where n the reduced portion 1 of-the body'Sis formed at its extreme end with a longitudinallydisposed slit 13. separable fastener elements 1 1 are arranged upon the adjacent portion of the reducedv part 4 at the end of the slit 18 and with engagement of the hanger hook in said slit, these separable fastener elements are adapted to be interengaged and thus, will serve to'efiect a detachable connection of the device to the garment hanger.
vTh -slmode of attaching tlierdevice to the garment hanger, obviously, willdispense with the needof the eyelet 10 shown in connection with-that embodiment of the inven- ,tion illustrated in the Figures 1 to 4 inclusive,
In using thecharacter or form of invention illustrated inthe immediately'preceding fig- 'ures, it willbetunderstood thatwlien the gar- L mentG is arranged upon theflhanger bar, the free and normally depending portion of the 3 iis'permitted to-overhangor to overlie the outer sidetof a portion ofusaid garment. in 7 the fashion as'is shown in'the Figure 1 and in so doing, will provide an effectual shield for said garment, enabling the sales clerk or other person handling the garment to remove, replace or adjust the same upon a receiving rack without having his fingers come in contact with the garment, in that the, fingers of the persons hand engage directly with the depending and overhanging portion ofthe body 3 arranged over a part of the exposed portion of the garment, while others of the fingers of said users hand may engage with an inner side portion or unexposed portion of the garment. that because of the weighted free end of the body 3, the shield portion of'thesam'e will becaused to normally remain in its shielding or-overlying position with respect to 'acgarment-arranged upon a hanger provided with the invention and consequently ,upon; this, such invention will at all times remain in proper and operative-position. Should it become desirable to remove body 3 fromthe hanger, thisniay be readily ers and thus, prevent soiling of garments-are ranged thereupon due to the -contact iof-soiledshields with the same. In the Figures 6 and7, I'have :shown :an-
other modified form of the invention, where V V Herein, it willbe noted 1 in the Horrible body portion consists of apiece V of materal indicated by the numeral 15,-an 7 intermediate marginal portion of said body 15 being formed with'a tongue-'likeextension or tabldhavingan eyelet 17 engaged therein and adapted to receive the hanger hook 2 therethrough, while interen-gageable separable fastener. elements :18 are secured to 1.130?- tions of the tongue 16-and when interengaged.
will serve to effect a positive "connection of said body to the bar of the garment hanger 1'. VVing-like extensions 7 19 are aformedinipon the opposite side portions of the body 15-and these extensions permit the body 'tofibe arranged in cape-like fashion about a garment Gt arranged upon the garment hanger; "the free extremities of the wing-like-ezitensions 19 being provided with separable fastener elements 20, adapted to be interengage'd; whereby to effect connection between said extensions and to complete the cape li'ke shield e'flec't thereof: about the entire uj-pper or shoulder portion of thegarment-G' V 1 As willbe understood, thetype orspecie of.
the embodimentof the invention-as illustrated" t in the Figures 6 and 7 may be, ifdesire'd, read: ily removed" from the hanger 1 merely; by
disengaging the separable fastener elements 18 and then removing the eyelet 7 froin the hanger hook 2', whereupon a fresh or clean shield maybe substituted.
Manifest-1y, the constructlon shown is capable of considerable modification, and such modification as is wlthin the scope of my vention.
